KRAK 11 NEWS
Good afternoon. This is KRAK 11 News at sixteen hundred hours. I am Chip Marlowe.
I am Deb Sarkissian. This hour: The World Desk, where nearly ninety thousand people have been ordered to evacuate as a wildfire closes on Reno, Nevada.
Criminal Intent, where a Florida man faces charges after threatening a woman with a machete back in December of twenty twenty-four. That is our one hundred and eighty-eighth Florida Man Tribute.
That is a lot of Florida men.
Animals, where a fisherman found a heron fighting for its life, and seven and a half million people have watched what happened next. That is our new number one.
And A Quick Look at Sports, where IndyCar came to Washington DC and the president was there to watch. Coming up in just a few minutes on KRAK 11 News, The World Desk.
Right after this.
THE WORLD DESK
Good afternoon. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. The World Desk this afternoon.
We have updates from Nevada, Washington, and the United Kingdom.
We begin with Nevada, where the wildfire approaching Reno has now burned fifteen thousand acres, up from ten thousand five hundred this morning.
Evacuation orders have been expanded to cover nearly ninety thousand residents, and fire officials say the blaze remains completely uncontained.
That is a very large fire.
It is. Wind conditions are making it difficult for crews on the ground, and the terrain is working against them.
Reno sits right up against the Sierra Nevada.
It does, and that makes containment harder. We will have more on this as the situation develops.
Turning now to Washington, where Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has announced what he is calling the greatest financial offensive ever launched against Iran.
Secretary Bessent says the United States will sever all economic ties with Tehran and that any nation partnering financially with Iran will also face isolation from U.S. markets.
That is a significant expansion from what he said this morning.
It is. The statement now explicitly includes third-party nations, which raises the stakes considerably for countries that trade with both the United States and Iran.
Most of those are in the Gulf region.
Many are, and some are in Europe and Asia. The Treasury Department has not yet released a full list of targeted countries.
In the United Kingdom, Prince Harry has stepped down from the board of African Parks, a wildlife charity that admitted last year to human rights abuses committed by its rangers.
The charity operates conservation projects in eleven African countries. Last year it acknowledged that rangers had committed serious abuses, including beatings and sexual assault.
How long was he on the board?
Since twenty seventeen. The announcement comes ahead of his scheduled return to the United Kingdom later this month.
That is difficult timing.
It is. The charity has said it is implementing reforms, but the Prince's office has not given a reason for the departure beyond saying his commitments have changed.
Also in the United Kingdom, a nineteen-year-old man has pleaded guilty to endangering lives at sea after piloting a small boat carrying one hundred and sixty-five migrants across the English Channel.
That was a then-record number of people in a single dinghy. The court heard the crossing took place in rough seas and that several passengers required medical treatment after landing.
One hundred and sixty-five people in a dinghy.
In a vessel designed for far fewer. Sentencing is scheduled for next month.
That is the news from overseas.
It is. And if you are watching on YouTube, a subscription costs you nothing and means a great deal to a station this size.
We answer the comments as well.
You answer them at four in the morning.
The news does not sleep, Deb.
No, but you could.
Coming up in just a few minutes on KRAK 11 News, Criminal Intent, and a case that took fifteen years to close.
Stay with us.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good afternoon. It is time for the KRAK 11 Blotter.
We have another installment of the KRAK 11 Florida Man Tribute today, and this one celebrates the creative spirit of the personalized license plate application process.
Four stories from the Sunshine State. All archived. All remarkable.
We begin with the Florida Department of Motor Vehicles, and the list of vanity plates they will not allow on the road.
Back in December of twenty twenty-four, the state released its annual list of rejected personalized license plates, and the creativity on display is genuinely impressive.
Among those rejected: FARTZ, zero-NLYFN, zero-two-SEXXY, and H-four-WK-two-AH. The state drew a line, and I believe the line was drawn correctly.
That is one hundred and eighty-nine Florida Man Tributes in forty-three weeks.
Also back in December of twenty twenty-four, a Lake County man was arrested after deputies say he threatened a woman with a machete during a road rage incident, then fled the scene on foot.
Police located him a short distance away, still carrying the machete. He was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Police said.
Back in January of last year, a man was arrested in Florida after police say he exposed himself to customers inside a T.J. Maxx, including children.
Officers located the suspect in the parking lot and took him into custody. He faces charges of indecent exposure and lewd and lascivious behavior.
Officers said.
And back in March of last year, a Pasco County man who had been released from state prison just three months earlier was arrested again after deputies say they found methamphetamine in his underwear during a traffic stop.
Deputies say he told them he had just smoked marijuana in the car, which also had children inside. When asked about the methamphetamine, he allegedly told the deputy, quote, there's nothing wrong with drugs.
Deputies say.
The court may disagree.
The court almost certainly will disagree.
Coming up in just a few minutes, we have the animal countdown. Fisherman Found This Heron Fighting For Its Life is still the number one video on the planet.

That is next on KRAK 11 News.

The Cubs beat the White Sox four to three last night on Pete Crow-Armstrong's walk-off home run — first Cub ever to do that in the crosstown series.
