KRAK 11 NEWS
Good morning. This is KRAK 11 News at eleven hundred hours. I am Chip Marlowe.
I am Deb Sarkissian. Coming up this hour on KRAK 11 News: the wildfire approaching Reno has now burned more than ten thousand acres, and nearly ninety thousand people are under evacuation orders this morning.
The World Desk. Criminal Intent: a Florida man jumps into a river to avoid arrest while police are still questioning him. That happened back in August of twenty twenty-four, and it is Florida Man Tribute number one hundred and seventy-six.
Animals: When Kindness Goes Both Ways has led our countdown for thirty-two hours now, and the view count is still climbing.
And A Quick Look At Sports: Enes Kanter Freedom is ejected from a WNBA game after a verbal altercation with a player on the court.
I did not know he still went to games.
All of that and more this morning on KRAK 11 News. The World Desk is next.
THE WORLD DESK
Good morning. This is the World Desk.
We have courts blocked in Africa, a wildfire that will not stop, and children flying kites that have become an international incident.
It is that kind of morning.
We begin in Zambia, where access to the country's courts remains blocked this morning, just hours before the deadline for filing election petitions.
Opposition parties have been trying to file challenges to President Hakainde Hichilema's re-election two weeks ago, but the courts have been physically inaccessible since yesterday.
The deadline for filing those petitions is at midnight tonight Zambian time. Preparations for President Hichilema's second inauguration are continuing.
So they are running out the clock.
It appears that way. The opposition says it will not accept the result without a hearing.
Zambia is near the equator, correct?
It is in southern Africa, between the Congo and Zimbabwe. About fifteen hundred miles south of the equator.
I thought so.
In Nevada, the wildfire burning near Reno has now consumed eleven thousand two hundred acres and remains completely uncontained this morning.
That is seven hundred acres larger than when we last reported at oh-nine-hundred. Nearly ninety thousand people remain under evacuation orders in the outskirts of Reno.
Firefighters say containment lines are not holding and winds are expected to pick up again this afternoon.
Residents told reporters they are quote scared to death. Many left with only what they could carry.
We will continue to follow this throughout the morning.
In the Middle East, Israel is warning of what it calls a forceful response to kites being flown into Israeli territory from Gaza.
Several kites have been found in Israeli border communities in recent days. Hamas says the kites were launched by children in Gaza.
The Israeli government did not specify what that forceful response would be. It called the kites a security concern.
Hamas is denying any organized effort and says children have been flying kites near the fence for weeks.
Kites.
Kites.
And we are grateful you are watching this morning. If you are on YouTube and you have not subscribed, we would appreciate it. Costs you nothing, and it does help a station this size.
And we mean that.
Deb, what is the capital of Zambia?
Lusaka.
I knew that.
You did not.
I was reasonably confident.
Coming up in just a few minutes, Criminal Intent. A Hillsborough County man texts the wrong number asking for cocaine, and you will not believe who answered.
That is ahead on KRAK 11 News.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good morning. This is Criminal Intent.
We have three Florida Man tributes this morning, all from the same month back in twenty twenty-four.
August was a productive month for Florida.
It was a banner month. We begin with a tactical decision made during a police interview.
Back in August of twenty twenty-four, Daytona Beach police were questioning a robbery suspect when he made an unusual choice. Body camera footage shows the man jumping into the middle of the Halifax River while officers were mid-sentence.
The suspect swam approximately forty yards before being retrieved by marine patrol.
Police said he was not a strong swimmer.
Also that month, a Florida man purchased sixty-five hundred dollars worth of original artwork for exactly fifty dollars. Deputies say he achieved this by swapping the price tags at a local gallery.
Prosecutors allege he walked out with three pieces under his arm.
The gallery became suspicious when he asked for a receipt.
That is attention to detail.
Same month, a Florida man was arrested after a traffic collision when deputies discovered his driver's license had been suspended since two thousand eleven for a prior DUI.
That is thirteen years.
He told officers he thought it had been reinstated.
Authorities say he never applied for reinstatement.
That brings our total to one hundred and seventy-nine Florida Man tributes in forty-three weeks.
Three in one segment.
We are blessed with material, Deb.
In more serious news, authorities in Nevada are continuing their investigation after hundreds of cremated human remains were discovered in the desert outside Searchlight back in November of last year.
A local resident stumbled upon the remains while hiking nearly an hour south of Las Vegas. The investigation is active and ongoing.
Still ahead this morning, Animals. Deb has the latest from the countdown, and I am told there has been movement at the top.
When Kindness Goes Both Ways is still number one.
How much movement?
Seven million views in three days.
That is Animals, in a few minutes on KRAK eleven News.
ANIMALS
Time now for Animals.
The KRAK 11 animal countdown. We rank by views gained in the last three days, and we count down from three.
Three videos this morning. All of them are on the KRAK 11 News Reel, and the link is in the description.
Number three. One hundred and twenty pounds of dog, hiding from ice, behind a two-year-old. Posted by Tiny Boss Big Dog on the twentieth of August.
Two million eight hundred and eighty-seven thousand one hundred and ninety-one new views in the last three days. Up one spot since the last count.
Number two. Fisherman found this heron fighting for its life. Posted by Sassy on the twenty-first.
Six million two hundred and sixty-eight thousand three hundred and fifty-three new views in three days. Unchanged since the last count.
And number one. When kindness goes both ways. Posted by Windypaws on the twentieth of August.
Six million nine hundred and seventy-two thousand forty-one new views in the last three days. It has now led our count for thirty-two hours.
Thirty-two consecutive hours.
It is a good one.
Still ahead this morning on KRAK 11 News, a quick look at sports. Pete Crow-Armstrong extended his walk-off RBI streak again last night.
Fifty-eight consecutive games.
We will have that story when we come back.
A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS
A quick look at sports.
We have got one result tonight and it is not from a game.
From the stands.
Former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom was ejected from last night's WNBA game between the Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever after a verbal altercation with Sky guard Natasha Cloud.
Freedom, who has not played professionally since twenty twenty-two, was seated courtside when the incident occurred during the third quarter. Security escorted him out.
The Sky won that game, but the final score has not been released yet.
That is sports. Coming up at the top of the hour, the Nevada wildfire has now burned eleven thousand two hundred acres near Reno and remains completely uncontained.
We will have the latest from emergency crews on the ground. That is next on KRAK 11 News.
