KRAK 11 NEWS
Good morning. This is KRAK 11 News at one o'clock. I'm Chip Marlowe.
I'm Deb Sarkissian. The United States has imposed a fifty percent tariff on twenty billion dollars of Canadian imports after trade negotiations collapsed early this morning.
We have four segments this hour. First, the World Desk — Canada says it will match those tariffs dollar for dollar, and we will tell you which products are affected and what happens next.
Then Criminal Intent — a New Jersey theme park is selling seventy-five-foot dinosaur statues on Facebook Marketplace, and we will tell you why.
Animals after that — the sea urchin video has now led our countdown for thirty-three hours, and Deb has a theory about why it will not move.
I have watched it twice.
Then a Quick Look at Sports — the United States has also imposed tariffs on twenty billion dollars of Canadian sporting goods, and we will explain what that means for the season ahead.
The World Desk is up in just a few minutes, and we will have the latest from the Canadian trade ministry. Stay with us.
THE WORLD DESK
Good morning. You are watching KRAK 11 News, Fairmont's number one rated newscast.
It has been a busy night at the border.
The third breakdown in as many weeks.
We begin this morning with breaking news from our northern border. Canada says it will match new U.S. tariffs dollar for dollar after trade talks collapsed overnight.
A fifty percent levy on twenty billion dollars of Canadian imports came into force just after midnight, following the breakdown of last-minute negotiations.
This is the third time negotiations have broken down. The first two times were in Alberta.
The first two times were in Ottawa. These were in Ottawa as well.
Ottawa is the diplomatic center.
Ottawa is the capital.
That is what I said.
Canadian officials say retaliatory measures will be announced within hours. Prime Minister Trudeau called the U.S. tariffs unwarranted and harmful to workers on both sides of the border.
The twenty billion dollars affects steel, aluminum, softwood lumber, and dairy products.
Trade representatives from both countries are scheduled to brief the press again this afternoon.
In other news from the Commonwealth, the BBC is reporting the Duchess of Sussex may be returning to acting.
According to the BBC, Meghan is in talks for a role in the second season of the Netflix series The Gentlemen, directed by Guy Ritchie.
This would be her first significant acting role since she married Prince Harry in two thousand seventeen.
Two thousand eighteen.
I thought it was the summer.
It was May. Two thousand eighteen.
That sounds right.
The Gentlemen is a crime series set in the British countryside. Guy Ritchie created it based on his two thousand nineteen film of the same name.
Netflix has not confirmed the casting. The second season is expected to begin production later this year.
Both Harry and Meghan are expected to return to the UK in the coming weeks for charity appearances and private family matters.
The couple stepped back from royal duties in two thousand twenty and have been living in California.
British papers are speculating about what role they might take on now that working royal duties are off the table, but nothing has been announced.
The Financial Times led this morning with fiscal concerns mounting in the UK. Several Saturday papers are carrying that story.
The Guardian and the Telegraph are both running front page analysis on government borrowing costs and bond market pressure.
The Times has Meghan on the front page. So does the Mirror.
It is a very divided front page morning in London.
Do you think she will take the role?
I think if Guy Ritchie is asking, it is a serious conversation.
She was very good on Suits.
She was.
Still ahead this morning on KRAK 11 News, a case that has been waiting for an answer for nearly thirty years may finally get one. We will have that story when Criminal Intent continues.
That is in just a few minutes.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good morning. I am Chip Marlowe.
And I am Deb Sarkissian. It is time for the KRAK 11 Blotter, and we have four stories from the Florida Man archives this morning.
Four tributes in one segment. That may be a record.
It is not, but it is a very good showing.
We begin this morning with a story from October of last year, when a New Jersey theme park made a decision that raised questions. The park listed life-sized dinosaur statues for sale on Facebook Marketplace.
Seventy-five feet long. Full scale. The listing did not specify delivery options.
You would need a flatbed truck.
Possibly several flatbed trucks, and a very understanding homeowners association.
Also from last October, a Florida man was arrested after deputies say he attacked them at a Walmart in Flagler County. Prosecutors allege deputies had contacted him to pick up his child, who they say had been trespassing at the store.
The man is accused of attacking the deputies when they made contact. Deputies say the response escalated what was otherwise a routine call.
Also from Florida, back in September of 2024, a man was arrested after police say he burglarized a mini golf course in his underwear. Surveillance video showed the suspect allegedly damaging property at the facility.
Officers say he was wearing only underwear at the time of the alleged burglary. The investigation is ongoing.
The choice of venue raises tactical questions.
It does. And our final Florida Man Tribute this morning takes us back to last summer, when a seagull executed what I can only describe as a precision strike.
A woman was holding her sandwich when the bird swooped down and took it directly out of her hand. She screamed, and then gave chase.
The woman did not recover the sandwich.
No.
That is seventy-one Florida Man Tributes in forty-three weeks.
It is, and the spirit of Florida continues to inspire the nation.
Still ahead this morning, the animal countdown. The sea urchin video has now held first place for thirty-three consecutive hours.
I have watched it nine times.
You still do not know what is happening.
I do not.
ANIMALS
Good morning. This is the KRAK 11 animal countdown.
Three videos, ranked by how many views each one gained in the last two days.
The sea urchin is still in first place.
Thirty-three consecutive hours.
At number three: Baby Deer Trapped On A Freezing Pond. Posted by Sassy. Two point nine million new views.
That video has held third place for four days.
At number two: Why Coyotes And Badgers Hunt Together. Posted by Zack D. Films. Three point four million new views.
YouTube has that one at number one on their own trending chart.
And at number one, unchanged for thirty-three consecutive hours: Sea Urchin. Posted by Nick DiGiovanni. Four point five million new views.
How many times have you watched it now?
Nine.
Do you know what is happening in it yet?
I do not.
That might be why it is still in first place.
All three videos are on the KRAK 11 News Reel. The link is in the description.
Still ahead this morning: a quick look at sports. The Cubs are doing something we have never seen before.
Back in ninety seconds.
A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS
A quick look at sports.
Four scores on the board, and the Brewers are still winning.
They have not lost in nearly a month.
The Brewers beat the Pirates four to one in Pittsburgh, extending their win streak to twenty-four straight games. That is a franchise record and the longest in baseball in thirty-six years.
Pete Crow-Armstrong hit a walk-off single in the Cubs' win over the White Sox, three to two. That is ten consecutive games with a walk-off RBI, extending his own major league record.
Magnus Carlsen defended his chess title at the Esports World Cup in Riyadh. They are calling him the undisputed greatest of all time.
Ohio State opens their season in seven days.
I am aware.
Coming up at the top of the hour on KRAK 11 News, the fallout from tariffs that took effect after midnight. We are back in ninety seconds.
