KRAK 11 NEWS
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. This is KRAK 11 News.
Tonight — a stabbing at a Sikh temple in Canada leaves two injured and one suspect in custody. Police are investigating whether hate played a role.
An Ohio congresswoman files an emergency request to stop President Trump's name from returning to the Kennedy Center. We'll tell you what prompted the filing.
That sea urchin video is still number one on our animal countdown — twenty-eight hours at the top now. Four point three million new views in two days.
You've watched it eight times.
And our sixty-fifth Florida Man Tribute — what is house burping, and does your home need it? That story from January is still making rounds.
We start tonight at The World Desk with that stabbing at a Canadian temple. Police say they're still determining motive.
THE WORLD DESK
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. We have developments from Canada, Britain, and the Premier League opener that settled a question Chip and I have been discussing all afternoon.
It is not settled.
It is now. We begin in Canada, where police have confirmed one person is in custody following this afternoon's stabbing attack at a Sikh temple. Two people were injured in the attack and both are being treated at hospital.
Authorities say they are still investigating whether the attack was motivated by hate. No motive has been disclosed at this hour.
We will continue to follow that as more details become available.
In Britain tonight, homeowners are turning to a building standard from the nineteen-sixties that is keeping houses cool without air conditioning. It is called Passivhaus, and it is growing in popularity as summer temperatures continue to rise across the UK.
The standard uses thick insulation, triple-glazed windows, and airtight construction to maintain indoor temperatures year-round. One family living in a former council house built to the standard says their home stayed comfortable through the entire heatwave last month without turning on a single fan.
That is a council house in Birmingham.
It is not. This one is in Devon.
Which is also in England.
It is.
In Premier League football, Arsenal opened their title defence last night with a three-nil victory over Coventry City. The match marked Coventry's return to the top flight after twenty-five years away.
The defending champions controlled the game from the opening whistle. Arsenal scored twice in the first half and added a third in stoppage time to put the result beyond doubt. It was a commanding performance from a team that looked very comfortable with the pressure of being champions.
Coventry beat Arsenal four-two in their debut two weeks ago.
That was a different match. Coventry won that one on the seventeenth. This match was last night, and Arsenal won three-nil.
So they split the series.
They do not play a series. This is the opening match of a thirty-eight game season. Every team plays every other team twice.
A long season.
For Coventry, the result was disappointing, but manager Mark Robins told reporters after the match that his team learned valuable lessons about what it takes to compete at this level. He said the performance was about more than the result.
His players now know what the top flight demands, and they have thirty-seven games left to show what they can do.
Thirty-seven.
It is a very long season.
Still ahead on KRAK 11 News - a case that has taken six months, four witnesses, and one very determined county prosecutor. We will take you inside the investigation.
That is Criminal Intent, coming up in a few minutes.
Right here on KRAK 11.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good evening. Time now for the KRAK 11 Blotter.
Four stories from Florida tonight.
One of them involves a telephone pole.
We begin with our Florida Man Tribute, and this one is a masterclass in poor decision-making. Back in November 2024, a man in Frostproof called the Polk County Sheriff's Office to report a burglary and battery at his home.
Deputies arrived and did locate evidence of a burglary.
They also located cocaine. In plain view. In the residence of the person who called them.
Sheriff Grady Judd said the suspect should have hidden his cocaine before inviting law enforcement into his home.
Both the man and a teenager were arrested. That is our sixty-seventh Florida Man Tribute in forty-three weeks.
Also from Florida, back in October 2024, a Spring Hill man fled on foot during a traffic stop after deputies found drugs in his vehicle. The pursuit ended when the suspect ran directly into a telephone pole.
The Hernando County Sheriff's Office says the impact brought the foot pursuit to an immediate conclusion. Deputies took the suspect into custody at the base of the pole.
He was charged with possession with intent to sell.
From the wildlife file, back in July of last year, a homeowner in Astor Farms recorded a three-legged alligator moving slowly through his backyard. The video shows the animal navigating the property despite missing its front left leg.
Wildlife officials say alligators can adapt to such injuries and continue to hunt and survive.
The homeowner kept his distance and allowed the animal to pass through undisturbed.
And from the home improvement file, back in January of this year, a Rush University doctor explained a trend called lüften, or house burping, which involves opening windows briefly to exchange indoor air with fresh outdoor air.
The practice originated in Germany and is said to reduce indoor pollutants and improve air quality, particularly in homes with limited ventilation.
The doctor recommends doing this for five to ten minutes a day, even in winter.
Deb, your house does that every time I open the back door.
That is called leaving.
Still ahead tonight, Animals. The sea urchin video remains at number one for the twenty-eighth consecutive hour.
And a baby fox makes its debut at number seven.
ANIMALS
Time now for Animals.
The KRAK 11 animal countdown. Three videos, ranked by how many views they have gained in the last two days.
Not their total. Growth only.
Counted down from three.
Number three is Baby Deer Trapped On A Freezing Pond. Posted by Sassy on the thirteenth of August. Two million, nine hundred and thirteen thousand, two hundred and sixty-three new views in the last two days.
That video has held third place for four days now.
Number two is Why Coyotes And Badgers Hunt Together. Posted by Zack D. Films on the nineteenth of August. Three million, two hundred and ninety thousand, three hundred and twelve new views.
Unchanged since our last count.
And number one, for the twenty-ninth consecutive hour, is Sea Urchin. Posted by Nick DiGiovanni on the nineteenth of August. Four million, three hundred and twenty-six thousand, six hundred and seventy-four new views.
You have watched that video eight times.
I have.
What keeps bringing you back?
It is a very well-made video.
All three of those are on the KRAK 11 News Reel. The link is in the description.
Still ahead tonight, a quick look at sports. The Brewers have won nineteen straight and Pete Crow-Armstrong has walked off five games in a row. We will have the details in just a few minutes.
A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS
A Quick Look at Sports.
The scoreboard tonight is extremely satisfying.
You have been looking forward to this all day.
Pete Crow-Armstrong has done it again. The Cubs outfielder hit his sixth consecutive walk-off RBI in Chicago's five to four win over the White Sox tonight. Six straight games decided by one man.
That is not a streak. That is a force of nature.
The Brewers beat the Pirates six to two in Milwaukee and have now won twenty straight games. Twenty. That is a new franchise record and the longest active winning streak in baseball.
Magnus Carlsen defended his world chess title at the Esports World Cup in Riyadh yesterday. He beat India's Gukesh Dommaraju four and a half to three and a half in the rapid tiebreak.
Ohio State is ranked number four in the Yahoo Sports preseason college football Top 25. The Buckeyes open their season September second against Akron.
Thirty-three years I have watched them.
And you will watch them again in two weeks. That is sports. Still ahead, the next KRAK 11 News at the top of the hour. We will see you then.
