THE WORLD DESK
Good morning. You are watching KRAK 11 News. I am Chip Marlowe.
And I am Deb Sarkissian. We have updates from Canada, Australia, and Japan this morning.
Gordo, can we get a countdown clock on the Canada tariffs?
Two hours fifty-four minutes.
Thank you, Gordo.
We begin with new developments in the U.S.-Canada trade dispute. Those tariffs we told you about earlier are now less than three hours from taking effect. Canadian officials confirmed this morning that retaliatory tariffs will match the U.S. levy dollar for dollar.
The fifty percent levy applies to twenty billion dollars of Canadian imports. It takes effect at noon Eastern time.
Three hours from right now.
That is correct. Trade talks broke down at eleven forty-three last night, seventeen minutes before the midnight deadline. Canada's finance minister says the response will be immediate and proportional.
Which means it starts at noon.
It does.
In Australia, the Sydney Marathon has now commissioned an entirely new finisher medal after discovering their original design depicted the wrong stadium entirely. The medal showed Munich's Olympic Stadium instead of Sydney Olympic Park.
Munich is in Germany.
It is.
Which is not in Australia.
Online sleuths detected the error after organizers unveiled the double-sided medal. The new medal is being manufactured now and will be ready before race day in August.
At least they caught it before they handed out seventeen thousand of them.
That would have been a difficult correction to make.
In Japan, new developments this morning in the Mount Fuji case. Prosecutors say they are now reviewing whether to file charges against the father who left his seven-year-old son alone on the mountain. Police completed their interviews yesterday.
The boy is safe and has been reunited with his mother. His father had taken both sons on the hike but continued on alone when the younger child became tired.
Mount Fuji is twelve thousand feet. That is higher than most of the Rockies.
The Rockies are taller. Mount Elbert is over fourteen thousand feet.
I stand corrected.
Mount Fuji is still a significant climb for a seven-year-old.
It is a significant climb for me.
In the United States, the FAA has now opened a formal investigation into that laptop fire on American Airlines Flight 2398. The pilot reported a cabin fire in the back of the aircraft shortly after takeoff from San Francisco on Tuesday.
The flight landed safely. One passenger was treated at the airport for smoke inhalation. Investigators are examining the device to determine what caused the battery to ignite.
They were in the air less than twenty minutes.
The crew had the fire out in under two minutes. The FAA says a preliminary report will be available within ten days.
If you are watching us on YouTube this morning, we would be grateful if you subscribed. It means a great deal to a station this size.
Still ahead this morning on KRAK 11 News, Criminal Intent. A case out of Wexler County that took four months to solve, and the detail that broke it open came from a parking ticket. We will have that story in just a few minutes.
That is coming up.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good morning, Wexler County. It is time for the KRAK 11 Blotter.
We have four Florida Man Tributes this morning. They are all from last year, and they are all remarkable.
Snowballs. In Florida. That is the lead.
I do not know how you would even plan that.
Back in January of last year, police officers in Florida responded to what they thought was a routine disturbance. They were hit by snowballs. In Florida. One person was arrested.
Where did he get the snowballs?
The police report does not say. That is the detail I need.
Also back in January of last year, a Florida elementary school principal allegedly hosted a house party for underage students. Police say drugs, alcohol, fighting, and a gun were all present.
According to the affidavit.
According to the affidavit. Charges were filed.
Back in February of last year, a Florida man was arrested after he allegedly pulled a gun on another driver at an intersection in Clermont on a Sunday morning.
Police said he followed the driver to the intersection before drawing the weapon.
He was taken into custody without incident.
And we close the Florida file this morning with a case from California. Back in April of this year, Laura Lee Yourex of Costa Mesa pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor after registering her dog to vote in multiple California elections.
She told authorities she was trying to expose flaws in the system.
She succeeded.
Sentencing is scheduled for later this year.
That brings the KRAK 11 Florida Man Tribute count to eighty-nine.
Forty-three weeks.
We are averaging more than two a week. I consider that a service to the community.
Still ahead this morning — the sea urchin video remains number one on the KRAK 11 animal countdown for the forty-second consecutive hour, and the baby deer rescue is still in third.
You are watching KRAK 11 News.
ANIMALS
Time now for Animals.
The KRAK 11 animal countdown. Three videos, ranked by how many views each one has gained in the last three days.
We start at number three and count down from there.
Number three is Baby Deer Trapped On A Freezing Pond, posted by Sassy. Three million new views in the last three days. It has held third place for six straight days now.
Number two is When Kindness Goes Both Ways, posted by Windypaws. Three point one million new views. That is up two places since the last count.
And number one.
Still number one. For the forty-second consecutive hour.
Sea Urchin, posted by Nick DiGiovanni. Four point nine million new views in the last three days. Unchanged since the last count.
I have now watched that video eleven times.
And?
I still do not know what is happening.
I have watched it ten times and I am in the same place.
YouTube has it at number sixteen. We have it at number one. It has led our count for forty-two hours.
All three of those are on the KRAK 11 News Reel. The link is in the description.
Still ahead this morning, a quick look at sports. The Brewers have won thirty-three straight games. We will tell you how close that is to the longest winning streak in baseball history.
KRAK 11 News continues.
A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS
A quick look at sports.
I have the Brewers, the Cubs, Hull City, and Tottenham.
That is a lot of winning.
Hull City stun Manchester United at Old Trafford, winning two to one in the Premier League. Ajayi anchored the defense and made it count.
The Brewers extend their franchise record with thirty-four consecutive wins. They have not lost a game since the middle of April.
Pete Crow-Armstrong does it again. His walk-off RBI in the Cubs' three to two win over the White Sox is his twentieth consecutive game with a walk-off. That is a major league record that keeps getting longer.
Roberto De Zerbi has now won all five of his first matches as Tottenham manager. Five and oh.
You watch baseball at four in the morning.
I watch the highlights at four in the morning.
