KRAK 11 NEWS
Good morning. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. It is seven o'clock and this is KRAK 11 News.
Coming up this hour: The World Desk — a father hiking Mount Fuji leaves his seven-year-old son behind to continue to the summit.
Criminal Intent — a college surplus store in Michigan handed out free pens last summer, then realized each one had a knife inside it.
Animals — the sea urchin video is still number one on our countdown, now leading for thirty-nine straight hours.
You have watched it nine times.
I still do not know what is happening. And A Quick Look at Sports — the Supreme Court rules on a Trump ballroom, the Brewers win their thirty-first straight, and Pete Crow-Armstrong goes for his seventeenth consecutive walk-off.
That is this hour on KRAK 11 News. The World Desk is up next, and we start on Mount Fuji.
THE WORLD DESK
Good morning. This is KRAK 11 News, and this is The World Desk.
Good morning. We have six countries represented this hour.
And I can place four of them on a map with confidence.
That is an improvement.
We begin in Japan, where authorities are now questioning a father about what happened on Mount Fuji this week.
The man took his two sons hiking. When the seven-year-old became tired, the father continued to the summit with the older boy, leaving the younger child alone on the mountain.
The boy was found safe by other hikers and turned over to police. The father returned later and is cooperating with the investigation.
Mount Fuji is over twelve thousand feet high.
Which is higher than the Rockies, if I am remembering correctly.
The tallest peaks in the Rockies are over fourteen thousand feet. Mount Fuji is in the middle.
So roughly the same.
From the Netherlands, George Russell won the sprint race at the Dutch Grand Prix this morning, leading from pole position to the checkered flag.
Russell drives for Mercedes and has not won a full Grand Prix since last season. The sprint race this morning was nineteen laps, just under half the distance of tomorrow's main event.
The circuit is in Zandvoort, which is on the North Sea coast about an hour from Amsterdam.
Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands.
The seat of government is The Hague. Amsterdam is the constitutional capital.
So I was correct.
In Australia, organizers of the Sydney Marathon have corrected a significant error on this year's finisher medal after online detectives spotted something unusual.
The double-sided medal was meant to show Sydney landmarks. One side did. The other side depicted a stadium in Munich, Germany.
The race is three months away. Organizers say they caught it in time and are redesigning the medal now.
Munich is close to the Alps.
It is about ninety minutes from the mountains.
Sydney is much farther from the Alps.
In trade news, Canada's retaliatory tariffs take effect in less than six hours. The new fifty percent levy applies to twenty billion dollars of Canadian imports and follows the breakdown of last-minute talks.
Canadian officials say they will match the American tariffs dollar for dollar. The retaliation takes effect at noon Eastern time.
The breakdown happened during talks in Ottawa late yesterday.
Ottawa is in the eastern part of Canada.
It is the capital.
I knew that one.
Still ahead this morning on KRAK 11, Criminal Intent. We have new details on a case Wexler County has been following for six months, and the sheriff's office says there may be charges as early as this week.
That is coming up in a few minutes.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good morning. This is the KRAK 11 Blotter.
We have our eighty-third Florida Man Tribute this morning, and it involves a giveaway that went very poorly.
How poorly?
Stab-yourself-in-the-hand poorly.
Back in July of last year, the Michigan State University Surplus Store was holding a summer sale. They were giving away free pens as a promotional item.
The pens had knives built into them. Actual blades.
The store issued a statement asking anyone who received a pen to please check it before using it. Write something down, lose a finger.
Also back in December of last year, Idaho State Police say two passengers escaped injury when a large piece of wood crashed through their windshield on Interstate Eighty-Four.
Authorities say the wood fell from a logging truck traveling ahead of the vehicle. The driver was able to pull over safely and nobody required medical attention.
Troopers located the logging company and the driver. No charges were filed.
The Centers for Disease Control reported in January that a Michigan man died from a rabies infection transmitted through a kidney transplant he received back in December of last year.
The CDC said this was the first documented case of human-to-human rabies transmission through organ transplant in the United States.
The donor had died from injuries unrelated to the infection. Testing protocols have been updated nationwide.
And back in December, Eastpointe residents raised concerns about live animals being used in an outdoor nativity scene during freezing temperatures.
The church said the animals were brought in for short periods and returned to heated shelters. Animal control investigated and found no violations.
The church said they appreciated the concern and would consider indoor displays in future years.
That is the Blotter.
Still ahead this morning on KRAK 11 News: the sea urchin video is still leading the animal countdown after thirty-nine consecutive hours, and the baby deer rescue is holding third for the sixth straight day.
Animals is next.
ANIMALS
Time now for Animals.
The KRAK 11 animal countdown, which ranks videos by views gained in the last three days, not total views.
We count what moved. YouTube counts what is biggest. Different questions.
At number three, a video posted by Sassy on the thirteenth of August. Baby Deer Trapped On A Freezing Pond. Three million and twenty thousand new views in the last three days.
Unchanged for six straight days.
At number two, posted by Zack D. Films on the nineteenth of August. Why Coyotes And Badgers Hunt Together. Three million, five hundred twenty-seven thousand new views.
YouTube's own trending chart has that one at number one.
And at number one on the KRAK 11 countdown, for the fortieth consecutive hour, posted by Nick DiGiovanni on the nineteenth. Sea Urchin. Four million, seven hundred seventy-two thousand new views in three days.
You have now watched that video nine times.
I still do not know what is happening.
All three videos are on the KRAK 11 News Reel. The link is in the description.

Still ahead this morning, a quick look at sports. The Brewers have won thirty straight games, Pete Crow-Armstrong has hit walk-off RBIs in sixteen consecutive, and Chip is going to explain how that is mathematically possible.
I have a theory.
A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS
A quick look at sports.
We have got streaks tonight that are rewriting the record books.
You have been waiting all day to say that.
The Milwaukee Brewers have won thirty-one straight games, extending their franchise record. They beat the Pirates last night, eight to three.
Pete Crow-Armstrong hit a walk-off RBI for the seventeenth consecutive game. The Cubs beat the White Sox, four to three.
Seventeen straight games. That is a major league record and it is not even close.
Tottenham won again under Roberto De Zerbi, beating Everton two to nil at Goodison Park. That is two wins from two matches for the new manager.
George Russell won the Dutch Grand Prix this morning, leading every lap from pole position. Max Verstappen finished second.
Coming up at the top of the hour on KRAK 11 News — the Brewers are one win away from making history, and we will tell you what record they are chasing next.
That is the scoreboard. We are glad you are here.
