Rundown
KRAK 11 NEWS
Good afternoon. It is the top of the hour here on KRAK 11 News. I am Chip Marlowe.
I am Deb Sarkissian. Here is what is coming up this hour on KRAK 11 News.
The World Desk. France confirms more than three hundred drowning deaths this summer, and officials say heatwaves are driving people to take risks they would not normally take.
Criminal Intent. A Florida Man Tribute from September of twenty twenty-four. A substitute teacher in Riverview, arrested for conduct in a classroom that we will describe very carefully.
One hundred and forty-two tributes in forty-three weeks.
Animals. When Kindness Goes Both Ways holds the top spot on the KRAK 11 animal countdown for an eleventh straight hour, and five point nine million people have watched it in four days.
A Quick Look at Sports. Musicians in Austin are getting help paying for health insurance, and the program is spreading beyond Texas.
That is sports?
It is what we have. Still ahead this afternoon, The World Desk. Three hundred and one deaths since mid-June, and French officials are saying people underestimated how dangerous the water was. We will have that in just a moment.
THE WORLD DESK
Good afternoon, Wexler County. You are watching KRAK 11 News.
We have four continents this hour.
I counted five.
We begin in France, where the drowning death toll has now reached three hundred and one since the nineteenth of June. The government says heatwaves across southern Europe are driving people to take risks in the water.
That is every beach from Barcelona to Monaco.
The French Riviera, which is a portion of that coastline, yes.
Three hundred and one confirmed deaths in eight weeks.
Authorities say many of the victims entered the water during peak heat hours when the temperature difference was most dangerous. France recorded its hottest July on record this year.
In Britain, CrossCountry rail is still shut down. The disruption is now in its twelfth hour, and the company says it has no timeline for restoring service.
That is virtually every train in the country.
CrossCountry, which is one operator. They run intercity service between Scotland and the south coast.
How many trains is that?
The company operates about three hundred trains a day. None of them are running. A power failure took out the entire network overnight, and engineers are still working on it.
From Ukraine, there is still no response from President Zelensky's office following the BBC interview we told you about earlier.
Mykhailo Fedorov, who was dismissed as defence minister, said in that interview that the president should be asked what he knew about corruption allegations within the government.
Fedorov also called for elections to be held in Ukraine during wartime, which would require changing the country's constitution. Zelensky's office has not commented as of seven this morning Eastern time.
In Washington, President Trump took a ceremonial lap around the IndyCar track before waving the green flag to start yesterday's race. The event was the final celebration in a summer marking the country's two hundred and fiftieth birthday.
That is a fast track.
It is. The temporary street circuit ran through downtown Washington at speeds approaching two hundred miles per hour.
Right past the Capitol building.
Within sight of it, yes. The race drew an estimated four hundred thousand spectators over the weekend.
And in Britain, the government has announced that mayors will now be able to overrule local councils on major housing developments.
Housing minister Matthew Pennycook said the change is essential for helping mayors deliver new homes in areas where local opposition has blocked construction.
So if a town council votes no, the mayor can vote yes.
On major projects, yes. The government says Britain needs to build one point five million new homes over the next five years.
That is the news from overseas this afternoon. Deb, you have been doing this longer than I have.
By three weeks.
But you still get the pronunciation right every single time.
I look it up.
If you are watching on YouTube, a subscription costs you nothing and it helps a station this size keep doing this work. We are glad you are here.
Still ahead this afternoon on KRAK 11 News, CRIMINAL INTENT. A courtroom decision that took two years to reach and fifteen seconds to deliver.
That is next.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good afternoon. This is KRAK 11 News at fourteen hundred hours.
The blotter today includes a city council meeting that took an unusual turn.
Also a fish that has been hiding in plain sight for what scientists believe is thousands of years.
And two Florida Man Tributes from our archive.
We begin with breaking developments out of San Diego, where a man dressed as Darth Vader addressed the city council on surveillance technology.
The individual, in full costume, spoke during public comment about the city's decision to acquire Flock security cameras.
The helmet stayed on for the duration of his remarks.
The council voted to proceed with the camera system.
Back in July of this year, researchers discovered a new species of blind cavefish in Alabama, tucked away in one of the state's most studied cave systems.
Scientists are calling it a demon cavefish.
Researchers say the fish has been hiding there for thousands of years.
Hiding extremely well.
Back in September of twenty twenty-four, a substitute teacher in Riverview was arrested after authorities say he masturbated in a classroom during lunch break in front of students.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office filed charges that fall.
Back in July of twenty twenty-four, federal prosecutors indicted a Florida man accused of posing as a financial advisor and defrauding investors of millions of dollars.
The Justice Department alleges he targeted people wishing to sell their advisory businesses.
Prosecutors allege he portrayed himself as legitimate in order to gain their trust.
That is one hundred and forty-three Florida Man Tributes in forty-three weeks.
Still ahead this afternoon, one video has led our animal countdown for eleven hours and gained five point nine million views in four days.
That story is next in Animals.
KRAK 11 News continues.

Three videos this hour, counted down from three to one. All three ranked by how many new views they have gained, not their total.
The same video has been at number one for eleven hours now.

If you are watching this afternoon on YouTube, we read the comments. We answer them as well, and we are glad you are here.
Coming up in a few minutes, A Quick Look at Sports. The Brewers have now won fifty-six consecutive games. Pete Crow-Armstrong has hit walk-off RBIs in forty-four straight for the Cubs. Both streaks are still going.
Stay with us.
A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS
A quick look at sports, and the Brewers are now fifty-seven and oh.
Fifty-seven consecutive wins.
That is a franchise record that was already the longest winning streak in baseball history, and they are still going.
They beat the Cardinals last night four to one.
Pete Crow-Armstrong hit his forty-fifth consecutive walk-off RBI for the Cubs, who beat the White Sox four to two.
Forty-five straight games with a walk-off RBI. That is a major league record that gets longer every night.
Magnus Carlsen successfully defended his chess title at the twenty twenty-six Esports World Cup. Yahoo Sports' preseason college football top twenty-five has Ohio State ranked number four.
