KRAK 11 NEWS
Good morning. This is KRAK 11 News at two o'clock in the morning. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. We have a full hour ahead starting with The World Desk, where a French tourist has died in Death Valley after his car became stuck in the mud during a hundred and sixteen degree heat wave.
Then Criminal Intent brings you a Florida Man Tribute from back in May of last year, when a Missouri mother discovered a snake had joined her for the drive to baseball practice.
That is our two hundred and fifth Florida Man Tribute.
Animals has the latest from the KRAK 11 countdown, where a heron fighting for its life has now led for eleven consecutive hours. And A Quick Look At Sports covers the wildfires forcing Indonesians to pray for rain through choking smoke.
Still ahead this morning on The World Desk: how a sixty-eight-year-old man ended up alone in the salt flats during the hottest August Death Valley has seen in years. That is next on KRAK 11 News.
THE WORLD DESK
Good morning. You are watching KRAK 11 News.
Good morning, Chip. The World Desk this hour.
We have new video from France, developments from Washington, and the trade dispute with Canada continues to escalate.
We begin with recovery efforts underway in southern France this morning after yesterday's tornado. More than forty people injured when the storm struck villages near Pau in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques region.
Several homes destroyed, power lines down across a wide area. French emergency services released new video showing the extent of the damage overnight.
The Pyrénées-Atlantiques. That is the Atlantic coast of France.
The mountain range on the border with Spain.
Near the Atlantic.
In the mountains.
Either way, our thoughts are with them.
From Washington this morning, the Trump administration announced it has removed Syria from the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism, marking a significant shift in policy toward Damascus.
The decision comes as the administration engages with Syria's new president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, who formerly led a militant group linked to al-Qaeda. Syria had been on that list since nineteen seventy-nine.
Forty-six years.
The White House says the delisting reflects what they are calling a new beginning for Syria following the change in government.
In the trade dispute between the United States and Canada, President Trump announced this morning he is threatening new tariffs on automobiles, escalating the standoff over cross-border commerce.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded by accusing the president of attempting to destroy Canada's automotive industry. Carney said Canada would only resume trade negotiations if the United States comes to the table with what he called the right attitude.
That is diplomatic language for no.
Canada supplies about twenty percent of American oil imports. Ottawa is considering retaliatory measures focusing on energy, critical minerals, and automotive parts.
No timeline yet for when those measures might take effect.
And in California, authorities have confirmed the death of a sixty-eight-year-old French tourist whose car became stuck in Death Valley's salt flats during extreme heat. Temperatures at the time were one hundred and sixteen degrees.
Park rangers say the vehicle got stuck in mud in a remote area of the salt flats. The heat index made rescue efforts extremely difficult.
Death Valley is in California.
It is.
Last time we covered this you said it was in Nevada.
You said it was in Nevada. I corrected you.
Either way, we got there.
If you are watching on YouTube, we would be glad if you subscribed. It helps the station and it costs you nothing at all.
And in entertainment news, Kit Harington is returning to HBO. The Game of Thrones actor has been cast as Gilderoy Lockhart in the network's upcoming Harry Potter series. This is Harington's third project with HBO after Game of Thrones and the financial drama The Industry.
Gilderoy Lockhart is the vain Defense Against the Dark Arts professor introduced in the second Harry Potter book.
Kenneth Branagh played the role in the film version.
The new series does not have a release date yet. Production begins later this year.
That is the World Desk. Coming up in just a few minutes, CRIMINAL INTENT returns with a story from Michigan that involves a stolen vehicle, a police chase, and what authorities are calling a highly unusual set of circumstances.
That is later this morning on KRAK 11 News.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good morning. Time now for the KRAK 11 Blotter.
Four stories tonight from the archives. All of them strange.
We have reached two hundred and six Florida Man Tributes in forty-four weeks.
That is four point six tributes per week, Chip.
We begin tonight with a Florida Man Tribute from back in August of last year. A woman in San Fernando was rescued after becoming stuck inside a chimney.
Rescue crews don't know how the woman got stuck inside the chimney, according to reports.
Which is the most troubling detail in this entire report.
They got her out safely.
Back in July of last year, a Ring camera in Compton captured what the homeowner described as an extraterrestrial creature walking through a driveway and exiting through a back gate around one in the morning.
The homeowner believes it was an alien, according to local reports.
I have reviewed the description. It is a person in a sweatshirt.
Or that's what they want you to think.
Back in May of last year, a Missouri woman was driving her son to baseball practice when a coachwhip snake emerged from under the hood of her car. While she was driving.
The snake popped out from underneath the hood while the vehicle was in motion, according to local reports.
She pulled over safely. The snake was unharmed. The son still made it to baseball practice on time.
That is excellent parenting.
And finally tonight, back in August of last year, a company called Frida teamed up with OddFellows to produce and sell breast milk ice cream, marketed with the tagline 'just like mom used to make.'
The product was sold nationwide.
I have no follow-up questions and we are moving on.
That is wise.
Still ahead this morning on KRAK 11 News: a heron in distress, and the fisherman who noticed.
That's ANIMALS, coming up in just a few minutes.
ANIMALS
Good morning. This is the Good News Desk.

Eleven hours.
That is not changing for a while.
All three are on the KRAK 11 News Reel. The link is in the description.
If you are watching at two in the morning, we are very glad you turned up. Subscribing to the channel costs you nothing and it helps a small station stay on the air.
And tell us what you think in the comments. We read them and we answer them. I answer more than she does.
You answer at four in the morning.
Still ahead this morning: a quick look at sports, including one player who drove in the winning run after hitting for the cycle.
That is KRAK 11 News.
A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS
Time now for a quick look at sports.
Four results tonight and one of them is a record.
You love a record.
Magnus Carlsen has done it again. The Norwegian defended his chess title at the twenty twenty-six Esports World Cup, making it nine consecutive titles. He remains unbeaten in tournament play since the event began.
In Chicago, Pete Crow-Armstrong hit for the cycle and drove in the winning run as the Cubs beat the White Sox five to four in extra innings.
Heather Watson advanced to the fourth round of U.S. Open qualifying, defeating Anett Kontaveit six-three, seven-five.
And Ohio State opens the season Labor Day weekend against Wyoming. The Buckeyes are ranked number four in the Yahoo Sports preseason college football poll.
Coming up at the top of the hour — the next KRAK 11 News. We will be right back.
