Rundown
KRAK 11 NEWS
Good morning. This is KRAK 11 News, Fairmont. It's eight o'clock and we have the hour for you.
We start at The World Desk with dozens of coordinated arson attacks in southern Thailand overnight. No one has claimed responsibility.
Then Criminal Intent. A Florida man was denied entry to a USAA building back in December of twenty twenty-four, so he put on a helmet and drove his car straight through the front doors.
That is our one hundred and twenty-eighth Florida Man Tribute.
Animals has When Kindness Goes Both Ways, which has now led our countdown for five hours and gained five point three million views in four days.
And A Quick Look at Sports. A Texas judge has denied a retrial request in the murder of a seventeen-year-old high school athlete.
The World Desk is next with those arson attacks in Thailand. The military says they were designed to create unrest. We'll have that in just a moment.
THE WORLD DESK
Good morning. You are watching KRAK 11 News. I am Chip Marlowe.
And I am Deb Sarkissian. We have updates this morning on the humanoid games in Beijing, where the competition has moved into its second day.
I have now watched the boxing video ten times.
Ten times.
It is remarkable. The footwork is very good.
You watched it during the boxing story last hour.
I was comparing technique.
The boxing finals wrapped up overnight. Football and sprinting competitions are underway this morning Beijing time, with teams from fourteen countries competing through Wednesday.
The sprinting is later today their time.
This afternoon in Beijing. The games run through Wednesday with five events total.
In Britain, the CrossCountry rail disruption is now in its ninth hour. The company says service may not resume until late this afternoon.
A power cut in the Midlands disabled CrossCountry's operations center early this morning, and the company has canceled virtually all services across England, Wales and Scotland.
That is the intercity service.
It is. CrossCountry runs long-distance routes between major cities. Customers this morning are calling it the worst case scenario for holiday weekend travel.
That is a long outage for a power cut.
It is. The company says backup systems also failed, and they are manually restoring service region by region.
In Ukraine, former defence minister Oleksii Reznikov has told the BBC that President Zelensky has questions to answer about corruption allegations within his government.
Reznikov was dismissed from his post last month. In an interview published this morning, he also called for elections to be held in Ukraine, saying the country needs renewed democratic legitimacy.
Zelensky has suspended elections during the war.
That is correct. Ukraine's constitution allows for that suspension during martial law, which has been in effect since the Russian invasion began three years ago.
How long was Reznikov defence minister?
Two years. He served from the start of the invasion until last month. His dismissal came amid allegations of procurement irregularities, which he has denied.
U.S.-Canada trade tensions are now in their fifth day. President Trump said this morning that Canada wants the economic benefits of being a U.S. state without actually joining the Union.
Canada's Prime Minister announced retaliatory tariffs late Sunday evening after weekend talks collapsed. He accused the United States of starting a trade war.
Trump has been saying this for weeks.
He has. What is new this morning is the Canadian response. The tariffs take effect Friday and target U.S. steel, aluminum, and agricultural products.
This is the dairy dispute.
Dairy is part of it. The larger issue is tariffs on Canadian softwood lumber and steel that the U.S. imposed two weeks ago, which Canada says violate the trade agreement all three countries signed in twenty-twenty.
Mexico is also part of that agreement.
Correct. Mexico has not announced a response yet, but their trade minister is meeting with U.S. officials in Washington tomorrow.

Coming up in just a few minutes, Criminal Intent. A story out of Louisiana involving drones, plastic crows, and a prison delivery system that did not go as planned.
We will be right back.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good morning. This is the KRAK 11 Blotter.
We have four tributes this morning. Three of them involve choices that seemed better at the time.
And one involves a sword.
The sword is not the crime.
In Ohio, back in July of last year, a young boy crawled headfirst through the prize chute of a claw machine and became lodged among the stuffed animals inside the glass enclosure.
Police say the child was freed unharmed. His pride, they noted, was bruised.
Surveillance cameras captured the incident. The approach was headfirst. The exit was assisted.
I respect the commitment.
In Tampa, Florida, back in December 2024, a man denied entry to a USAA building put on a helmet, got into his car, and drove it directly into the facility.
Tampa Police say the man was determined not to let anything stop him from gaining access. The helmet, they noted, did not appear to be part of a larger safety plan.
Police say the man was arrested at the scene.
That brings our Florida Man Tribute count to one hundred and twenty-nine in forty-three weeks.
In New Jersey, back in June of last year, a lifeguard at Asbury Park beach was impaled by a beach umbrella in what fire officials described as a freak accident.
The fire chief described the victim as tough. The victim was treated at the scene and released. No charges were filed.
Officials say beachgoers should secure umbrellas properly in windy conditions.
And in the Netherlands, back in July of last year, construction workers discovered a medieval sword at the bottom of a river and did what any reasonable person would do.
They called archaeologists.
The sword is believed to be a thousand years old and features rare gold-copper symbols. It is now on display at a Dutch museum. Officials say the craftsmanship suggests it belonged to someone of high status.
The museum has not identified a suspect.
That is not how museums work.
Still ahead this morning on KRAK 11 News: a dog who knows where the treats are and will not rest until justice is served. Animals is next.
You will want to see this one.
ANIMALS
This is Animals.
The KRAK 11 animal countdown. Three videos, ranked by how many views they have gained in the last four days.
Not their total. Just what they gained.
We count down from three.
Number three is a video titled Woman Kicks Seal Off Her Boat, posted by guipascale on the sixteenth of August. Two point one million new views in four days.
Number two is titled Check For Context, posted by Benji Void on the sixteenth. Two point six million new views in the same window.
And number one, unchanged for six hours now, is When Kindness Goes Both Ways, posted by Windypaws on the twentieth of August. Five point three million new views in the last four days.
That is a lot of people watching.
It is.
All three of those are on the KRAK 11 News Reel, and the link is in the description.
Coming up this morning, a quick look at sports. The Brewers won their fifty-second straight, and the Packers beat the Lions in preseason play.
Fifty-two wins. In a row.
That is still happening.
We will have that when we come back.
A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS
A quick look at sports.
You have four scores lined up.
I do. And they are all good ones.
Magnus Carlsen defended his chess title at the Esports World Cup for the ninth straight year, beating Fabiano Caruana four and a half to three and a half. The greatest of all time, and he proved it again.
Pete Crow-Armstrong hit his forty-first consecutive walk-off RBI for the Cubs, extending his own major league record. Chicago beat the White Sox six to five.
The Brewers won their fifty-third straight game, beating the Cardinals nine to two. Milwaukee is rewriting the franchise record book every single night.
And the Packers beat the Lions twenty-four to seventeen Saturday night in preseason play. Green Bay looked sharp.
They did.
Coming up at the top of the hour - we have breaking news out of Fairmont this morning, and we will bring you those details as soon as we have them confirmed.
That is KRAK 11 News. We will see you in just a moment.
