KRAK 11 NEWS
Good morning. This is KRAK 11 News. I am Chip Marlowe.
And I am Deb Sarkissian. It is nine o'clock in Wexler County. Coming up this hour on KRAK 11 News:
The World Desk — Canadian tariffs match ours dollar for dollar, and the deadline passed seventeen minutes before midnight.
Criminal Intent — the President promised very interesting UFO files back in May. We are still waiting.
That is our eighty-sixth Florida Man Tribute.
Animals — the sea urchin video leads our countdown for the forty-first straight hour, and I have watched it ten times now.
And A Quick Look at Sports — Jake Rogers has played for four teams in four weeks, and the White Sox are the latest stop.
All of that this morning on KRAK 11 News. The World Desk is next, and those tariffs take effect in three hours.
THE WORLD DESK
Good morning. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. We have breaking developments from Ottawa this morning, new details on that Mount Fuji investigation, and the boxing world is mourning a champion.
Also this morning, the Sydney Marathon has thrown out their finisher medal and started over.
Someone noticed something.
We begin with breaking developments in the U.S.-Canada trade dispute. Those tariffs we reported earlier this morning are now just three hours away from taking effect.
The deadline passed at midnight and nothing changed. Ottawa is going ahead with fifty percent tariffs on twenty billion dollars of American goods starting at noon Eastern time.
That means American dairy, steel, and auto parts all get fifty percent more expensive heading north in three hours.
And Canadian lumber, aluminum, and energy get fifty percent more expensive heading south. The Canadian trade minister said this morning they will match the U.S. tariffs dollar for dollar.
The White House has not yet responded to requests for comment. We will stay on this as it develops.
In Japan, police have now completed their interviews with the father who left his seven-year-old son alone on Mount Fuji. He is not being charged, but prosecutors say they are reviewing the case.
The boy is fine. He was found by other hikers about forty minutes after his father left him on the trail and continued climbing with his older brother.
The father told police his younger son was tired and he thought it would be safer to leave him on the path than to bring him higher up the mountain.
Mount Fuji is twelve thousand feet. That is higher than most of the Rockies.
Mount Fuji is twelve thousand three hundred eighty-eight feet. The Rockies go to fourteen thousand four hundred forty.
Still a very tall mountain.
It is a very tall mountain.
In South Africa, the boxing world is mourning two-time world champion Zolani Tete, who was shot and killed outside his home in the Eastern Cape province last night.
Tete was thirty-seven. He held the IBF super-flyweight title and the WBO bantamweight title during a fifteen-year professional career. Police have made no arrests.
The International Boxing Federation called him one of the most gifted fighters of his generation. Our condolences to his family.
In Australia, the Sydney Marathon has now commissioned an entirely new finisher medal after organizers discovered the original design depicted the wrong stadium.
The medal showed Munich's Olympic Stadium instead of Sydney's. Somebody on the internet noticed it about six hours after they unveiled it.
The marathon is three months away. Organizers say they are working with the design firm to create a completely new medal and that it will be ready in time.
Good. You run twenty-six miles in Sydney, you should get a medal with Sydney on it.
That does seem fair.
In the United States, new information this morning about that laptop fire on American Airlines Flight 2398. The FAA has now opened a formal investigation into the incident.
The pilot reported a cabin fire in the back of the aircraft shortly after takeoff. The plane landed safely in Charlotte and all passengers were evacuated. One person was treated at the airport and released.
Investigators are examining the laptop and the battery to determine what caused the fire. American Airlines says the aircraft is out of service pending the investigation.
That is The World Desk. Still ahead this morning, Criminal Intent, and we have an update on that Wexler County case we have been following.
The arraignment is scheduled for ten a.m. and we will have that for you in just a few minutes.
Stay with us.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good morning. Time now for the KRAK 11 Blotter.
Four stories this morning, all of them from the Florida Man tribute file.
Eighty-seven tributes in forty-three weeks. We are averaging more than two a week at this point.
The state keeps providing material.
We begin with a Dalmatian onesie, which is not a sentence I expected to say at nine a.m. Back in February of last year, Florida Highway Patrol pursued a suspect through three counties.
The suspect was wearing a full-body Dalmatian costume at the time of his arrest, troopers said.
Spotted fleeing the scene.
Also back in February of last year, Jacksonville authorities deployed a mounted unit to pursue a suspect involved in a drug transaction gone wrong. The officer's horse closed a hundred-yard gap in under thirty seconds.
Body camera footage shows the officer instructing the horse to 'get that bad man.' The suspect was apprehended without injury, police said.
That is good police work and an outstanding animal.
The horse's name is not in the report, but the officer praised the animal's performance in the arrest summary.
Also from last year: a nine-one-one call from a Florida McDonald's led New York authorities directly to a suspect wanted in connection with two homicides. The caller reported suspicious behavior at the restaurant, police said.
The caller received a ten-thousand-dollar reward check for information that ended a multi-state manhunt, authorities confirmed.
That is a very good day at McDonald's.
The arrest was made without incident.
And finally from our tribute file: back in May of this year, President Trump hinted his administration may release new information on unidentified flying objects. He called the files, quote, 'very interesting.'
The President made similar statements multiple times over several months, the White House confirmed.
No files have been released as of this morning.
We will let you know when that changes.
Still ahead this morning: the sea urchin video has now led our countdown for forty-one consecutive hours, which raises a question I have been thinking about all week.
Animals is next.
ANIMALS
Time now for Animals.
The KRAK 11 animal countdown ranks videos by views gained in the last three days, not by total.
We count down from three.
Number three: Baby Deer Trapped On A Freezing Pond. Posted by Sassy on the thirteenth of August. Three million fifty-one thousand new views in the last three days.
That video has held third place for six straight days.
It is holding.
Number two: Why Coyotes And Badgers Hunt Together. Posted by Zack D. Films on the nineteenth. Three million five hundred seventy-four thousand new views.
YouTube's own trending chart has that one at number one.
We rank by growth.
And number one: Sea Urchin. Posted by Nick DiGiovanni on the nineteenth of August. Four million eight hundred ninety-two thousand new views in the last three days.
That video has led the KRAK 11 animal countdown for forty-one consecutive hours.
I have watched it ten times.
Do you know what is happening in it?
Not yet.
All three videos are on the KRAK 11 News Reel and the link is in the description below.
Coming up in just a few minutes: a quick look at sports. Pete Crow-Armstrong is still doing something no one in baseball has ever done, and we will tell you what it is.
KRAK 11 News continues.
A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS
A quick look at sports.
The Brewers are still winning.
They are still winning.
The Brewers beat the Cardinals eight to three, that's thirty-three straight wins. Pete Crow-Armstrong hit his nineteenth consecutive walk-off RBI as the Cubs beat the White Sox five to four in the tenth.
Tottenham won again under Roberto De Zerbi, four straight now, beating Fulham two to one at home.
And Jake Rogers is on the move again. The catcher has now played for four teams in four weeks: Detroit, Baltimore, Boston, and as of this morning, the Chicago White Sox.
That's a beautiful neighborhood he's building.
The next KRAK 11 News is at the top of the hour, and we'll have the sheriff's briefing on the Route Seventeen closure. Good morning, Wexler County.
