KRAK 11 NEWS
Good evening, Wexler County. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. This is KRAK 11 News at seven.
Coming up this hour on KRAK 11 — The World Desk, where Arsenal's title swagger meets Coventry on opening night and somebody walked away embarrassed.
Criminal Intent, where thirty-nine pythons tried to cross into Mexico back in March and we are saluting that man properly. Animals, where the sea urchin is still number one for the twenty-seventh straight hour.
And A Quick Look At Sports, where eight people are dead in a plane crash at a remote Alaskan military radar site.
Twenty-seven hours.
I have watched it seven times.
We start with The World Desk in just a moment — Arsenal thought they had this one, and Coventry had other ideas.
THE WORLD DESK
Good evening. Welcome back to KRAK 11 News.
The World Desk tonight, and we are starting with football.
English football.
The only kind they play there.
Arsenal opened their title defence last night with a performance that reminded everyone why they won it. They beat Coventry four-two on opening night.
The defending champions came out with what one analyst called swagger, and Coventry had no answer for it.
This is after Coventry beat them earlier in the season.
That was last year, Chip. That was the season Arsenal finished as runners-up. This is the season they won the title.
And now they are defending it.
Successfully, so far.
Across the Atlantic, university students in the United Kingdom are making a different calculation this fall. More of them are planning to live at home during term, citing what they describe as insane living costs.
One student told the BBC she worries about missing the full university experience, but says she has no choice. Rent and food costs in university cities have climbed faster than student loans can cover.
How far is the commute for most of them?
The article does not specify distances, but the United Kingdom is considerably smaller than the United States. A two-hour commute there can cross three counties.
So it is manageable.
It is necessary.
We have an update tonight on the El Niño system developing over the Pacific. The Met Office in London now says it could be the strongest on record.
That is stronger than their previous forecast, which we reported an hour ago. They now expect the system to bring drought to some regions and severe flooding to others, with effects lasting into early next year.
This is the Pacific system.
It is, though its effects are global. Australia, Southeast Asia, parts of South America and East Africa are all expected to see significant weather disruptions.
But not the Atlantic.
The Atlantic will feel it. El Niño typically suppresses hurricane activity in the Atlantic and increases rainfall along the southern United States.
So we are in it.
We are in its area of influence, yes.
In Scotland, the man arrested yesterday in connection with bomb threats aboard a ferry has now been charged. Police Scotland confirmed this afternoon that charges have been filed.
The twenty-three-year-old is the same passenger who was rescued from the water earlier in the incident. The ferry was evacuated. Police determined the threats were not credible.
He made the threat after they pulled him out?
The timeline has not been disclosed. We know he was in the water, he was rescued, and at some point aboard the CalMac ferry he made bomb threats.
What a way to say thank you.
The charges are pending.
If you are watching this on YouTube, it would mean a great deal to us if you subscribed. A station this size notices every single one.
Still ahead tonight on KRAK 11 News, a case that took an unusual turn when the suspect made a request the court was not expecting. That is coming up next on Criminal Intent.
Stay with us.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. We begin tonight with the KRAK 11 Florida Man Tribute, because the Sunshine State continues to provide.
We have three stories from the archives tonight. All from Florida. All from March.
Two from last year, one from this year.
Back in March of this year, United States Customs and Border Protection officers at the Pharr International Bridge selected a tractor-trailer for what they call a routine inspection.
Inside: thirty-nine live pythons. The driver was attempting to cross into Mexico. With snakes.
Officers say the driver was arrested. They did not say what the driver planned to do with thirty-nine pythons in Mexico.
Also back in March, but of last year, deputies in Marion County, Florida, arrested a man accused of running a methamphetamine distribution business out of a tent behind a discount store.
The tent contained narcotics, paraphernalia, and what investigators described as a fully operational distribution network. The man was charged with multiple felonies.
Prosecutors allege he was living and working from the same tent.
No overhead.
That is one interpretation.
Also in March of last year, a Tampa man stole a pair of boots from a store in the Florida Keys, then led deputies on what the Monroe County Sheriff's Office called an extended pursuit through extremely difficult terrain.
He ran through murky water, hid in mangroves, and ultimately clung to a pylon beneath a bridge, where deputies located him and made the arrest.
Police said he was wearing the boots at the time of his arrest.
He committed to the theft.
That is sixty-six Florida Man Tributes in forty-three weeks.
The state provides, Deb.
Still ahead tonight: the sea urchin video has now held the number one spot on the KRAK 11 animal countdown for twenty-seven consecutive hours.
I have watched it eight times.
Animals, in a few minutes on KRAK 11 News.
ANIMALS
Time now for Animals, the Good News Desk.
Three videos tonight, ranked by how many views each one gained in the last two days.
Starting at number three.
Number three is Baby Deer Trapped On A Freezing Pond, posted by Sassy on the thirteenth of August. Two million, nine hundred and one thousand new views.
That video has held third place for four days now.
Number two is Why Coyotes And Badgers Hunt Together, posted by Zack D. Films on the nineteenth. Three million, two hundred and sixty-six thousand new views.
YouTube's own trending chart has that one at number one.
And number one, leading our count for twenty-seven consecutive hours, is Sea Urchin, posted by Nick DiGiovanni. Four million, two hundred and sixty-one thousand new views.
You have now watched it eight times.
It is very calming.
All three are on the KRAK 11 News Reel. The link is in the description.
If you are watching this on YouTube, a subscription costs you nothing and it helps a small station keep the lights on.
Coming up in just a few minutes, A Quick Look at Sports. The Brewers are eighteen and counting, and Pete Crow-Armstrong has done something no Cub has ever done four games running.
That is next on KRAK 11 News.
A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS
A quick look at sports.
Four scores tonight and every single one of them is a streak or a record.
You love a streak.
The Milwaukee Brewers beat the Cardinals five to three this afternoon, extending their franchise record winning streak to nineteen straight games.
Pete Crow-Armstrong did it again for the Cubs, a walk-off single in the ninth against the White Sox. That is five consecutive games with a walk-off RBI.
Magnus Carlsen defended his world chess title at the Esports World Cup in Riyadh, defeating Hikaru Nakamura in the final.
And Yahoo Sports has released their preseason college football Top Twenty-Five. Ohio State is ranked number four.
Thirty-two years.
You have been watching them for thirty-two years.
Still ahead, the next KRAK 11 News at the top of the hour. We will have more on that plane crash in Alaska and the latest from the Air Force investigation.
That is coming up in just a few minutes. Thank you for watching KRAK 11 News.
