KRAK 11 NEWS
Good afternoon, Wexler County. This is KRAK 11 News at twelve hundred hours. Chip Marlowe.
Deb Sarkissian. The US Treasury Secretary says Iran is facing what he calls the greatest financial offensive ever mounted. That is our lead on THE WORLD DESK.
CRIMINAL INTENT this hour: a man pulled over on a lawn mower, stopped for a traffic violation, and arrested when deputies found methamphetamine and marijuana in a bag between his feet.
We have now aired one hundred and seventy-nine Florida Man Tributes.
And we mean every word. ANIMALS this afternoon: the video that has led our countdown for thirty-three consecutive hours now has gained more than seven million new views.
A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS after that. Liverpool's Harvey Elliott was left out of the matchday squad for the opening weekend of the Premier League season, and his future at the club is now uncertain.
Still ahead on THE WORLD DESK: the Treasury Secretary says any nation partnering with Iran financially will be isolated. We have details on that in a few minutes.
Stay with us.
THE WORLD DESK
Good afternoon. This is THE WORLD DESK.
We have ocean temperatures, queue disputes on a Welsh mountain, and Prince Harry stepping down from a conservation board.
The queue disputes are my favorite part of this hour.
I thought they might be.
We begin with news from the European climate service, where scientists have confirmed the world's oceans have reached the highest temperature ever recorded.
The European Copernicus climate change service released the data this morning. Dr. Samantha Burgess, who leads the monitoring program, says the record is another clear signal of an ocean under growing stress.
The new measurements come as El Niño continues to strengthen across the Pacific, driving global ocean temperatures even higher than last year's record.
That's the Pacific warming pattern that affects weather worldwide.
It is. And Dr. Burgess says the warming trend is accelerating faster than their models predicted even two years ago.
Deb, what does that do to the Southern Hemisphere? They're heading into their hot season now.
They're heading into spring, actually. It's winter there right now. But the concern is what happens when summer does arrive in December.
Right. December. I knew that.
You did not.
In the United Kingdom, there have been disagreements on Wales' highest mountain over something most of us learned in kindergarten: how to wait your turn.
Hikers attempting to reach the summit of Yr Wyddfa, which is the Welsh name for Mount Snowdon, have been forming queues at popular viewpoints along the trail.
Some climbers are waiting politely in line to take photographs at the scenic overlooks. Others are bypassing the queue entirely and walking straight to the front.
And that has led to arguments on the mountain.
It has. One hiker told reporters, and I'm quoting here, 'It's not Alton Towers.' That's a theme park in England.
But apparently some people think it should work like one.
The mountain sees more than half a million visitors every year. Local guides say they've never seen queue disputes at this scale before.
Prince Harry has stepped down from the board of African Parks, a wildlife conservation charity he has been involved with for more than a decade.
The organization announced the change this morning. Prince Harry joined the board in twenty thirteen and has been a vocal advocate for the charity's work protecting wildlife across the continent.
Last year, African Parks admitted that human rights abuses were committed by its rangers in Congo-Brazzaville. The organization launched an internal investigation and implemented new oversight measures.
That's the country on the Atlantic coast, north of Angola.
It is. The charity manages protected areas in eleven African countries and employs more than four thousand people, most of them local rangers.
Prince Harry's statement this morning thanked the organization for its conservation work but did not address the timing of his departure.

It helps more than you'd think.
We went to the map during the break to settle something Deb and I have been arguing about for the last ten minutes.
It wasn't an argument.
You had Gordo pull up a globe.
I wanted to show you where Congo-Brazzaville was.
And I was right. Atlantic coast, north of Angola.
You said it was next to Ghana.
I said it was near Ghana.
They're two thousand miles apart.
Same ocean.
Still ahead this afternoon, CRIMINAL INTENT. We have a case from Nevada that involves cremated remains, a storage unit, and a very surprised renter.
We will be right back.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good afternoon. This is the KRAK 11 Blotter.
One hundred and seventy-nine tributes in forty-three weeks. That is a streak.
Florida has made this segment what it is.
They have worked very hard.
Deputies in Florida pulled over a suspect last week who was operating a lawn mower on a public road. The mower was red. The suspect was cooperative. The bag between his feet contained methamphetamine and marijuana.
Police say the suspect is facing felony narcotics charges.
The lawn mower was not reported stolen. The narcotics were.
That is one hundred and eighty Florida Man Tributes in forty-three weeks.
Florida continues to lead the nation in creative vehicle choices during the commission of a felony.
Prosecutors allege.
Prosecutors allege. The suspect has not yet entered a plea and bond has not been set. We will continue to monitor this case as it moves through the system.
The bag was discovered during a routine traffic stop. The deputy had stopped the mower for failing to yield at an intersection. The suspect provided identification without incident.
Police say the narcotics were in plain view once the deputy approached the vehicle.
The suspect is being held at the county jail pending arraignment.
The red lawn mower has been impounded as evidence.
It was not street legal.

That is the Blotter.

Still ahead this afternoon, a quick look at sports. A man who has not played professionally since twenty twenty-two was just thrown out of a game he was not in.
That is next on KRAK 11 News.
A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS
A quick look at sports.
Premier League, college football, a walk-off in Chicago, and the greatest chess player alive just did it again.
That is a very good day of sports.
Liverpool opened the Premier League season with a win at Newcastle, but Harvey Elliott was left out of the matchday squad entirely. His future at Anfield now looks uncertain after the omission.
The Cubs beat the White Sox in walk-off fashion, and Pete Crow-Armstrong made history doing it. First Cub ever to hit a walk-off home run in the crosstown series.
In college football, Ohio State comes in at number four in the Yahoo Sports preseason Top 25. The Buckeyes are looking to beat Michigan and make a playoff run this season.
And Magnus Carlsen defended his chess title at the twenty twenty-six Esports World Cup. Still the greatest of all time.
Still ahead this afternoon, the next KRAK 11 News at the top of the hour. We will have the latest on the Nevada wildfire and the ocean heat record.
