KRAK 11 NEWS
Good morning. This is KRAK 11 News at nine o'clock, and we have a full hour for you.
The World Desk this morning - a man is dead and two women remain hospitalized after a police pursuit ends in a crash. We will have the details from authorities.
Criminal Intent - a six-hundred-pound bronze statue honoring a Tuskegee Airman, stolen back in October of twenty twenty-four, has been recovered in Southwest Detroit.
That is a Florida Man Tribute.
It absolutely is. Animals - the heron is still on top, eighteen hours now, and still gaining views. And A Quick Look at Sports - nine new managers in the Premier League, nine opening weekend results, and we will tell you who impressed.
Still ahead this morning on The World Desk - one of those two women is in critical condition, and the sheriff's office has not yet said why the pursuit began. We will have that when we come back.
THE WORLD DESK
Good morning. This is KRAK 11 News at nine o'clock in the morning.
And we have four continents on the board this morning, which I think might be a record for us.
North America, Europe, Asia, and I am going to guess Australia.
Hollywood.
That is also North America.
It is. Shall we start with the fire?
We begin this morning with that wildfire outside Reno, where officials now say winds could keep fanning the flames for at least two more days.
The fire is about a quarter contained this morning, and evacuation orders remain in effect for neighborhoods on the western edge of the city.
Reno sits at the base of the Rocky Mountains, which means those winds come straight down the slopes.
The Sierra Nevada range, yes. On the eastern side, in a valley.
That is what I said.
Close enough. Firefighters are using the current conditions to build containment lines before the winds pick up again later today.
And no injuries reported this morning, which is the good news in all of this.
To the eastern hemisphere now, where China is pushing back hard against new American sanctions targeting Iranian oil exports.
Beijing is calling the sanctions illegal, and officials there say they will take steps to protect their interests. China imports close to ninety percent of Iran's crude oil exports.
That is about a million barrels a day, which is a substantial amount of fuel.
It is. Washington has threatened to isolate any nation that continues doing business with Tehran, which puts Beijing in a difficult position given how much oil is moving between the two countries.
So China is saying they will not comply.
They are saying they will safeguard their interests, which is the language diplomats use when they mean exactly that.
Over to the United Kingdom now, where police have made five more arrests in connection with that fatal crash on the A66 motorway.
The new arrests include a sixteen-year-old boy and two men held on suspicion of being part of an organized crime group.
This is the same crash that left two women injured, one of whom remains in hospital in critical condition this morning.
And authorities there are not saying yet what they believe connects the arrests to organized crime.
They are not. The investigation is ongoing and more information is expected later this week.
We will stay on that. Deb?
And now to the world of entertainment, where Kate Hudson says she is making a sequel to How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days, twenty-three years after the original.
Hudson and Matthew McConaughey starred in the two thousand three romantic comedy, and she says they could be reunited for the follow-up.
That film made over a hundred million dollars worldwide, which is why studios love sequels to movies people actually watched.
It was one hundred and five million, and it has been in steady rotation on cable ever since.
I have seen it.
Have you.
It was on at the dentist.
You watched the whole thing.
It was a long appointment.
Still ahead this morning, CRIMINAL INTENT, where we are following multiple investigations right here in Wexler County.
Including a case where deputies say they found something unusual during a routine traffic stop. That is coming up in just a few minutes.
You are watching KRAK 11 News.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good morning. This is the Blotter.
Two hundred and fourteen Florida Man Tributes in forty-four weeks.
We are committed to the work.
You are committed to the work.
We begin with what may be the longest outstanding warrant in American library history. Back in April of 2024, a library in Colorado received a book that was checked out in nineteen nineteen.
A hundred and five years overdue.
The librarian told reporters, and I am quoting here, things happen.
That is forgiveness.
Also back in April of last year, a North Carolina aquarium provided an update on Charlotte the stingray, who was pregnant despite having no male companion in the tank. Staff said Charlotte continued to be healthy.
The aquarium said parthenogenesis, asexual reproduction in which offspring develop without fertilization, was extremely rare but documented in rays.
They said it happens when an egg fuses with a polar body instead of sperm.
Science.
Back in October of 2024, a six-hundred-pound bronze statue of a Tuskegee Airman was stolen from Rouge Park in Detroit. Police recovered the statue in southwest Detroit days later.
The statue honored Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Jefferson from Detroit, one of the first Black military pilots, forbidden from holding the title before nineteen forty-one.
Police said the suspects used cutting tools to remove the statue from its base. The investigation remained open.
Police said.
And also back in April of 2024, a New York City man proposed to his girlfriend aboard a Delta flight that was chartered specifically to intercept the path of totality during a solar eclipse.
The flight crew said they dimmed the cabin lights during totality. He proposed at thirty-seven thousand feet with the moon blocking the sun behind them.
She said yes.
Well done.
Still ahead this morning on KRAK 11 News, the animal countdown. Fisherman Found This Heron Fighting For Its Life has now led for eighteen consecutive hours.
Nine million three hundred and ninety-eight thousand eight hundred and seventy-seven new views in the last four days. Animals is coming up.
ANIMALS
Good morning. This is the Good News Desk.
We count down the three animal videos that gained the most views in the last four days. Not total views, growth. What people found this week.
The same video has been at number one for eighteen hours now.
People keep finding it.
Number three. Tiny Boss Big Dog posted this one on the twentieth of August. It is called 120 Pounds of Dog, Hiding From Ice, Behind a Two-Year-Old.
Four million four hundred and three thousand six hundred and forty-eight new views in four days.
Number two. Windypaws posted this on the twentieth. When Kindness Goes Both Ways.
Eight million seventy-six thousand seven hundred and ninety-one new views in the last four days. Unchanged at number two since the last count.
And number one. Fisherman Found This Heron Fighting For Its Life. Posted by Sassy on the twenty-first of August.
Nine million six hundred and forty-six thousand and four new views in four days. It has now led the KRAK 11 animal countdown for eighteen consecutive hours.
Eighteen.
All three are on the KRAK 11 News Reel and the link is in the description.
Still ahead this morning, a look at sports. Including an endangered sea turtle that made a five thousand mile journey from Wales back to Texas.
Five thousand miles across open water. That is A Quick Look at Sports, in a few minutes on KRAK 11 News.
A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS
A quick look at sports, and we begin with nine new managers in the Premier League who all learned what opening weekend feels like.
Some impressed. Some have work to do.
All of them now know the job.
In chess, Magnus Carlsen has now won fifteen consecutive Esports World Cup titles and remains unbeaten in the tournament since it began.
Fifteen titles. That is not a streak, that is a statement.
And in college football, Ohio State is ranked number four in the preseason top twenty-five. They open the season looking to beat Michigan and make the playoff.
That is sports. Still ahead this morning, the next KRAK 11 News at the top of the hour. We will see you then.
