KRAK 11 NEWS
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. It is six o'clock. This is KRAK 11 News.
This hour: actress Lucy Davis speaks publicly for the first time since her cancer diagnosis. The World Desk has her remarks from London.
Florida Man Tribute: a two-year-old gets himself stuck inside a claw machine back in February of this year. His parents turned around for fifteen seconds.
The sea urchin video has now led our animal countdown for forty-eight consecutive hours. I have watched it seventeen times.
That seems like a lot.
And Sports: the Supreme Court has allowed construction on a Trump ballroom to continue for now. We will explain what that has to do with sports.
I look forward to that explanation.
Coming up in just a few minutes on The World Desk: Lucy Davis says she is grateful for the support she has received in the last two weeks. We have what she said.
Let's begin.
THE WORLD DESK
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. We have six items tonight from London, the Middle East, Beijing, England and Portugal.
Three of them are sports-adjacent.
And one of them is a robot.
We begin tonight in London, where actress Lucy Davis spoke publicly for the first time since her cancer diagnosis.
Davis, best known for her role in The Office, appeared at a convention in London less than two weeks after announcing her condition. She told fans she was grateful for their support.
She did not provide details about treatment or prognosis, but said the messages from fans around the world had meant a great deal to her.
The convention appearance was her first public event since the announcement.
In the Middle East, Syria is calling the latest Israeli airstrike near Damascus a violation of international law.
The strike came days after reports that Israel had hit a military airbase near the Turkish border.
Syria's foreign ministry issued a statement condemning what it called ongoing Israeli aggression. Israel has not commented on the latest incident.
The Turkish border runs along the northern part of Syria.
The western part.
West. Of course.
An update now on the robot that beat Usain Bolt's hundred-meter record in Beijing over the weekend. The video has now been watched more than forty million times.
Honor, the company that built it, still has not released the official time. The robot ran the distance at the World Humanoid Robot Games, and observers clocked it at nine point three nine seconds.
Bolt's record is nine point five eight seconds, set in Berlin in two thousand nine.
Sixteen years ago.
Sixteen years.
The robot does not look tired.
They rarely do.
In England, two men arrested on suspicion of manslaughter after the death of a twenty-two-year-old soldier have been released on bail.
The soldier disappeared on a night out, and authorities launched a major search before his body was found. Police have not released the names of those arrested or confirmed the soldier's identity.
The investigation is ongoing.
And in Portugal, former West Bromwich Albion midfielder Quevin Castro has died at the age of twenty-five.
Castro collapsed during a friendly match. Medical personnel attempted to revive him on the field, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
He played for West Brom in the English Championship and had recently returned to Portugal to play for Académico de Viseu.
The club has not released a cause of death.
We are glad you are with us tonight. If you are watching on YouTube, a subscription costs you nothing and it helps us keep doing this.
It does.
Still ahead tonight on KRAK 11 News, we have been following a case out of Wexler County for three weeks now, and there is movement.
The sheriff's office says they will brief reporters at ten tonight, and we will carry that live. That is Criminal Intent, in a few minutes.
We will be right back.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. Welcome back to KRAK 11 News.
We have four Florida Man Tributes tonight. All of them involve someone making a decision that seemed like a good idea at the time.
And one of them involves a meteorite.
We begin with what may be the strangest crime scene in America: the warehouse where lost luggage goes to die. Back in March of this year, Unclaimed Baggage released their annual report of what people tried to fly with and never claimed.
Among the items: a forty-three thousand dollar pair of diamond earrings, a thirty-five thousand dollar Rolex, samurai swords, gold-plated golf clubs, rat poison, and a full beekeeper suit.
And a meteorite.
A person of interest packed a space rock.
They did. No charges were filed, because you can legally check a meteorite. You cannot legally abandon one at baggage claim, but apparently you can forget about it for ninety days and let Alabama sell it.
The beekeeper suit raises questions.
It does. You pack that suit for a reason. You have bees waiting for you. And then you just leave the airport without it.
Back in February of this year, a toddler in Florida became a person of interest in a different kind of theft. Two-year-old Cooper climbed inside a claw machine at a grocery store while his parents were distracted. It took fifteen seconds.
Authorities say the suspect was smiling the entire time. He showed no remorse. Store management had to dismantle the machine to extract him.
Police say. Authorities say the suspect was smiling.
Thank you, counselor. No charges were filed. Cooper was released to his parents and is considered reformed.
Also in February, a pilot flying over Rhode Island reported an unidentified object beside his aircraft. Air traffic control responded, quote, 'Good luck with the aliens.'
The FAA has not confirmed whether the object was a drone, a weather balloon, or something else. The pilot was not charged with filing a false report, which means somebody believed him.
Or nobody wanted to be the one who said they didn't.
And finally tonight, back in February a soccer match in England was briefly delayed when a seagull was struck mid-flight by the ball. Players rushed onto the field to perform CPR on the bird.
The seagull recovered and flew away. No charges were filed against the player who kicked the ball.
That is one hundred and four Florida Man Tributes in forty-three weeks.
Still ahead tonight on KRAK 11 News: the sea urchin video remains undefeated. ANIMALS is next.
You are watching KRAK 11 News.
ANIMALS
Time now for the good news desk.
Three videos tonight, ranked by how many views they gained in the last seventy-two hours.
The sea urchin is still number one.
Number three is Baby Deer Trapped On A Freezing Pond, posted by Sassy. Three million, one hundred and sixty-seven thousand new views.
That video has held third place for eight straight days.
Number two is When Kindness Goes Both Ways, posted by Windypaws. Four million, two hundred and thirty thousand new views. YouTube has it at number one on their own trending chart.
And number one, for the third straight day, is Sea Urchin, posted by Nick DiGiovanni. Five million, four hundred and three thousand new views.
How many times have you watched it now?
Eighteen.
That's more than yesterday.
I watched it twice this morning.
All three are on the KRAK 11 News Reel, and the link is in the description.
Still ahead on KRAK 11 News tonight, Pete Crow-Armstrong just tied a major league record that has stood for ninety-three years. A quick look at sports in just a few minutes.
A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS
Time now for a quick look at sports.
Twenty-nine consecutive walk-offs now for Pete Crow-Armstrong.
The other team knows it's coming and they still can't stop him.
Magnus Carlsen has defended his chess title at the Esports World Cup for the fourth straight year, beating Ian Nepomniachtchi four games to two.
Pete Crow-Armstrong hit his twenty-ninth consecutive walk-off RBI tonight for the Cubs. Chicago beat the White Sox four to three.
The Brewers won their fortieth straight game, beating the Pirates six to two. That extends their franchise record.
In college football, Ohio State is ranked number four in Yahoo Sports' preseason top twenty-five. They open against Michigan State on September second.
Coming up at the top of the hour, the next KRAK 11 News. We'll see you then.
