KRAK 11 NEWS
Good afternoon. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. This is KRAK 11 News at two o'clock.
This hour on KRAK 11: The World Desk — a humanoid robot has beaten Usain Bolt's hundred meter record at the World Games in Beijing, and the company still will not say what the time was.
Criminal Intent — dozens of American cities have canceled their contracts with Flock surveillance, and privacy experts say the companies replacing them are no better.
Animals — the sea urchin video has now led our countdown for forty-six hours straight.
You have watched it thirteen times.
It is remarkable footage. And A Quick Look at Sports — but we begin this afternoon with The World Desk, coming up in just a moment on KRAK 11 News.
THE WORLD DESK
Good afternoon. You are watching KRAK 11 News.
We have some stories from around the world this afternoon, starting with a marathon organizer in Australia who is having a very long week.
And a professional footballer in England who is contesting the last ten months of his own contract.
We begin with a very unusual error out of Australia, where organizers of the Sydney Marathon have had to commission an entirely new finisher medal.
The original design, unveiled earlier this week, depicted Munich's Olympic Stadium on one side instead of a Sydney landmark.
Munich is in Germany.
It is. And the Sydney Marathon is in Sydney.
Which is in Australia.
Online observers noticed the error almost immediately after the medal was unveiled. The race is scheduled for September fourteenth, and organizers say new medals will be ready in time.
You would think somebody would have caught that before they announced it.
You would.
In the Netherlands, Lando Norris has taken back-to-back pole positions for Sunday's Dutch Grand Prix, but says he expects a real challenge when the race gets underway.
Norris, who is the reigning world champion, secured the top starting position in qualifying earlier today. Rain is forecast for Sunday, which could change the complexion of the race entirely.
The Netherlands is right on the North Sea, so weather comes in fast.
The Netherlands borders the North Sea, yes. The race is at Zandvoort, which is a coastal town just west of Amsterdam.
So weather is a factor.
It is.
In England, Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta is challenging the validity of the final ten months of his contract with the club.
Mateta's representatives have filed a formal challenge claiming that the extension on his current deal, which runs through next summer, was improperly executed. Palace has not yet commented publicly.
Crystal Palace plays in London.
They do. South London, specifically.
I have been to London.
You have told me.
In Japan, prosecutors have confirmed that a father who left his seven-year-old son alone on Mount Fuji during a family hike will face formal charges by the end of the week.
That is new today. The man had been hiking with both of his sons when one became too tired to continue. He left the boy and continued up the mountain with his other son.
The seven-year-old was found hours later by other hikers and returned safely. He was not injured. The timeline for charges was confirmed by prosecutors this morning.
Mount Fuji is over twelve thousand feet.
It is. Just over twelve thousand three hundred feet. It is the tallest mountain in Japan.
That is a difficult hike for a seven-year-old.
It is.
Still ahead this afternoon, CRIMINAL INTENT. A hairdresser in Detroit is accused of pulling a gun on a customer over a service dispute. Deb has that story when we come back.
You are watching KRAK 11 News.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good afternoon. Time now for the KRAK 11 Blotter, and we begin with the ninety-eighth Florida Man Tribute.
Ninety-eight in forty-three weeks.
We are tracking the national data very closely.
This one is from west Michigan back in January of this year. Someone stole a six-foot taxidermied black bear from a porch in Kent County.
Just walked up and took it. Six feet tall, fully mounted, not a small item to conceal. The homeowner said it had been on the porch for years.
Police said they're reviewing surveillance footage from the area.
Which means somewhere in Kent County there is footage of a man carrying a bear.
Back in November of last year, a homeowner in Princeton, Texas thought there might be bees in a bathroom wall. There were fifteen thousand of them.
Beekeepers removed the hive and said the colony had been there for months. No one was stung during the removal.
Back in January of this year, a parent in Eastpointe was bound over on charges after allegedly threatening to shoot up a school because their child did not get snack time.
Prosecutors allege the parent threatened a teacher and used the phrase 'air the place out' before leaving campus. The parent was arrested the following day.
The case is proceeding to circuit court.
And back in September of last year, NOAA predicted Northern Lights would be visible as far south as the Midwest on Labor Day, thanks to an eruption of charged material from the Sun.
The Space Weather Prediction Center said the display could reach states that rarely see auroras. Viewers as far south as Kansas reported sightings that night.
Ninety-eight Florida Man Tributes in forty-three weeks.
Still ahead this afternoon, a look at the animals. The sea urchin video is still in first place after forty-six consecutive hours.
I have watched it thirteen times.
We know. KRAK 11 News continues in a moment.
ANIMALS
Time now for the Good News Desk.
The KRAK 11 animal countdown. We rank by views gained in the last three days, and we count down from three.
Forty-six hours at number one now.
You have watched it thirteen times.
At number three, Baby Deer Trapped On A Freezing Pond. Posted by Sassy, three million one hundred eleven thousand new views in three days. It has held third place for seven straight days.
Seven days at number three. People are steady in their affections.
At number two, When Kindness Goes Both Ways. Posted by Windypaws, three million seven hundred forty thousand new views.
Windypaws is a reliable source.
And at number one, unchanged for forty-six consecutive hours, the sea urchin video. Posted by Nick DiGiovanni, five million one hundred eighty-two thousand new views.
Forty-six hours.
I stand by every viewing.
All three videos are on the KRAK 11 News Reel, and the link is in the description.
Still ahead this afternoon on KRAK 11 News, the Brewers have won thirty-six straight, Pete Crow-Armstrong has walked off twenty-two consecutive games, and we will explain how both of those things are possible. A Quick Look at Sports in a few minutes.
A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS
A quick look at sports.
You have five results on that runner.
It has been a good day for people who win things.
Magnus Carlsen defended his chess title at the Esports World Cup in Riyadh, beating Ian Nepomniachtchi four games to two. That's Carlsen's fifth consecutive world title.
The Milwaukee Brewers beat the Cardinals eight to three, extending their winning streak to thirty-seven games. That's a franchise record and the longest active streak in baseball.
Pete Crow-Armstrong hit a walk-off single in the ninth for the Cubs, beating the White Sox five to four. That's twenty-three consecutive games with a walk-off RBI, a major league record.
Twenty-three straight walk-offs.
The man does not believe in extra innings.
And the Sydney Marathon has commissioned entirely new finisher medals after the original design accidentally featured Munich's Olympic Stadium instead of the Sydney Opera House.
Coming up at the top of the hour, we'll have the latest from the sheriff's briefing on the warehouse fire in Shoreham.
That's next on KRAK 11 News.
