Rundown
KRAK 11 NEWS
Good morning. I am Chip Marlowe.
And I am Deb Sarkissian. Welcome to the top of the hour on KRAK 11 News.
This hour: the World Desk, where a power outage has left train services cancelled across the United Kingdom for eleven hours. Criminal Intent brings you our hundred and thirty-fourth Florida Man tribute. Animals has a video that has led our countdown for eight straight hours.
And a quick look at Sports, where Tropical Storm Moke is bringing more than a foot of rain to Hawaii.
That last one is sports?
It is this morning.
Still ahead this hour on the World Desk: nearly every CrossCountry rail service in the UK has been cancelled since midnight, and passengers are being told not to travel. That is coming up in a few minutes on KRAK 11 News.
We start at the top of the hour.
THE WORLD DESK
This is THE WORLD DESK.
Good morning. We have four items from overseas and one of them involves robot boxing, which Chip has now watched twelve times.
The footwork is extraordinary.
We will get to the footwork. First, the United Kingdom.
CrossCountry rail services remain suspended this morning following a power outage at the company's control centre in Birmingham. The disruption is now in its eleventh hour.
Nearly all services across the network have been cancelled, affecting routes from Scotland to the southwest of England. The company has not given passengers a timeline for when normal operations will resume.
That is the entire island.
Most of the main north-south routes through the Midlands, yes.
How long does it take to restore power to a building in Birmingham?
They are working to restore it. They have been working to restore it for eleven hours.
Eleven hours.
In Beijing, the second World Humanoid Games wrapped up its opening weekend with robot boxing, football, and sprint competitions. The five-day competition continues through Wednesday Beijing time.
The events are designed to test humanoid robots in athletic movements and coordination, and the boxing matches in particular have drawn a great deal of attention online.
I have now watched the boxing video twelve times.
You counted.
The footwork is remarkable. They shift weight like actual middleweights. The one in the red corner throws a jab that would make Gordo proud.
I saw it. Very clean.
Thank you, Gordo.
They are programmed to mimic human boxing technique, and apparently they are getting quite good at it.
Mykhailo Fedorov, who was dismissed as Ukraine's defence minister last month, has told the BBC that President Zelensky should be asked what he knew about corruption allegations within the government.
Fedorov has also renewed his call for wartime elections to be held in Ukraine, a position that puts him at odds with the current government's stance that elections cannot be conducted while the country is under martial law.
This is the same minister we reported on earlier this morning.
It is. The BBC interview aired overnight and contains new material about what Fedorov says the president knew and when he knew it.
Has Zelensky's office responded?
Not as of seven this morning Eastern time. We will update you if that changes.
And content creator company Good Good has apologized and removed an advertisement that showed a woman being pushed to the ground as she reached for a man's golf club.
The company posted the apology on social media Sunday and said the content did not meet their standards.
That one should not have made it past anybody in the room.
No, it should not have.
If you are watching on YouTube this morning, we would be grateful if you subscribed. It costs you nothing and it helps keep this station running.
We would be very grateful.
Still ahead this morning on KRAK 11 News, CRIMINAL INTENT. A Wexler County man is in custody after what deputies are calling a very unusual theft from a storage facility on Route Forty-One.
We will tell you what he took and why the sheriff says it took three trucks to move it.
That is coming up in just a few minutes.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good morning. It is the top of the hour here on KRAK 11 News, and that means it is time for the Blotter.
This morning we have four Florida Man tributes. We are at one hundred and thirty-eight.
That is four stories from the archives, all of them strange, and none of them from this week.
We lead on the crime dog.
Back in June of last year, police in Duncanville, Alabama released surveillance images showing a person dressed as Scooby-Doo breaking into a convenience store in the middle of the night.
The suspect bypassed the snacks entirely.
He went straight for the register. No Scooby Snacks, no sandwich fixings, nothing. Just the cash drawer.
Police said the costume was complete. Full body suit, collar, the works.
The investigation is ongoing. No arrests have been made.
Back in August of last year, a North Texas high school student made his homecoming date a mum constructed entirely out of Lego bricks.
That is commitment to a theme.
The mum included all the traditional ribbons and trinkets, but every piece was built from Lego. It took him three weeks.
Back in July of last year, Robert F. Kennedy Junior hiked Camelback Mountain in Phoenix, and it was his choice of hiking attire that sparked online discussion.
He was wearing jeans, boots, and a dress shirt. In Phoenix. In July.
The temperature that day was one hundred and twelve degrees.
Back in August of last year, comedian Matt Rife purchased the Connecticut home and museum of paranormal researchers Ed and Lorraine Warren.
The Warrens are associated with The Conjuring film franchise. Their museum houses the Annabelle doll.
The doll comes with the house.
That brings KRAK 11 to one hundred and thirty-eight Florida Man tributes in forty-three weeks.
Still ahead this morning, Animals. We have a countdown update and a story about a cat that saved a family from a house fire in Ohio.
That is next on KRAK 11 News.
ANIMALS
Time now for the Good News Desk.
This is the KRAK 11 animal countdown. Three videos that gained the most views in the last four days.
We count down from three.
Starting at number three.
At number three: Fisherman Found This Heron Fighting For Its Life. Posted by Sassy on the twenty-first of August. Two point four million views gained in four days.
That is at number six on YouTube's own trending chart.
Number two: a video posted by Benji Void on the sixteenth of August. Two point seven million views gained in the last four days.
YouTube has it at number fifteen on their trending chart. It is holding at number two on ours.
And number one for the eighth straight hour: When Kindness Goes Both Ways.
Posted by Windypaws on the twentieth of August. Five point six million views gained in four days.
YouTube has it at number one as well. Seven point two million total views.
That is a lot of people being reminded of something good.
All three of those are on the KRAK 11 News Reel. The link is in the description.
Coming up this morning: Pete Crow-Armstrong has now done something forty-two games in a row that nobody in the major leagues has ever done twice. A Quick Look at Sports is next.
Stay with us.
A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS
A quick look at sports.
We have a very good night in baseball.
We do.
The Milwaukee Brewers have now won fifty-five straight games, extending their franchise record. They beat the Cardinals four to one.
Pete Crow-Armstrong extended his own major league record with walk-off RBIs in forty-three consecutive games. The Cubs beat the White Sox four to two.
Magnus Carlsen defended his chess title at the Esports World Cup for the ninth straight year, beating Fabiano Caruana four and a half to three and a half.
That is nine years in a row.
The greatest of all time.
Coming up at the top of the hour — Tropical Storm Moke is heading for Hawaii with more than a foot of rain expected across the Big Island.
The next KRAK 11 News, at the top of the hour. We will see you then.
