KRAK 11 NEWS
Good morning. This is KRAK 11 News at four o'clock in the morning. I am Chip Marlowe.
And I am Deb Sarkissian. Coming up this hour on KRAK 11 News: Kit Harington replaces Nicholas Hoult as Gilderoy Lockhart in HBO's Harry Potter series after scheduling issues forced the change.
Criminal Intent: back in August of twenty twenty-four, someone in Gulfport, Mississippi accidentally texted a police officer about smoking. The officer's reply went viral. We have that exchange.
Animals: Fisherman Found This Heron Fighting For Its Life has led our countdown for thirteen consecutive hours and gained eight million eight hundred and eighty-one thousand new views in the last four days.
And A Quick Look at Sports: the United Kingdom will share classified technology with Ukraine to help them manufacture long-range missiles on their own soil.
That is not sports.
It is on the wire under sports.
The wire is having a very long night.
We will sort it out. The World Desk is coming up in just a moment, with more on the Harry Potter casting and why Nicholas Hoult had to step away. Stay with us.
THE WORLD DESK
Good morning. Welcome to the World Desk.
Four in the morning and we are covering six continents.
We do not rest.
You got here at two thirty.
We begin this morning in China, where new numbers show the country now operates more than two million industrial robots in its factories.
That is the highest concentration of industrial robots anywhere in the world, and the number is climbing faster than any other country. These are assembly line machines, welding equipment, packaging systems.
This is not the humanoid robots that have been getting attention in the press. These are the machines doing the actual manufacturing work.
The kind of automation that changes an entire sector without making headlines. Two million machines, and that number is expected to double in the next four years.
From Iran this morning, officials say they are fully prepared to counter the expanded U.S. economic sanctions announced last week.
The U.S. Treasury Department has called the new restrictions economic D-Day. Tehran issued a statement saying it has a plan in place to address them, though officials did not specify what that plan involves.
The sanctions target Iran's energy exports and banking sector. Iran says it is, quote, fully prepared, to respond.
And an update to the Harry Potter casting story we brought you earlier this morning. Kit Harington has replaced Nicholas Hoult as Gilderoy Lockhart in HBO's upcoming series.
Hoult was announced two weeks ago but dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. Harington steps into the role. That is his third project with HBO after Game of Thrones.
Lockhart appears in the second book of the series. Production begins later this year.
Gilderoy Lockhart. That is the narcissist professor.
The one who cannot actually do magic.
Perfect casting.

The wildfire near Reno remains uncontained this morning. Seven firefighters have been injured and fifteen thousand acres have burned since the fire began.
Thousands of residents have been evacuated. Officials say crews are working to establish containment lines, but high winds are complicating the effort.
No structures have been lost so far, but fire officials say conditions remain dangerous and the fire is moving fast.
And from the world of professional soccer this morning, some of the sport's biggest names have signed a letter calling for change at FIFA. The letter targets federation president Gianni Infantino directly.
Players from England, Spain, France and Germany have united behind the letter. They are asking for changes to the international calendar, player workload, and the way decisions are made at the top of the sport.
FIFA has not responded to the letter yet. The players say they are prepared to take further action if necessary.
That is rare. You do not often see players from four different leagues unite on something like this.
It is not.
Still ahead this morning on KRAK 11 News, Criminal Intent is back. We have three cases from Wexler County, and one of them involves a stolen lawnmower that was found inside a church.
Inside the church.
We will explain in a few minutes.
That is the World Desk.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good morning. Time now for the KRAK 11 Blotter.
Four Florida Man Tributes this morning. All of them from last year except one.
The exception involves a text message, a police officer, and a very unfortunate choice of recipient.
We begin with that one. Back in August of twenty twenty-four. Gulfport, Mississippi. Someone needed to arrange something discreet with a friend.
They texted the wrong number. The number belonged to a Gulfport police officer.
The officer responded, quote, I'm on my way.
The person realized their mistake very quickly. No charges were filed. The screenshot went viral.
That brings our Florida Man Tribute count to two hundred and eight in forty-four weeks. Back in November of last year, people in Los Angeles looked up and saw something they were not expecting.
The Northern Lights. Visible as far south as San Diego County.
Aurora borealis. Usually confined to latitudes near the Arctic Circle. Geomagnetic activity pushed the visible band south, and for one night Southern California got a show that belongs in Alaska.
Also back in November of last year, a Mississippi woman shot and killed one of forty-three monkeys that escaped from a truck after a highway accident.
The woman told investigators the animal was on her property and she feared for her children. No charges have been filed. The remaining monkeys were recaptured.
And back in October of last year, Oklahoma. The State Bureau of Investigation opened an inquiry after a teacher died at a restaurant.
Investigators say she drank a beverage that contained an industrial cleaning solution. The investigation is ongoing. No charges have been announced.
That is grim.
It is.
Lighter note. The wrong number text. The officer involved said later he gets messages like that about once a month.
And he responds every time?
He said it is part of community outreach.
Still ahead this morning, Animals. The heron is still in front, and the lead keeps growing.
Thirteen straight hours.
ANIMALS
Time now for Animals.
The KRAK 11 animal countdown. We track the videos that are gaining views fastest, not the ones that already have them.
Three videos tonight. All posted in the last four days, all climbing hard, and all three unchanged since the last count.
At number three: one hundred and twenty pounds of dog, hiding from ice, behind a two-year-old. That is the title. Posted by Tiny Boss Big Dog on the twentieth of August. Four million seventy-eight thousand nine hundred and eighty-eight new views in the last four days.
One hundred and twenty pounds.
Behind a two-year-old.
At number two: When Kindness Goes Both Ways. Posted by Windypaws on the twentieth of August. Seven million eight hundred and forty-six thousand three hundred and ninety-two new views in the last four days.
And at number one, for the thirteenth consecutive hour: Fisherman Found This Heron Fighting For Its Life. Posted by Sassy on the twenty-first of August. Eight million eight hundred and eighty-one thousand five hundred and twenty-eight new views in the last four days.
Thirteen hours at number one.
Nearly nine million new views in four days.
All three of those are on the KRAK 11 News Reel. The link is in the description.
If you are here on YouTube and you have not subscribed yet, we would be grateful if you did. It helps us more than you would think, and it costs you nothing at all.
Coming up in just a few minutes: a quick look at sports. The Cubs needed extra innings last night, and Heather Watson is through to the fourth round of U.S. Open qualifying after a straight-sets win over Anett Kontaveit.
That is next.
A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS
A quick look at sports.
Chess, baseball, and college football getting ready.
One of them went eleven innings.
Magnus Carlsen has defended his chess title at the twenty twenty-six Esports World Cup, defeating challenger Ding Liren in a decisive final match. That is ten consecutive titles for Carlsen, who remains unbeaten in the tournament since it began.
Pete Crow-Armstrong hit for the cycle last night and drove in the winning run as the Cubs beat the White Sox five to four in eleven innings. He is the first Cubs player to hit for the cycle in a walk-off game since nineteen seventy-six.
Number four Ohio State opens preseason camp this morning as the Buckeyes look to win the Big Ten title and make a deep playoff run. They host Michigan on November twenty-ninth.
You love a cycle.
I love an eleventh inning.
Still ahead this morning, the next KRAK 11 News at the top of the hour. We will have more on the wildfire near Reno and a live update from the sheriff's office on the briefing scheduled for ten.
That is sports. Good morning, Wexler County.
