KRAK 11 NEWS
Good morning. This is KRAK 11 News at oh-seven-hundred hours. I am Chip Marlowe.
I am Deb Sarkissian. Coming up this hour: The World Desk, with nearly ninety thousand people ordered to leave as a wildfire closes in on Reno, Nevada.
Criminal Intent, with a Florida man who Sheriff Grady Judd says was, and I quote, drunker than Cooter Brown when he tried to take his kids to Disney World.
Back in March of last year.
That is our one hundred and seventy-first Florida Man Tribute. Animals, where a video about kindness has led our countdown for twenty-eight hours. And a Quick Look at Sports, where the Esports World Cup ended with seven million dollars going to a team nobody saw coming.
Seven million dollars for esports.
The prize pool for the whole tournament was sixty million.
Still ahead this morning — The World Desk, where that wildfire is completely uncontained and ten thousand five hundred acres are already gone. KRAK 11 News continues.
THE WORLD DESK
Good morning. This is KRAK 11 News.
We have four stories this morning, and three of them are about money leaving places where people need it to stay.
That is not an optimistic way to start the hour.
It is an accurate way to start the hour.
We begin this morning with breaking news from Washington, where the U.S. Treasury Secretary has announced what he is calling the greatest financial offensive ever imposed on Iran.
Scott Bessent says the United States will sever all economic ties with Iran, and that any nation partnering with Iran financially will also be isolated from U.S. markets.
That is unprecedented reach. The Treasury is going after third-party trade.
It is. Bessent made the announcement this morning in Washington and said enforcement would begin immediately.
In Zambia this morning, access to the country's courts has been blocked as the deadline looms for election petitions challenging President Hakainde Hichilema's recent re-election.
Opposition parties say security forces have prevented lawyers and petitioners from entering court buildings in the capital, Lusaka, while preparations for Hichilema's second inauguration appear to be continuing.
That is the southern coast of Africa.
South-central. Landlocked. It borders Congo to the north.
I was close.
You were on the continent.
Completely uncontested fact.
Business owners in both Canada and the United States are reporting deep uncertainty this morning as the trade war between the two countries continues to escalate.
One manufacturing executive in Ontario told reporters this morning, quote, half my business will be gone, as both governments impose tit-for-tat import taxes on goods crossing the border.
The longest undefended border in the world, and right now it is costing people their livelihoods on both sides.
Thirty-nine hundred miles of it. Businesses that have operated across that border for decades are now navigating tariffs they say make cross-border trade unworkable.
And closer to home for a lot of young people watching this morning, graduate job vacancies in the United Kingdom have dropped by almost fifty percent in the last year.
The job site Adzuna says the number of graduate vacancies is now the lowest it has been since twenty sixteen, which is going to hit a lot of families hard.
It will. That is four years of university and a very different job market waiting at the end of it than the one students were promised when they started.
Deb, the U.K. has been tightening entry-level hiring across the board. Is this part of that, or is this something separate?
Both. The broader slowdown is hitting graduate recruitment especially hard because those are discretionary hires. When budgets tighten, training programs and junior roles are the first to go.
That is not good news for anyone finishing school this spring.
It is not.
If you are watching this on YouTube and you have not yet subscribed, we would be grateful if you did. A station our size notices every one.
And if you have thoughts on anything we have covered this morning, leave a comment. We read them, and we answer them.
All right. Still ahead this morning on KRAK 11 News, a story out of Escambia County that involves a man, a bicycle, and a remarkably poor understanding of property law.
Criminal Intent is next.
This is KRAK 11 News.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good morning. This is KRAK 11 News, and this is the Blotter.
We have tribute number one seventy-two this morning, from the Florida Man Archive.
Forty-three weeks. One seventy-two tributes. Florida remains undefeated.
What have you found for us this morning?
This is from Polk County, back in March of last year. A man was arrested for driving under the influence while taking children to Disney World.
Sheriff Grady Judd described the suspect as quote, drunker than Cooter Brown.
The suspect had prior DUI convictions on his record. Police allege he was behind the wheel with multiple children in the vehicle, heading to the Magic Kingdom.
Sheriff Judd told reporters the man's blood alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit.
The children were unharmed and turned over to family members. The suspect was taken into custody without incident.
That is tribute number one seventy-two.
Do you remember where you were when you first heard the phrase drunker than Cooter Brown?
I was at this desk, Chip, approximately ninety seconds ago.
Sheriff Judd has a gift for the phrase.
He does. And if you are watching us on YouTube this morning, a subscription costs nothing and it helps a station this size stay on the air.
We are glad you are here.
Still ahead this morning on KRAK 11 News: Animals. When Kindness Goes Both Ways has now led the countdown for twenty-eight hours.
Six million seven hundred and thirty-one thousand new views in three days.
We will have the full top five in a few minutes.
ANIMALS
Time now for Animals.
The KRAK 11 countdown, which ranks by how many views a video has gained in the last three days, not its total.
Three videos this morning. We count them down.
Number three is Woman Kicks Seal Off Her Boat, posted by guipascale. Two million seven hundred and eighty-seven thousand nine hundred and fifty-two new views in three days.
That is number three on our chart. YouTube's own trending chart has it at sixteen.
Number two is Fisherman Found This Heron Fighting For Its Life, posted by Sassy. Five million two hundred and forty-nine thousand four hundred and eight new views.
Unchanged since the last count.
Number one is When Kindness Goes Both Ways. Posted by Windypaws. Six million seven hundred and eighty-four thousand one hundred and seventy-eight new views in three days.
It has led our count for twenty-eight hours.
All three are on the KRAK 11 News Reel. The link is in the description.
If you have been watching for a while and you have not yet subscribed, we would be grateful if you would. A station this size notices.
We would.
Still ahead this morning, A Quick Look at Sports. Pete Crow-Armstrong's walk-off streak is now the longest in modern baseball history, and we will tell you what he said about it.
Stay with us.
A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS
A Quick Look at Sports.
Good morning. We have got results from Paris, the Cubs extended their streak again, and Ohio State is in the preseason top five.
Fifty-seven games now.
The Esports World Cup wrapped up in Paris overnight. China-based team AG.AL took the overall championship and seven million dollars in prize money out of a total pool of sixty million.
Pete Crow-Armstrong extended his walk-off RBI streak to fifty-seven consecutive games last night. The Cubs beat the Cardinals six to five in the bottom of the ninth.
Fifty-seven games. That is remarkable.
Coming up at the top of the hour on KRAK 11 News — a story out of Zambia where security forces have blocked court access just as the election petition deadline arrives. We will have the details.
