KRAK 11 NEWS
Good evening. This is KRAK 11 News at seventeen hundred hours. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. Coming up this hour on KRAK 11 News — The World Desk, where a wildfire outside Reno has forced nearly ninety thousand people from their homes.
Criminal Intent — another Florida Man Tribute from our archives, this one from back in March of last year involving an UberEats driver and an argument over alcohol.
Our Florida Man count is up to one hundred and ninety.
We are proud of that. Animals — a fisherman finds a heron in trouble, and the video has now taken over the number one spot on the KRAK 11 animal countdown.
And A Quick Look at Sports, where Morgan Rogers scores on debut for Chelsea. That is coming up in just a few minutes on KRAK 11 News.
Let's begin.
THE WORLD DESK
Good evening. You are watching KRAK 11 News.
We have updates tonight from Nevada, from Damascus, and from the United Kingdom.
The Damascus story is a sentencing. Life in prison.
It is. We will get to that. Let's begin with the wildfire outside Reno, where evacuation orders now cover nearly ninety thousand residents across a fifteen-thousand-acre burn zone.
Winds shifted overnight and pushed the fire north toward Lake Tahoe, which is right at the California border.
About thirty miles southwest of Reno, in the Sierra Nevada range.
Which is part of the Rockies.
It is a separate range.
But they are connected.
They are not. Containment remains at fourteen percent. No timeline yet on when residents can return home.
In Syria tonight, a Damascus court has sentenced the former grand mufti to life in prison. Ahmed Hassoun was convicted of crimes including inciting civil war and complicity in intentional killing.
Hassoun served under the Assad government for more than twenty years and held the highest Sunni religious office in the country.
He was arrested in December when the Assad regime collapsed.
In the United Kingdom tonight, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are planning what the press there is calling a permanent return.
The couple left royal duties in twenty twenty and have been living in California. Reports now say they are looking at properties in the Cotswolds.
That is the rural region northwest of London.
West of Oxford.
Northwest of Oxford as well, yes.
So I was close.
Sources say the couple will focus on charity work. Prince Harry has stepped down from the board of African Parks after the organization admitted human rights abuses in the Congo.
Also in the United Kingdom, a nineteen-year-old man has pleaded guilty to piloting a boat carrying one hundred and sixty-five migrants across the English Channel.
He was arrested last month after the boat was intercepted by Border Force vessels off the Kent coast.
Sentencing is scheduled for next month.
That is the world desk.
You corrected me three times in five minutes.
I did.
The Sierras and the Rockies are connected.
They are not.
I am going to look that up.
Please do.
Still ahead tonight, Criminal Intent. A story about a man who called the police on himself.
He did. Twice.
We will tell you why in just a moment.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good evening. This is the KRAK 11 Blotter, and tonight we present four more entries in the Florida Man canon, all from the spring of last year.
One hundred and ninety-one tributes in forty-three weeks.
We are building a library.
We begin with a shark falling from the sky in South Carolina back in June of last year. Disc golfers at a course near Myrtle Beach watched a bird drop its lunch directly onto the fairway.
The shark was small, authorities said. The bird was large.
Back in March of last year, a Deltona man allegedly attacked an UberEats driver over an alcohol delivery. Deputies say the driver arrived at his home late Saturday night and the situation escalated.
He is charged with aggravated assault and simple battery, prosecutors allege.
Also in March of last year, a Florida man allegedly pointed a gun at another customer outside a sports bar after becoming upset about the karaoke machine not working properly.
Police say the other customer tried to calm him down.
That did not work.
And back in April of last year, a Florida man was arrested at Topsail State Park after he allegedly exposed himself at a crowded public beach.
Deputies say he had beer and women's underwear with him at the time of arrest.
Those are unrelated details.
Authorities did not confirm that.
Four tributes, four arrests, and one shark that never saw it coming.
The shark was unharmed, we are told.
That is good to hear.
Still ahead tonight on KRAK 11 News, we have ANIMALS. And this hour we will tell you what knocked Fisherman Found This Heron off the top of the countdown after just three days.
The new number one is not what you think.
That is next.
ANIMALS
Time now for Animals. The Good News Desk.
We count down by views gained in the last three days, not by total. It is a different list.
YouTube has its own trending chart. We do not use it.
We start tonight at number three.
Number three. 120 Pounds of Dog. Hiding From Ice. Behind a Two-Year-Old. Posted by Tiny Boss Big Dog. Three million three hundred and seventy-six thousand seven hundred and thirteen new views in the last three days.
That one has been steady at number three all day.
Number two. When Kindness Goes Both Ways. Posted by Windypaws. Seven million three hundred and thirty thousand eight hundred and eighty-seven new views in the last three days.
That held number one for thirty-six consecutive hours before it moved down to number two this afternoon.
And number one tonight. Fisherman Found This Heron Fighting For Its Life. Posted by Sassy. Seven million seven hundred and forty-nine thousand three hundred and eighty-seven new views.
That has been number one now for two hours.
All three are on the KRAK 11 News Reel. The link is in the description.
Still ahead tonight, a quick look at sports. Colton Herta won the first IndyCar race ever held in Washington D.C., and the President was watching.
We will have that in just a moment.
A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS
A quick look at sports.
We have got football from London, racing from Washington, and chess from someone who simply will not stop winning.
Three years running.
Chelsea beat Fulham two to one at Craven Cottage. Morgan Rogers scored on his Chelsea debut as Xabi Alonso's side took all three points in West London.
Colton Herta won the second IndyCar race ever held in Washington D.C., finishing seventeen seconds clear of the field in a dominant performance.
And Magnus Carlsen defended his Esports World Cup chess title for the third consecutive year, beating Hikaru Nakamura three games to one in the final.
The man is thirty-four years old and still the best player on earth. That is your sports. Coming up at the top of the hour on KRAK 11 News, we are going back to the Reno wildfire.
