THE WORLD DESK
Good morning. This is the World Desk.
We have breaking news from France, a tornado in Singapore, and China is responding to United States sanctions policy.
Gordo, do we have the France map ready?
Standing by.
Thank you, Gordo.
We begin this morning with breaking news from southwestern France, where a tornado has destroyed dozens of homes and sent fifteen people to the hospital.
The village of Pomas was hardest hit. French authorities say hundreds of homes have been damaged and rescue crews are still working through the area this morning.
Pomas is in the Bordeaux region, which is known for wine production.
It is south of Bordeaux, near the Pyrenees mountain range, along the border with Spain.
Which is where the Bordeaux region is.
The tornado struck late yesterday afternoon local time. No deaths have been reported. We will have more on this as French authorities release additional information.
To Singapore now, where authorities have charged a British man two years after an alleged theft at the airport.
The twenty-six-year-old man is accused of stealing a denim jacket from an airport shop back in twenty-twenty-four and has now been charged.
He faces up to seven years in prison under Singapore law.
Seven years for a jacket?
Singapore has strict sentencing laws. The charge is theft from a commercial establishment.
That is a very expensive jacket.
The case is scheduled for court next month.
To China now, where officials are warning they will safeguard their interests after the United States expanded sanctions against Iran.
The United States has threatened to isolate nations that continue to do business with Tehran. Iran sells much of its oil to China.
Beijing released a statement this morning saying it will protect what it calls legitimate trade relationships.
The State Department has not responded to the Chinese statement as of this hour.
An update now on the wildfire near Reno. Firefighters say the blaze is about one quarter contained this morning.
That is progress from yesterday, when crews reported the fire was completely uncontained. But officials are warning that winds could fan the flames for at least two more days.
Thousands of residents remain under evacuation orders. Seven firefighters have been injured and more than fifteen thousand acres have burned since the fire began.
Crews are working around the clock. The forecast calls for calmer winds by midweek.
In the United Kingdom, a man has died after a police pursuit ended in a crash.
A woman was also seriously injured in the crash and remains in critical condition this morning. Authorities have not released the identities of either person.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct is investigating. That is the standard procedure in the UK when a pursuit ends in a fatality.
No further details have been released.
That is the World Desk.
Still ahead this morning on KRAK 11 News - a case that started with a single phone call and ended with a jury verdict. Criminal Intent is next.
Right after this.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good morning. Time for the KRAK 11 Blotter.
We have four Florida Man Tributes this morning.
Four. And one of them involves a duck traveling at seventy-three miles per hour.
That cannot end well.
We begin this morning at SeaWorld Orlando. Back in October of last year, a woman riding the Mako roller coaster was struck in the face by a duck.
The lawsuit alleges the duck struck her during the ride. The coaster reaches seventy-three miles per hour.
SeaWorld has not commented on the incident. That brings our Florida Man count to two hundred and twelve tributes in forty-four weeks.
Also from our tribute file: back in March of last year, Michigan wildlife officials announced a plan to gas Canada geese at problematic sites across the state.
The DNR said at the time the dead geese would be taken to a landfill while they worked to implement a program to process the meat safely.
Officials cited aggressive behavior and droppings as reasons for the culling program.
In Ohio, back in January of last year, two sanitation workers escaped injury when a garbage truck exploded while they were collecting trash in Whitehall.
The explosion was caught on camera. Both workers were thrown clear and sustained only minor injuries.
Officials believe hazardous material in the compactor caused the blast. The investigation is complete.
And in Pontiac, Michigan, back in February of last year, a man was allegedly set on fire while sleeping during a prank that was broadcast live on social media.
The victim told reporters he suffers from seizures and was unable to defend himself. He said viewers were giving instructions to the people in the room.
Prosecutors charged multiple suspects in connection with the incident. The case is still making its way through the courts.
That is the Blotter.
Still ahead this morning on KRAK 11 News — Animals. And the heron is still on top.
Sixteen consecutive hours now.
It is a very compelling heron.
We will have the full countdown in just a few minutes.
ANIMALS
Good morning. It is seven o'clock and time for Animals.
Three videos this morning. We count them by how many views a video has gained in the last four days, not the total.
The chart has been remarkably steady.
Number three. One hundred and twenty pounds of dog, hiding from ice, behind a two-year-old. Posted by Tiny Boss Big Dog on August twentieth.
Four million two hundred and fifty-one thousand new views in the last four days. Unchanged since the last count.
Number two. When Kindness Goes Both Ways. Posted by Windypaws. Seven million nine hundred and sixty-seven thousand new views.
Also unchanged. YouTube's own trending chart places it at number three.
And number one. Fisherman Found This Heron Fighting For Its Life. Posted by Sassy on August twenty-first. Nine million two hundred and forty-six thousand new views.
That video has now led our countdown for sixteen consecutive hours.
Sixteen hours.
All three are on the KRAK 11 News Reel. The link is in the description.
Still ahead this morning - a quick look at sports. Magnus Carlsen has won twelve consecutive Esports World Cup chess titles and remains unbeaten in the tournament.
That is coming up.
A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS
A quick look at the scoreboard.
Thirteen in a row now.
I have been keeping track.
Magnus Carlsen has won the Esports World Cup chess title again. That is thirteen consecutive wins in the tournament. He remains unbeaten since it began.
Pete Crow-Armstrong hit a walk-off home run last night as the Cubs beat the White Sox, four to three. First rookie in franchise history to end a game that way.
Honda's Formula One team says it only realized the full scale of its engine problems back in January. They are working on fixes for next season.
Number four Ohio State opens its season this weekend. Yahoo Sports has them ranked fourth in the nation going into playoff competition.
Coming up at the top of the hour - breaking news, the stories Wexler County is talking about, and everything you need to know this morning. That is the next KRAK 11 News.
We will see you in a moment.
