KRAK 11 NEWS
Good afternoon. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. This is KRAK 11 News.
This hour: The World Desk, where Michael Carrick says his Manchester United side didn't look ready against Hull. Criminal Intent — treasured relics recovered from a North Carolina lake. Animals — the sea urchin video has led our countdown for forty-seven consecutive hours.
And A Quick Look at Sports, where a New York tax on second homes has sparked a controversy.
That's not sports.
It was filed under sports.
Still ahead this afternoon — a cleanup effort in North Carolina brought up a 1920s Model T truck and a boat named Pooh Bear. We'll tell you what else they found when we come back.
The World Desk is next.
THE WORLD DESK
The World Desk.
Good afternoon.
I have been reading about cricket all morning.
How is that going?
I understand most of it.
We begin in England, where Durham have hammered Derbyshire by three hundred and thirty-eight runs in Division Two of the County Championship.
Ben Stokes hit sixty-six not out and took five wickets for seventeen runs as Durham wrapped the match inside three days.
That is the second division.
It is Division Two, yes.
So they have been promoted.
Durham is in Division Two. Derbyshire is also in Division Two. They are playing each other because they are in the same division.
Right. But one of them moves up.
At the end of the season, yes.
Thank you, Deb.
In England, police have arrested two men on suspicion of manslaughter after the death of a twenty-two-year-old soldier whose disappearance on a night out triggered a major search.
Authorities have not released the names of those arrested or confirmed the soldier's identity. The investigation is ongoing.
We will follow that as more information becomes available.
In Japan, prosecutors say charges will be filed by Friday against the father who left his seven-year-old son alone on Mount Fuji during a family hike.
The man had taken his two sons on the trip but left one behind when the child became tired. The boy was found safe several hours later by other hikers.
We first reported that story earlier this afternoon. Prosecutors have now confirmed the timeline.
And former West Bromwich Albion midfielder Quevin Castro has died at the age of twenty-five after collapsing during a friendly match in Portugal.
Castro was playing for Portimonense when he collapsed during the first half. Medical staff treated him on the pitch but he was pronounced dead at hospital.
The Portuguese Football Federation has opened an investigation.
Twenty-five years old.

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick says he is remaining calm after his team's two to one loss to Hull City at Old Trafford this weekend.
Carrick told reporters his side did not look ready but he is refusing to panic despite the shock result against the newly promoted side.
Hull City was just promoted to the Premier League.
They were, yes.
So this is their first win at Old Trafford in seventeen years.
That is a long time to wait.
It is.
Still ahead this afternoon, Criminal Intent. A hairdresser in Detroit is back in court over that service dispute from March. We will have the latest on what happened in the preliminary hearing.
That is Criminal Intent, coming up in just a few minutes on KRAK 11 News.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good afternoon. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. Welcome to the Blotter.
We have four Florida Man Tributes this afternoon. None of them involve actual crimes, but all of them involve decisions that raise questions.
One hundred and one Tributes in forty-three weeks.
We begin this afternoon with North Carolina, back in June of last year. Authorities draining Lake Lure during Helene recovery efforts discovered what can only be described as an underwater crime scene of abandoned property.
Among the discoveries: a nineteen-twenties Model T-style truck, condition unknown, and a thirty-two-foot wooden boat registered under the name Pooh Bear.
They also found jewelry, cell phones, and what authorities described as long-lost family treasures.
No charges have been filed. Investigators say most of the items appear to have been lost rather than deliberately submerged, though the truck remains a person of interest.
The truck is a vehicle, Chip.
An uncooperative one. Next — another Tribute, this one from back in December. A survey asked Americans which animals they believed they could defeat in unarmed combat.
Nearly three percent — that is three in every hundred respondents — said they were confident they could beat a grizzly bear with no weapons.
The survey did not ask respondents to prove it.
A grizzly bear weighs eight hundred pounds and runs thirty-five miles per hour. The respondents were not asked to provide their own statistics.
Six percent said they could beat a gorilla. Eight percent believed they could take an elephant.
The survey also found seventy-two percent believed they could defeat a rat, which strikes me as realistic until you meet the rat.
From Georgia now — back in January, state lawmakers introduced a bill to designate lemon pepper as the official state chicken wing flavor.
House Bill ten-thirteen would make Georgia the first state in the union with an official wing designation. The bill has been referred to committee.
No word yet on whether the bill includes enforcement provisions or whether neighboring states plan to challenge Georgia's flavor sovereignty.
Lawmakers say the designation celebrates Atlanta's food culture. The vote is expected later this session.
Still ahead this afternoon — Animals, where the sea urchin video continues its forty-seven-hour reign at the top of the KRAK eleven countdown.
Chip has now watched it fourteen times.
I am conducting research.
Animals, in just a moment.
ANIMALS
Time now for Animals.
The KRAK 11 animal countdown. Ranked by views gained in the last three days.
We count what people are watching right now, not what they watched last month.
Three videos this afternoon.
At number three, a video from Sassy posted on the thirteenth of August. Baby Deer Trapped On A Freezing Pond. Three million one hundred forty-one thousand new views.
That one has held third place for eight straight days now.
Number two. When Kindness Goes Both Ways. Posted by Windypaws on the twentieth. Four million five thousand seven hundred twenty-four new views.
That is YouTube's number one trending video today.
And at number one on the KRAK 11 animal countdown, a video from Nick DiGiovanni posted August nineteenth. Sea Urchin. Five million two hundred eighty-eight thousand nine hundred twenty-five new views.
Forty-seven consecutive hours at number one.
I have watched it fifteen times.
I know.
All three are on the KRAK 11 News Reel and the link is in the description.
Coming up this afternoon, a quick look at sports, and Pete Crow-Armstrong has made it twenty-five in a row.
Twenty-five consecutive games with a walk-off. The Cubs are running out of adjectives.
That is next on KRAK 11 News.
A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS
A quick look at sports.
You know I have been waiting for this all afternoon.
You have had the scoreboard open on your phone since lunch.
The Brewers beat the Twins tonight, eight to five. That is thirty-eight straight wins. Franchise record now by a country mile.
Pete Crow-Armstrong did it again. Walk-off RBI in the bottom of the ninth. Cubs over the White Sox, four to three.
Twenty-six consecutive games.
Magnus Carlsen defended his chess title at the Esports World Cup for the third straight year. Beat Nepomniachtchi four games to two.
And in cricket, Durham beat Derbyshire by three hundred and thirty-eight runs. Ben Stokes hit sixty-six not out and took five for seventeen.
Still ahead at the top of the hour, we will have more news from Wexler County and around the world.
We will see you then.
