THE WORLD DESK
Good morning. This is KRAK 11 News at oh-three-hundred hours. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. The world desk this morning, and we have food safety concerns out of China, a piece of football history changing hands in London, and a significant update on that Hong Kong stock listing.
I have been thinking about that Maradona ball all night.
Have you.
We begin this morning with a food safety investigation out of China. Regulators there are investigating reports that formaldehyde is being used to preserve cabbages during transport and storage.
The use of formaldehyde to preserve food is prohibited in China. The chemical is classified as a carcinogen. Inspectors are examining produce markets in several provinces.
China is the world's leading exporter of preserved vegetables.
China is the world's leading producer of cabbages.
That is what I said.
You said exporter.
Producer, exporter. They grow it, they ship it.
Most of what they grow stays in China, Chip. The country consumes more cabbage domestically than the rest of the world combined.
Well, they are investigating it now.
From the world of sport, the football Diego Maradona used to score his famous Hand of God goal has sold at auction in London. The ball sold for two and a half million pounds.
The goal was scored during the nineteen eighty-six World Cup quarter-final between Argentina and England. Maradona punched the ball into the net with his hand. The referee did not see it.
That was in Mexico City.
It was.
Argentina won two to one. Maradona later called it the hand of God. Argentina went on to win the tournament.
They did. The ball remained in the possession of the referee for nearly forty years before coming to auction.
Two and a half million pounds for a football somebody cheated with.
It is a piece of history, Chip.
It is a piece of England losing.
We have an update on Shein. The fast-fashion company has now confirmed September first as the date its shares will begin trading in Hong Kong. That is one week from this morning.
Shein is targeting a valuation of twenty-seven billion dollars. That is down from an original target of forty billion. The company adjusted its expectations following market conditions and investor feedback.
That is a significant reduction.
It is. Shares will be priced at the lower end of the range initially disclosed to investors. The company says demand remains strong despite the revision.
If you are watching on YouTube this morning, we would be grateful if you subscribed. It costs you nothing and it makes a genuine difference to a station this size.
From Britain this morning, CrossCountry rail says it is running a full service after weekend disruptions caused by a power outage and crew shortages. The company ran a limited schedule on Saturday and Sunday.
Passengers faced significant delays. Some reported waits of several hours. CrossCountry says all routes are operating normally this morning and apologized to customers affected by the disruptions.
Several hours is a long time to stand on a platform.
It is.
Still ahead this morning, Criminal Intent. We have an update on a case that has been years in the making, and the verdict came down late Sunday night.
That is Criminal Intent, in just a few minutes on KRAK 11 News.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good morning, Wexler County. Time now for the KRAK 11 Blotter.
We have four Florida Man Tributes for you this morning.
Four very good ones.
You say that every time.
We begin with this: back in February of this year, a police department in Georgia issued an urgent reminder to parents. Double-check your child's lunchbox.
What happened?
A parent in South Fulton packed what they believed was apple juice. It was not apple juice. It was a premixed cocktail. Twelve percent alcohol by volume.
That is a strong cocktail for a Tuesday morning.
The school caught it before the child opened the container. The department posted a reminder on social media: read the label, check the cap, make sure it is what you think it is.
Good advice.
Also back in February, an Amazon delivery driver in England followed GPS directions onto a historic walking path in the Thames Estuary. The path crosses a mudflat. The mudflat is tidal.
How far did the van get?
Far enough that the coastguard had to extract the vehicle at low tide. The driver was not injured. The packages were delivered late.
That is dedication to the route.
Back in April, a couple eloping in the Mojave Desert experienced what the groom later described as an interruption. They were exchanging vows when a rockslide came down the cliff behind them.
Were they hurt?
No. The rocks landed about fifteen feet behind them. The officiant kept going. The couple finished the ceremony. They have video.
That is a wedding story.
And finally: back in January of this year, astronomers confirmed that the 3I slash Atlas comet is not an alien spaceship. They searched for radio signals as low as one hundred milliwatts, which is about as strong as a cellphone. They found nothing.
Why did they think it might be?
Because President Trump ordered the release of alien and UFO files back in February, and everybody got excited. The scientists checked. It is a comet.
That is our one hundred and sixty-seventh Florida Man Tribute in forty-three weeks.
Still ahead this morning on KRAK 11 News: When Kindness Goes Both Ways has now led the animal countdown for twenty-four hours straight, and the gap is widening. We will have the numbers when Animals airs in just a few minutes.

A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS
A Quick Look at Sports.

McIlroy made the run but Clark held steady when it mattered.
And Pete Crow-Armstrong extends his walk-off RBI streak to fifty-four consecutive games tonight in the Cubs' win over the White Sox.
Fifty-four games. We are still counting.
