KRAK 11 NEWS
Good evening. This is KRAK 11 News at twenty-one hundred hours. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. Coming up this hour: The World Desk, where a man arrested travelling to France is now facing murder charges after a London fire killed one person and injured eight.
Criminal Intent looks at the slang words Texans are searching for most in twenty twenty-six, and what that tells us about who is speaking what language where.
Animals brings you the video that has now led our countdown for eighteen straight hours and gained more than six million views in four days.
And A Quick Look at Sports, where Wladimir Klitschko speaks publicly for the first time since the death of his former partner, actress Hayden Panettiere.
That one is not quick.
It is not. Still ahead tonight: The World Desk begins with breaking details from London, where police have a suspect in custody and eight victims still hospitalized. That is next on KRAK 11 News.
THE WORLD DESK
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. The wire copy tonight is all over the place.
It is a big world.
It is. And we cover it from Fairmont.
We begin tonight with a remarkable story from Australia, where a woman attacked by a shark two months ago says she is grateful to be alive.
Leah Stewart was mauled in June while swimming off the coast, suffering multiple bites to her arms and legs. She has completed the first round of surgeries and spoke publicly this week about what she calls her second chance at life.
This happened near Sydney.
It happened near Perth, on the western coast. Witnesses pulled her from the water and applied tourniquets to both legs while they waited for emergency services.
That is quick thinking by people who were there.
It is. Doctors say those tourniquets may have saved her life. She is expected to make a full recovery.
From the forecast desk now, rain is returning to much of the United Kingdom this week after what has been an exceptionally dry summer across England and Wales.
The Met Office is calling for steady rainfall beginning Tuesday, with a chance of thunderstorms in some areas and localized flooding in low-lying regions.
They have had a lot of drought over there.
Parts of southern England have seen less than thirty percent of normal rainfall since June. Agricultural officials are describing this as much-needed relief.
Will it help the farms?
It should. Wheat and barley yields have been down significantly this season. The forecast calls for rain through the end of the week, which should begin to restore soil moisture levels.
From Canada, those retaliatory tariffs we mentioned earlier tonight took effect at midnight Eastern time, targeting American steel, aluminum, and agricultural products.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said this afternoon that the tariffs were imposed reluctantly, and he accused the United States of starting a trade war.
President Trump responded by saying Canada wants the benefits of being a U.S. state without the responsibilities.
He did say that. It is not clear what he meant by it. The two governments have not announced further talks.
Do we import a lot from Canada?
Canada is the largest trading partner of the United States. We import oil, natural gas, lumber, vehicles, and agricultural products. The tariffs affect roughly eighteen billion dollars in annual trade.
That is a large number.
It is. American manufacturers are already reporting delays at the border as customs agents process the new paperwork.

And we do read the comments.
We answer them too. Deb answers the polite ones.
I answer the ones that ask actual questions.
I answer at four in the morning.
You do. And we appreciate it.
Still ahead tonight on KRAK 11 News, a case out of Wexler County that has taken an unexpected turn. We will have the details when Criminal Intent continues.
That is coming up in just a few minutes.
Stay with us.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. Welcome to the KRAK 11 Blotter.
We have a story tonight from Georgia that required me to read it three times to confirm it was real.
I read it four times.
Back in May of this year, the Cohutta City Council voted to terminate the town's entire police department. Every officer. Every badge. The whole force, gone in a single vote.
The council voted Friday afternoon. No charges. No scandal. Just terminated.
And then the very same council, the very same day, voted to immediately reinstate every single officer and give them all their jobs back. This is our one hundred and fifty-fourth Florida Man Tribute in forty-three weeks.
The council has not commented publicly on the reasoning behind either vote.
In Arkansas, a high school football player made an unsettling discovery during practice when he reached for his helmet and found a venomous copperhead snake coiled inside.
Officials believe the snake entered the helmet while it was on the ground between drills. The player was not injured and the snake was safely removed.
The copperhead was later released into a wooded area away from the practice field. Coaches have reminded players to check their equipment before use.
In New Jersey, a Pennsylvania family searching for seashells at Sea Isle City discovered what authorities are describing as a significant prehistoric artifact on the beach.
The family has turned the artifact over to local officials for study. The nature of the discovery has not been publicly disclosed.
And a study released this week finds that the most-searched slang term in Texas in twenty twenty-six is one that many adults have never heard of.
The study tracked search engine queries for slang definitions across the state. Researchers say the gap between generations has never been wider.
I looked up the top term.
And?
I am not saying it on the air.
Still ahead tonight on KRAK 11, Animals. We have a story from the Jersey Shore that has nothing to do with slang and everything to do with patience.
That is next.
ANIMALS
Time now for Animals.
The KRAK 11 animal countdown. Three videos ranked by how many views they have gained in the last four days.
Not their total. The growth.
That is correct.
At number three - a video called Check For Context, posted by Benji Void on the sixteenth of August. Two million eight hundred and fifty-eight thousand new views in the last four days.
At number two - Fisherman Found This Heron Fighting For Its Life, posted by Sassy on the twenty-first. Three million eight hundred and eighty-five thousand new views in four days.
And at number one - unchanged for eighteen hours now - When Kindness Goes Both Ways, posted by Windypaws on the twentieth of August.
Six million three hundred and forty-nine thousand new views in the last four days. It has led our count since yesterday morning.
You watched it.
I did.
All three are on the KRAK 11 News Reel, and the link is in the description.

Still ahead tonight - the Brewers extended their franchise record to sixty-three straight wins with a ten to two victory over the Reds.
And Pete Crow-Armstrong hit his fifty-first consecutive walk-off RBI for the Cubs. A Quick Look at Sports is coming up next on KRAK 11 News.
A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS
A quick look at sports.
Records are falling tonight, Deb.
Two of them within an hour.
Pete Crow-Armstrong has hit walk-off RBIs in fifty consecutive games for the Cubs. That is a major league record, and he extended it tonight. Cubs beat the White Sox five to four.
The Brewers beat the Reds nine to two, extending their franchise record to sixty-two straight wins. That number may never be touched.
And Magnus Carlsen defended his chess title at the Esports World Cup today. The Norwegian grandmaster won three games to one in the final, keeping the crown he won last year.
Coming up at the top of the hour on KRAK 11 News — we go back to breaking news, and there is a great deal of it. That is next.
Thank you for watching.
