KRAK 11 NEWS
Good afternoon. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. This is KRAK 11 News, Fairmont.
Coming up this hour: The World Desk, where a humanoid robot has just beaten Usain Bolt's hundred-meter record in Beijing. Criminal Intent, where a restaurant's security camera caught something unusual at a table back in June. Animals, where the sea urchin is still on top. And A Quick Look At Sports.
That is a lot of sports for a quick look.
It has been a busy week.
Still ahead on The World Desk — the robot ran it in nine point three nine seconds, and the company that built it still has not released the official time. We will tell you why.
That is next.
THE WORLD DESK
Good afternoon. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. We have six stories this afternoon, three of them about athletes, and one involving a mountain you think is in the Alps.
Mount Fuji is a beautiful part of Japan.
It is. It's also an active volcano on Honshu Island, twelve thousand feet high, and nowhere near the Alps.
We begin in Japan, where prosecutors say formal charges will be filed by Friday against the father who left his seven-year-old son alone on Mount Fuji during a family hike.
The boy was found hours later by other hikers. The father told police his son was tired and he wanted to continue climbing with his older child. Prosecutors confirmed the charges this morning.
No word yet on what the specific charges will be.
In Portugal, former West Bromwich Albion midfielder Quevin Castro has died at the age of twenty-five after collapsing during a friendly match on Saturday.
Castro was playing for Portimonense when he fell during the first half. Medical staff treated him on the pitch but he was pronounced dead at hospital. The Portuguese Football Federation has opened an investigation.
No cause has been released.
Not yet. Castro had joined Portimonense this summer after two seasons with West Brom.
Twenty-five years old.
Also this weekend, British cyclist Josh Tarling finished third in the opening stage of the Vuelta a España, just eight days after his younger brother Fin died in a crash.
Tarling, who rides for Ineos Grenadiers, completed the time trial in Lisbon on Saturday and spoke afterward about racing in his brother's memory. The stage was won by Portugal's Nelson Oliveira.
The Vuelta is the big one. Three-week stage race through Spain.
Through Spain and Portugal this year. They opened in Lisbon.
I thought you said Spain.
The race is Spanish. The start was Portuguese. Grand Tours do that sometimes.
Makes sense.
And we have an update on the Sydney Marathon medal story we brought you earlier. Organizers have now commissioned an entirely new design after the original depicted Munich's Olympic Stadium instead of the Sydney Opera House.
The mistake was caught by runners online who noticed the error when the medal was unveiled last week. All finishers will receive the corrected version when the race runs next month.
The Sydney Marathon is in September. They have time.
September in Australia.
Early spring. Should be nice weather for it.
I was going to say that.
You were thinking about the Alps again.
In the Netherlands, world champion Lando Norris secured back-to-back pole positions for Sunday's Dutch Grand Prix but says he expects a real fight when the race begins.
Norris set the fastest lap in qualifying on Saturday. Red Bull's Max Verstappen will start alongside him on the front row. Verstappen has won this race the last three years running.
He's Dutch. Racing at home. The circuit is at Zandvoort, right on the North Sea coast.
Beautiful part of the country.
It is. Very flat. Nothing like the Alps.
I know where the Netherlands is.
If you're watching on YouTube, a subscribe helps a station our size more than you might think.
Costs you nothing. Means a great deal to us.
Still ahead this afternoon on KRAK 11 News, Criminal Intent. A case out of Wayne County involving a service dispute that escalated well beyond what anyone expected, and the weapon that brought it to an end.
That's in a few minutes.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good afternoon. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. Time now for the Blotter.
We have one hundred Florida Man Tributes in forty-three weeks.
This is the hundredth.
We begin this afternoon with what authorities are calling the most poorly planned prison delivery in South Carolina history. Back in December of last year, a drone was intercepted attempting to drop what was described as a Thanksgiving feast into Lee Correctional Institution.
The cargo manifest included steak, crab legs, and what prosecutors describe as illicit items.
Prosecutors allege the drone operator attempted to bypass perimeter security by approaching from the northwest corner where camera coverage was limited.
Guards on the yard spotted it anyway.
Three arrests.
Authorities in northern England say surveillance footage from back in June of this year shows a customer placing a hair into a child's macaroni and cheese before complaining to staff.
The restaurant says the customer was caught on camera. Police said the individual demanded a full refund.
No charges have been filed.
In Austin, back in December of last year, a physician was found deceased inside a Dollar Tree freezer. Authorities say the mother of two was discovered by an employee during opening hours.
Police have not disclosed the cause of death. The investigation remains open.
And from San Francisco, back in December of last year, Waymo confirmed a child was born inside one of its autonomous vehicles while the car was in motion.
The company said the vehicle safely navigated to a hospital while the birth was in progress.
Both mother and child were reported in good health.
No word on whether the car received a tip.
That is the Blotter. Coming up this afternoon, the sea urchin video has now led our animal countdown for forty-seven consecutive hours.
Animals, in just a moment.
ANIMALS
Time now for Animals.
The Good News Desk.
It is a very good news desk today.
It is every day, Chip.
The KRAK 11 animal countdown ranks videos by how many views they have gained in the last three days, not their total. We count three.
Number three is Baby Deer Trapped On A Freezing Pond, posted by Sassy on August thirteenth. Three million one hundred twenty-four thousand new views in three days.
That video has held third place for eight straight days now.
Number two is When Kindness Goes Both Ways, posted by Windypaws on August twentieth. Three million eight hundred seventy-two thousand new views in three days.
And number one is Sea Urchin, posted by Nick DiGiovanni on August nineteenth. Five million two hundred thirty-two thousand new views in three days.
The sea urchin video has now led our countdown for forty-seven consecutive hours.
I have watched it fourteen times.
I know you have.
All three are on the KRAK 11 News Reel and the link is in the description.
Still ahead this afternoon, a quick look at sports, and one manager says his team didn't look ready.
After a loss at Old Trafford.
That is next on KRAK 11 News.
A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS
A quick look at sports.
Four results tonight, and one of them is genuinely remarkable.
I know which one you mean.
In the Premier League this afternoon, Tottenham beat Brentford two-nil. Sangare scored both goals for Spurs, and Tonali had a match to forget for the home side.
Magnus Carlsen defended his chess title at the Esports World Cup yesterday, beating Ian Nepomniachtchi four games to two. That is back to back titles for Carlsen.
Pete Crow-Armstrong hit his twenty-fourth consecutive walk-off RBI for the Cubs last night. That is twenty-four straight games. The major league record is now his.
Twenty-four consecutive walk-offs.
I have checked the math twice.
Coming up at the top of the hour - we will have the latest on the Fairmont city council vote, and whether the rezoning plan survives a second reading. That is next on KRAK 11 News.
Good afternoon, Wexler County.
