KRAK 11 NEWS
Good morning. This is KRAK 11 News at the top of the hour.
Multiple people are confirmed dead after a crash involving a police vehicle on the A66 near Middlesbrough in the early hours of this morning. We will have the latest from Cleveland Police in a moment on The World Desk.
Also this hour: a passenger boards the wrong plane in Houston and does not realize it until asking why the trip is taking so long. That story and our eightieth Florida Man Tribute on Criminal Intent.
The sea urchin video is still number one on the KRAK 11 animal countdown after thirty-seven straight hours. We will explain why nobody knows what is happening in it on Animals.
Not knowing might be the point.
And a legal fight over a cartoon stick could decide who owns art made by artificial intelligence. That and the Brewers winning streak on A Quick Look at Sports.
The World Desk is next.
THE WORLD DESK
Good morning. This is the World Desk.
We have a father who left his child on a mountain, a trade war that takes effect in seven hours, and Tottenham spending money again.
Tottenham always spends money.
They do. Let us begin in Japan.
Authorities are investigating a father who left his seven-year-old son alone on Mount Fuji after the boy became too tired to continue the climb.
The man had taken his two sons on the hike. When the younger child said he was exhausted, the father reportedly continued upward with his older son.
Mount Fuji is what, nine thousand feet?
Twelve thousand three hundred eighty-eight.
That is not a small hill.
It is not. Japanese authorities have not said what charges the father may face.
In England, multiple people have died after a crash involving a police vehicle and a Volkswagen on the A66 near Middlesbrough.
Cleveland Police confirmed the collision early this morning. The A66 is a major route through northeast England.
That would be near Liverpool.
Middlesbrough is on the opposite coast, about a hundred fifty miles northeast of Liverpool.
So closer to Scotland.
Much closer to Scotland.
Police have not released the number of fatalities or the circumstances of the collision. They are expected to brief the press later today.
In trade news, Canada has confirmed its dollar-for-dollar tariff retaliation will take effect at noon Eastern time, seven hours from now.
The talks broke down in Edmonton just after midnight on Tuesday.
Ottawa.
I said Edmonton.
You did. The talks broke down in Ottawa, which is the capital.
I know it is the capital.
Edmonton is twelve hundred miles west of Ottawa.
Both excellent cities.
That they are.
The U.S. imposed a fifty percent levy on twenty billion dollars of Canadian imports just after midnight on Tuesday. Canadian officials say the retaliation package matches the American tariff dollar for dollar.
And in British politics, Lord O'Neill, the former chief economist at Goldman Sachs, has ruled out taking a government job but says he supports the Prime Minister's devolution plans.
O'Neill had been expected to become chief economic adviser to Andy Burnham, but the BBC reports he will not be taking the position.
Burnham is the mayor of Greater Manchester and a longtime Labour figure.
And in sports, Tottenham have brought in Roberto De Zerbi as manager, and the BBC reports he has had time and money to build what they are calling a new-look squad.
De Zerbi had success at Brighton before making the move to London.
Spurs have spent heavily in the transfer market, and De Zerbi is known for getting teams to play attractive football.
The question is whether they can turn it into silverware.
That is always the question at Tottenham.
Still ahead this morning on KRAK 11 News, a case we have been following for weeks, and new evidence that may change the timeline.
Criminal Intent is next.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good morning. Time now for the Blotter.
Four Florida Man Tributes this morning.
And one of them involves a passenger who got on the wrong airplane and did not realize it until they were over the Atlantic Ocean.
That is a significant navigation error.
Back in February of this year, a passenger at Newark Liberty Airport boarded a United flight, settled in for what they believed would be a short domestic hop to Houston, Texas.
It was not a short hop.
Several hours into the flight, the passenger asked a flight attendant why the Houston trip was taking so long. The flight attendant informed them they were not going to Houston.
They were going to Paris.
Paris, France. The passenger had boarded the wrong aircraft entirely. United confirmed the incident and said they are reviewing gate procedures.
That is KRAK eleven's eighty-first Florida Man Tribute in forty-three weeks.
Back in December of last year, Cook County authorities recovered one hundred thousand dollars in stolen Wawa coffee and half a million dollars in protein powder from what prosecutors allege was a cargo theft ring.
Authorities said the seizures are part of a growing trend in cargo theft targeting high-demand consumer goods.
One hundred thousand dollars is a lot of coffee.
It is several truckloads.
Back in June of last year, police in Dearborn Heights investigated what they called an ongoing harassment situation involving a masked individual targeting a family with what officers described as disturbing behavior.
Police said the individual had been seen repeatedly near the family's property wearing a mask. No charges were filed at the time of the initial report.
And back in August of last year, the Air Guitar World Championships returned to Finland for its twenty-eighth edition, drawing performers from thirteen countries to compete in Oulu.
Competitors were judged on technical merit, stage presence, and what organizers called airness.
Airness.
The quality of playing an instrument that does not exist.
Coming up in just a few minutes - the sea urchin video has now led our animal countdown for thirty-seven consecutive hours, and I still do not know what is happening in it.
Animals is next.
ANIMALS
Time now for Animals.
The KRAK 11 animal countdown, ranked by how many views a video has gained in the last three days.
Three videos. We count them down.
Starting at number three.
Baby Deer Trapped On A Freezing Pond, posted by Sassy. Two million nine hundred ninety-four thousand new views. It has held third place for five straight days.
Five days.
People keep coming back to it.
At number two - Why Coyotes And Badgers Hunt Together. Posted by Zack D. Films. Three million four hundred eighty-five thousand new views.
YouTube has it at number one on their trending chart. We rank by how much a video grew, and the growth goes to number one.
And at number one, still number one - Sea Urchin. Posted by Nick DiGiovanni. Four million six hundred seventy-two thousand new views.
It has now led our count for thirty-eight consecutive hours.
You have watched it nine times.
I have.
Do you know what is happening yet?
I do not.
All three videos are on the KRAK 11 News Reel. The link is in the description.
Still ahead this morning - a quick look at sports, and the Brewers have now won twenty-seven straight.
We will be right back.
A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS
Time now for a quick look at sports.
Good morning.
It is a very good morning if you are a Milwaukee Brewers fan.
The Brewers beat the Pirates four to one in Pittsburgh. That is twenty-eight straight wins, and they are not slowing down.
The Cubs beat the White Sox three to two. Pete Crow-Armstrong with the walk-off single in the ninth. That is fourteen consecutive games.
That is a major league record that keeps getting longer.
Ohio State comes in at number four in the Yahoo Sports preseason college football top twenty-five. They open against Akron on Saturday.
Coming up in just a few minutes - the next KRAK 11 News at the top of the hour. We will see you then.
