KRAK 11 NEWS
Good morning, Wexler County. Two a.m., and this is KRAK 11 News. Coming up this hour: Canada says it will match U.S. tariffs dollar for dollar after trade talks collapsed overnight.
Criminal Intent — the seventy-second Florida Man Tribute. Workers in Wayne found a suspected human skull back in November of last year.
Animals — the sea urchin video is still number one on the KRAK 11 animal countdown. Thirty-four consecutive hours and four and a half million new views in three days.
You have watched it nine times.
And I still do not know what is happening. Sports — Tottenham's James Maddison says his second set of twins helped distract him from an ACL injury.
Five children, all under four years old. Still ahead — The World Desk, and why Canada says Friday's deadline may not matter anymore.
THE WORLD DESK
Good morning. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. Two o'clock in the morning here in Wexler County, and we have breaking developments overnight in the trade dispute with Canada.
They are not happy.
They are not. Canada says it will match U.S. tariffs dollar for dollar, after trade talks broke down overnight. The fifty percent levy on twenty billion dollars of Canadian imports that came into force after midnight is now certain to trigger immediate retaliation.
Ottawa had set a Friday deadline for the talks. They missed it by four days.
The talks broke down after the midnight deadline.
Which was Tuesday.
It was. Canada's trade minister says the dollar-for-dollar response will take effect within hours, and will remain in place as long as the U.S. tariffs do.
The White House has not commented on the retaliation.
In Britain, the Duchess of Sussex may be returning to acting. The BBC reports Meghan is in talks for a role in the second season of the Netflix series The Gentlemen.
Guy Ritchie directed that one.
He did. This would be her first significant acting work since she married Prince Harry in twenty-eighteen. The talks are at an early stage and Netflix has not confirmed casting.
The first season of The Gentlemen came out in March. It was very popular.
It was. The series follows the film of the same name, also directed by Guy Ritchie, which came out in twenty-nineteen.
In Hong Kong, the last independent bookstores that serve mainland Chinese readers are closing their doors. For years those shops have sold books banned on the mainland, offering a window into ideas and history not available across the border.
That is a very important service.
It is. Several owners have shut down in recent months, citing pressure and uncertainty about Hong Kong's future under tightening mainland control. Those shops have operated quietly for decades, and for many readers they were the only access to uncensored accounts of Chinese history and politics.
That is a real loss.
New satellite analysis shows Israel has significantly expanded settlement construction in the occupied West Bank over the last several years. The analysis, published this morning, documents new building and extensive road construction on Palestinian land.
That construction is on occupied territory.
It is. The satellite imagery shows the scale of the expansion has accelerated in recent years, with new roads connecting settlements and cutting through what had been contiguous Palestinian areas. International law considers the settlements illegal, though Israel disputes that.
The construction continues despite objections.
In Washington, the BBC has identified a pattern in the questions President Trump shuts down. Analysis of recent press briefings shows he is most likely to cut off reporters asking about legal matters, financial disclosures, and policy details he has not yet announced.
He said quiet, quiet, quiet to one reporter this week.
He did. The analysis reviewed dozens of briefings and found the president allows questions about immigration and trade, but regularly shuts down reporters asking about ongoing investigations or personal finances.
He does not like those questions.
And if you are watching on YouTube early this morning, we are glad you found us. A subscription helps a small station more than you might think.
It does. It costs you nothing and it means a great deal to us.
Coming up in a few minutes - a case KRAK 11 has been following for eleven months reaches a courtroom, and the details are still unclear. Criminal Intent is next.
Stay with us.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Time now for the Krak 11 Blotter.
We begin this morning with our seventy-third Florida Man Tribute in forty-three weeks.
The spirit of Florida transcends state lines.
You said that last time.
I did.
Back in December of twenty twenty-four, the state of Florida released its annual list of rejected vanity plates. Among the applicants: zero-N-L-Y-F-N, zero-two-S-E-X-X-Y, and H-four-W-K-two-A-H.
Also rejected: F-A-R-T-Z.
The review board said no.
The review board was correct.
Also back in December of last year, a man in Lake County was arrested after allegedly brandishing a machete during what deputies described as a road rage incident that escalated quickly.
Deputies say he threatened a woman with the weapon, then fled on foot before he was apprehended.
Back in January of last year, police in Florida say a man exposed himself to customers inside a T.J. Maxx, including children. He was taken into custody.
Prosecutors filed charges.
And back in November of last year, construction workers in Wayne, Michigan unearthed what authorities believe is a human skull in the woods. Police opened an investigation.
They said they would release more information once the medical examiner completed the review.
Seventy-three Florida Man Tributes in forty-three weeks.
It is still true.
Still ahead this morning - the sea urchin video has now led our animal countdown for thirty-four consecutive hours, and I have watched it nine times.
You still do not know what is happening.
I do not.
Animals, in a few minutes.
ANIMALS
Time now for the Good News Desk, and the KRAK 11 animal countdown.
Three videos, ranked by the number of views each one gained in the last three days.
We count them down from three to one, and I have watched number one nine times now.
Number three this morning.
Baby Deer Trapped On A Freezing Pond, posted by Sassy. Two point nine million views gained. That is four straight days at number three.
Number two.
Why Coyotes And Badgers Hunt Together, from Zack D. Films. Three point four million new views. That video is number one on YouTube's own trending chart this morning.
And number one on the KRAK 11 countdown.
Sea Urchin, posted by Nick DiGiovanni. Four point five million views gained in three days. That is thirty-four consecutive hours at number one.
I still do not know what is happening in that video.
That might be why it is still number one.
All three are on the KRAK 11 News Reel. The link is in the description.
Still ahead this morning, a quick look at sports. The Brewers are now twenty-four and oh, and we will tell you what happened in Milwaukee last night.
That is next.
A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS
A quick look at the scoreboard.
Two in the morning and you are already smiling.
I like a good result, Deb.
Magnus Carlsen defended his chess title at the Esports World Cup in Riyadh this morning, winning the final match four games to three.
The Brewers beat the Reds eight to two this morning, extending their winning streak to twenty-five straight games.
And Pete Crow-Armstrong hit his eleventh consecutive walk-off RBI in the Cubs' four to three win over the White Sox.
Eleven in a row.
Coming up at the top of the hour - we will tell you what the county found buried under Main Street, and why it took them three days to say so.
That is the next KRAK 11 News. Thank you for watching.
