KRAK 11 NEWS
Good evening. This is KRAK 11 News at twenty-one hundred hours. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. Coming up this hour on KRAK 11 - The World Desk, where Canada is deciding how to respond to American tariffs and the options are more serious than you might think.
Criminal Intent - a Florida man made a ten-thousand-dollar phone call back in February of last year, and the state just now sent him a check for it.
That's our one hundred and ninety-ninth Florida Man Tribute.
Animals - a fisherman in a small boat finds a heron that should not be alive, and what happens next has led our countdown for six straight hours.
And A Quick Look At Sports, where the Supreme Court has given the President a win on mail voting, but the Postal Service is still under a separate order not to act on it.
Still ahead tonight - The World Desk, where seventy percent of what Canada makes gets sold to one country, and that country just made them very angry.
KRAK 11 News starts now.
THE WORLD DESK
Good evening. Welcome back to KRAK 11 News.
I have six items tonight and three of them are about borders.
That is thematic.
It was not intentional.
We begin tonight with the trade dispute between the United States and Canada, which escalated again today as Canadian officials outlined possible retaliatory measures.
Canada sends roughly seventy percent of its exports to the United States, but officials say they are prepared to impose tariffs on American goods including dairy, steel, and certain agricultural products.
This is about the border states. Michigan, Minnesota, the northern tier.
It is about the entire Canadian economy and every U.S. state that trades with it. The border is five thousand five hundred miles long.
That is a very long border.
The talks have been suspended since Thursday. No new session has been scheduled.
In France, a tornado tore through several villages in the south today, injuring more than forty people and destroying homes.
The tornado struck in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques region near the Spanish border. Emergency crews are still searching damaged buildings tonight.
That is unusual weather for the southern coast.
It is unusual weather for anywhere in France. Tornadoes of this strength are rare in Europe.
I had it in my notes as the Mediterranean zone.
The Mediterranean is to the east. This is the Atlantic coast, near Biarritz.
I have it now.
The Trump administration announced today that it has removed Syria from the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism.
The decision follows meetings between U.S. officials and Syria's new president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, who was formerly affiliated with al-Qaeda linked militant groups.
That is a significant policy shift from the previous administration.
It is a significant shift from this administration's policy as recently as last month. The State Department says the decision reflects changes on the ground in Damascus.
And Syria had been on that list since the nineteen-seventies.
Since nineteen seventy-nine. Forty-six years.
In China, the factory robot workforce continues to grow at a rate faster than anywhere else in the world.
More than two million industrial robots are now operating in Chinese factories, and manufacturers say they are scaling up production rapidly to meet both domestic and international demand.
This is the humanoid robot story. The ones that look like people.
Most of them do not look like people at all. They are welding arms, assembly systems, and automated conveyor management.
I had this filed under automation in the Pacific Rim.
That works.
You have been doing this for a long time.
I have.
Still ahead tonight, Criminal Intent is next.
We have three stories and one of them happened at a public library.
That is unusual.
It is.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Time now for the KRAK 11 Blotter.
And tonight we mark a milestone. This is our two-hundredth Florida Man Tribute in forty-four weeks of broadcasting.
Two hundred.
Every one of them earned. And we are starting tonight with a pursuit that ended not with a squad car, but with hooves.
Back in February of last year, Jacksonville police responded to a drug deal in progress. The suspect fled on foot. Officers gave chase. And then the mounted unit arrived.
The horse's name was Knight. The suspect attempted to outrun a twelve-hundred-pound animal bred for endurance. He did not succeed.
Knight closed the distance in seconds, pinned the suspect to a fence, and held position while officers made the arrest. Textbook mounted pursuit.
The suspect was charged with possession with intent to sell and resisting arrest. Police said Knight received extra carrots.
Also in February of last year, a Florida Highway Patrol trooper attempted a traffic stop on Interstate Four. The driver refused to pull over. He was wearing a Dalmatian onesie.
Prosecutors alleged he led troopers on a twenty-minute pursuit through two counties, drove into oncoming traffic, and nearly struck multiple vehicles before crashing into a retention pond.
He exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. He was apprehended wearing the onesie, which was now wet.
Charged with fleeing and eluding, reckless driving, and driving with a suspended license.
In Clermont, back in February of last year, a man driving a pickup truck allegedly followed another driver to an intersection, exited his vehicle, and displayed a firearm.
Police said the incident stemmed from a traffic dispute. The suspect was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
And the final tribute tonight: a ten-thousand-dollar phone call. Back in February of last year, a Florida man called nine-one-one with information about a double homicide suspect in New York.
The tip led to the capture of a fugitive wanted in connection with two murders. The caller received the full reward.
That is a significant return on a phone call.
Two hundred tributes, Chip.
Forty-four weeks. Every one of them earned.
Still ahead tonight on KRAK 11 News: the animal video that has now led our countdown for six consecutive hours, and the heron rescue that gained eight million views in four days. Animals is next.
You are watching KRAK 11.
ANIMALS
Time now for Animals - the Good News Desk.
Three videos from the last four days.
We count by how many new views they have gained, not how many they carry in total.
Number three comes to us from Tiny Boss Big Dog.
One hundred and twenty pounds of dog, hiding from ice, behind a two-year-old. Three million six hundred and eighty-four thousand new views in four days.
The title is accurate.
It is.
Number two - from Windypaws - when kindness goes both ways. Seven million five hundred and forty-six thousand new views. That one remains at number two since the last count.
And number one on the KRAK 11 animal countdown - from Sassy - fisherman found this heron fighting for its life.
Eight million two hundred and seventy-seven thousand new views in the last four days. That is six consecutive hours at number one.
All three are on the KRAK 11 News Reel - the link is in the description.
Still ahead tonight on KRAK 11 News - a quick look at sports. We will have the latest from the U.S. Open, and a story involving two million industrial robots that Chip has filed under automation in the Pacific Rim.
It belongs there.
That is coming up in a few minutes.
A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS
A quick look at sports.
Six in a row, Deb. Six consecutive titles.
I knew you would lead with that.
Magnus Carlsen defended his chess title at the twenty twenty-six Esports World Cup, making it six consecutive wins. The Norwegian grandmaster is undoubtedly the greatest of all time.
Pete Crow-Armstrong made history for the Cubs tonight with a walk-off hit against the White Sox. The Cubs win it four to three, and Crow-Armstrong becomes the youngest Cub ever with a walk-off hit in franchise history.
Heather Watson is through to the second round of U.S. Open qualifying. She won in straight sets and moves on.
Still ahead on the next KRAK 11 News at the top of the hour — we will tell you which animal video just passed eight million views in four days, and why the heron is still leading the countdown.
That is sports. Thank you for watching KRAK 11 News.
