KRAK 11 NEWS
Good morning. This is the top of the hour on KRAK 11 News at oh-nine-hundred hours. I am Chip Marlowe.
I am Deb Sarkissian. Coming up this morning on KRAK 11 - New Zealand moves to ban social media for anyone under sixteen. The government faces opposition from lawmakers who say it will not work.
In Criminal Intent, we revisit a Florida Man Tribute from back in February of last year. A break-in in Polk County that left the homeowner with more questions than answers, and the suspect with even fewer clothes than that.
Our one hundred and seventy-fourth tribute in forty-three weeks.
We keep count because you keep watching them. In Animals this morning, When Kindness Goes Both Ways holds the top spot on the KRAK 11 countdown for the thirtieth hour. Nearly seven million new views in three days.
And in A Quick Look at Sports, South Africa makes changes to the lineup ahead of the All Blacks rematch. Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu drops to the bench after an indifferent showing in the series opener.
Still ahead in just a few minutes on The World Desk - why lawmakers in Wellington believe a ban will drive teenagers to less safe corners of the internet, and what the bill does about that. We begin after the break.
THE WORLD DESK
Good morning. This is KRAK 11 News.
We have four continents this morning.
I counted five.
Four.
We begin with New Zealand, where the government is introducing a bill to ban social media access for anyone under the age of sixteen.
This is similar to what Australia is already doing.
New Zealand is introducing its own version. The government is facing opposition from members of parliament who believe a ban will not work in practice.
What is the enforcement mechanism?
The bill does not say yet. That is what the opposition is asking.
We turn now to Nevada, where tens of thousands of people have been ordered to evacuate as a wildfire spreads on the outskirts of Reno.
The fire has burned more than ten thousand five hundred acres and remains completely uncontained this morning. Nearly ninety thousand people are under evacuation orders.
Reno's total population is just under two hundred and seventy thousand, so that is a third of the city.
Residents say they are scared to death. The fire is moving quickly and the wind is not helping.
We will stay on that.
In Britain, the Prime Minister is calling it truly reprehensible that social media users are sharing videos of dangerous driving, and the government is urging TikTok and other platforms to remove them.
These are people driving the wrong way on motorways?
Wrong-way driving, yes. The videos are being shared widely and the government says the platforms need to act.
I assume there are laws already on the books about dangerous driving.
There are. The concern is that posting the videos encourages others to try it.
If you are watching on YouTube this morning, we would be grateful if you subscribed. A station our size notices every single one.
It costs you nothing and it means the world to us.
Deb, did you know New Zealand is in the Southern Hemisphere?
I did know that.
That means it is summer there right now.
It is winter there right now.
Southern Hemisphere.
Southern Hemisphere means the seasons are reversed, not the months.
So it is winter.
It is winter.
Still ahead this morning on KRAK 11 News, CRIMINAL INTENT. A case that took eight years to solve, and the evidence that finally broke it open.
That is next.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good morning. This is KRAK 11 News at oh-nine-hundred hours, and we are ready to do what we do best.
The Blotter.
The greatest crimes committed in the dumbest possible ways. This is our one hundred and seventy-fifth Florida Man Tribute in forty-three weeks.
Back in February of last year, a man in Polk County was arrested for breaking into someone's home. He was not wearing any clothing at the time.
Deputies arrived at the residence and found the suspect inside. He was completely unclothed. He was not a resident of the home.
The sheriff's office said he had no explanation for why he was there or why he had removed all of his clothing.
Prosecutors charged him with burglary of an occupied dwelling. He was taken into custody without incident.
Prosecutors allege.
Prosecutors allege. The homeowner was not injured. The suspect posted bond the following day.
That is our one hundred and seventy-fifth tribute. We have been running these for forty-three weeks.
Florida continues to deliver.
It does.
We are on YouTube. If you have been watching for a while and have not yet subscribed, it does help a station this size. Costs you nothing, means the world to us.
And we do read the comments. We answer them as well, when we can.
Coming up in just a few minutes: Animals. Kiwi the Capybara was weighed at London Zoo this morning.
Capybaras weigh about a hundred and forty pounds on average. They are the largest rodent in the world.
We will have that and the rest of the animal countdown in a few minutes on KRAK 11 News.
ANIMALS
Time now for Animals.
The KRAK 11 animal countdown. Three videos ranked by how many new views they gained in the last three days.
We count the growth, not the total.
And the count changed overnight.
Number three. Woman Kicks Seal Off Her Boat. Posted by guipascale. Two million eight hundred and ten thousand five hundred and thirty-four new views.
Up from two million seven hundred and ninety-eight thousand six hundred and twenty-seven when we checked this morning.

That is up two hundred and forty-seven thousand from this morning's count.
And number one. When Kindness Goes Both Ways. Posted by Windypaws. Six million eight hundred and seventy thousand nine hundred and forty new views.
That is the top of the count for thirty consecutive hours.
All three are on the KRAK 11 News Reel. The link is in the description.
If you are watching on YouTube, a subscribe costs you nothing and it helps us keep the lights on.
Coming up. A Quick Look at Sports. Pete Crow-Armstrong went fifty-seven games with a walk-off. Last night he tried for fifty-eight.
We will tell you what happened.
In just a moment.
A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS
A quick look at sports.
Results only this morning. Who played, who won, what the score was.
Let's start with rugby.
South Africa has dropped fly-half Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu to the bench for their rematch against New Zealand. He started the series opener last week but the Springboks are making changes ahead of game two.
That is a significant roster change for the All Blacks rematch.
And Pete Crow-Armstrong extended that walk-off streak to fifty-eight consecutive games last night. The Cubs beat the White Sox four to three in the bottom of the ninth.
Fifty-eight games in a row.
Still ahead this morning — the next KRAK 11 News at the top of the hour. We will have the very latest on the Nevada wildfire and evacuation orders still in effect for nearly ninety thousand people near Reno.
That is coming up in just a few minutes. Good morning, Wexler County.
