KRAK 11 NEWS
Good evening. This is KRAK 11 News at nineteen hundred hours. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. We have four segments for you this hour. The World Desk has a suspect in custody after a fire in London left one dead and eight injured. Criminal Intent brings you our one hundred and fiftieth Florida Man Tribute.
One hundred and fiftieth.
Animals has the video that has now led our countdown for sixteen hours straight. And Sports looks at why India's prime minister is making reels for young voters.
Still ahead tonight on The World Desk — a police chase in Los Angeles County where the suspect stopped mid-pursuit to do something we have never seen before. That story in just a few minutes.
We begin with the news.
THE WORLD DESK
Good evening, Wexler County. This is KRAK 11 News.
We have breaking developments from Guinea tonight, and Canadian tariffs take effect in less than five hours.
Midnight tonight. That is a hard deadline.
It is. We will start there in a moment. First, the rescue effort in West Africa.
From Guinea, rescue crews are working through the night following this morning's landfill collapse. The death toll now stands at thirty.
Officials say the waste mound gave way without warning, burying several homes in the capital city of Conakry. Search teams are using heavy equipment and working by floodlight.
That is on the coast in the western part of the country.
Conakry is on a peninsula in the southwest of Guinea. The city sits on the Atlantic coast. The landfill was the primary waste disposal site for the capital.
Do we know how long that site had been operating?
The government has not released that information. What we know is that homes had been built very close to the perimeter and that the collapse happened just after dawn local time.
Thirty confirmed dead and crews still searching tonight.
An update now on U.S.-Canada trade. Canadian retaliatory tariffs take effect at midnight tonight, targeting American steel, aluminum, and agricultural products.
That is less than five hours from now.
It is. Prime Minister Mark Carney said this afternoon he was reluctantly imposing the measures and that the United States had started a trade war. Those are his words.
President Trump responded today by saying Canada wants the economic benefits of being a U.S. state without the commitment.
Trade talks collapsed over the weekend with no further meetings scheduled. The tariffs will remain in place until Washington agrees to resume negotiations.
So midnight tonight, and no talks on the calendar.
That is correct.
From Vietnam now, where investigators are still working to understand the circumstances around the death of a teenage girl who was struck by a vehicle two weeks ago.
Do Ngoc Phuong Thuy was nineteen. She died after being run over in what police initially described as a traffic accident. Then came a stunning admission from her family.
What did they say?
Her relatives confirmed publicly that the circumstances were not what they first appeared. Authorities have not released further details, but local reports suggest the case may involve more than one person.
And that is in Hanoi?
Ho Chi Minh City, in the south. The investigation is ongoing and police say they expect to make an announcement within the week.
So more questions than answers at this point.
That is exactly right.
And from London, a brief update on the Hounslow fire. The thirty-four-year-old man arrested yesterday remains in custody tonight on suspicion of murder.
Police say he was arrested while trying to board a ferry to France. One person died in the fire and eight others were injured. Investigators have not yet determined the cause.
We will stay on that as well.
If you are watching on YouTube this evening, a subscription helps a small station in ways that genuinely matter. We are glad you turned up.
It costs you nothing and it means a great deal to us.
Still ahead tonight, CRIMINAL INTENT. A cold case from Wexler County that investigators say may finally have a break.
That is next on KRAK 11 News.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good evening. This is Criminal Intent, the KRAK 11 Blotter.
We have four stories tonight. Three of them are from our Florida Man Tribute archive, and one of them required a bomb squad.
The bomb squad story is not from Florida.
It is from the nation's capital.
Wednesday morning, firefighters behind a Washington D.C. firehouse discovered what appeared to be a suspicious electronic device with exposed wiring.
Protocol was followed. The area was cordoned off. A full perimeter was established. The bomb squad was called in.
Police later determined the device was a portable electronic sex pump.
Officers canvassed the immediate vicinity for persons of interest. The device has been removed. No charges have been filed.
Back in July of this year, a police chase suspect led a dramatic half-hour pursuit across Los Angeles County before being taken into custody.
The suspect stopped during the pursuit, pulled into a gas station, and filled a full tank before continuing to flee from officers.
Aerial units maintained visual contact throughout. The suspect was eventually boxed in by multiple units and taken into custody without further incident.
Prosecutors allege he paid for the gas with a credit card.
Also back in April of this year, multiple black bear sightings were reported in West Vincent Township, prompting police to issue safety advisories to residents in the area.
Officers responded to calls of a bear rummaging through residential trash cans. Residents were advised to secure food waste and maintain distance if the animal is spotted.
In April of this year, the family of a Michigan woman who disappeared during a trip to the Bahamas called for a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding her disappearance.
The fifty-five-year-old woman was reported missing at sea. Her daughter said the circumstances of the disappearance warrant further scrutiny from authorities.
That is one hundred and fifty-one Florida Man Tributes in forty-three weeks. Deb?

Six million one hundred ninety-seven thousand views in four days.
We will have the full count when Animals comes up in a few minutes.
Right here on KRAK 11.

Still ahead tonight: a quick look at sports, and the Brewers have now won sixty consecutive games.
That is a franchise record that keeps getting longer. We will have that coming up on KRAK 11 News.
A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS
A quick look at sports.
We have got a sixty-one game winning streak, a walk-off record that may never be broken, and Lando Norris winning races he says he should not be winning.
You love a streak.
I do. The Brewers beat the Reds eight to one tonight, extending their franchise record winning streak to sixty-one straight games.
Pete Crow-Armstrong hit his forty-ninth consecutive walk-off RBI as the Cubs beat the White Sox four to three in the South Side series.
Forty-nine straight games with a walk-off RBI. I do not think that record gets broken in our lifetime.
Ohio State is ranked fourth in Yahoo Sports' preseason college football poll as the Buckeyes prepare for both Michigan and the playoff.
And Lando Norris won the Dutch Grand Prix for his second consecutive victory this season, though he says he still does not have the car to fight for a championship.
Coming up at the top of the hour - we have the latest from Conakry as rescue crews work through the night at the Guinea landfill site.
