KRAK 11 NEWS
Good afternoon. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. We have a full hour ahead. The World Desk starts us off with Meghan in talks for a Netflix role — her first since the marriage.
We have a Florida Man tribute from back in May — the stargazer fish, fifty volts and a face that will stay with you.
Animals has the sea urchin video still holding first place — twenty-two hours now.
I have watched it six times.
And A Quick Look at Sports celebrates National Senior Citizens' Day with five stories of people who did not slow down.
That is the hour. Still ahead on The World Desk — the series is called The Gentlemen, and the BBC understands talks are ongoing.
We start in two minutes.
THE WORLD DESK
Good afternoon. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. We have entertainment news from Britain this afternoon, an update on weather that could affect the end of the year, and tennis news that changes the US Open considerably.
It's a big day across the Atlantic.
It is. Let's begin.
The BBC is reporting that Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, is in talks for a role in the Netflix series The Gentlemen. This would be her first significant acting role since her marriage to Prince Harry in twenty-eighteen.
The Gentlemen. That's the series based on the Guy Ritchie film.
It is. Netflix ordered the series last year. No word yet on which role she's discussing or when production would begin.
Netflix has been good to them.
They have. The couple signed a production deal with the company in twenty-twenty.
Now to weather, and the Met Office is updating its forecast for the El Niño developing over the Pacific. They are now warning it could affect global weather patterns through the end of the year.
That's the Pacific system that starts near Hawaii and moves east toward California.
It develops off the coast of South America and moves west across the Pacific. The Met Office says this one is likely to be the strongest in living memory.
South America. Of course.
The forecast now extends impacts through December, with potential disruptions to rainfall and temperature patterns across the globe. That is six more months to keep an eye on.
We'll stay on that.
A quick update on tennis. We reported earlier that world number one Jannik Sinner withdrew from the US Open with a knee injury. Late this morning, Britain's Jack Draper also pulled out of the tournament.
That's two top players in the same day.
It is. Draper cited a shoulder injury. Both withdrawals leave the men's draw wide open. The tournament begins in Flushing Meadows in two weeks.
That changes everything.
If you're watching on YouTube this afternoon, we'd be glad if you subscribed. A station our size counts every one.
And tell us what you think in the comments. We read them. Deb reads them at a reasonable hour.
I read them when the sun is up.
Still ahead this afternoon on KRAK Eleven News, Criminal Intent. We have new details on a case out of Springfield that has taken a very unusual turn.
A suspect who turned himself in, then changed his story three times in two hours.
We'll have that in just a few minutes.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good afternoon. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. Time now for the KRAK 11 Blotter, and our fifty-ninth Florida Man Tribute in forty-three weeks.
We are going back through the archives this afternoon. January was a remarkable month.
It was eventful.
Back in January of this year, a Louisiana woman told deputies she was trying to be a mermaid. She was skinny-dipping in a neighbor's pond when law enforcement arrived.
Authorities say when a deputy attempted to detain her, she allegedly became violent.
She now faces multiple charges. I have questions about the pond.
It was not her pond.
Also back in January, a Pennsylvania man is accused of robbing graves in Delaware County. Authorities say they discovered human remains at his property and corpses hanging from the ceiling.
Jonathan Gerlach has been charged. The investigation is ongoing.
Astronomers in January also confirmed that the comet 3I/ATLAS is not an alien spaceship. They searched for signals as low as a hundred milliwatts, which is about the strength of a cellphone.
Scientists say it is probably just a comet.
I appreciate the clarity.
They were thorough.
And back in May of this year, marine biologists catalogued the Stargazer fish, which lurks on the ocean floor and has electric organs capable of delivering up to fifty volts.
It is known for its unsettling appearance and ambush tactics.
Fifty volts is more than enough to ruin your afternoon.
It would.
Still ahead this afternoon on KRAK 11 News: the sea urchin video has now led our animal countdown for twenty-two consecutive hours. We will tell you what is climbing behind it.
Animals is next.
ANIMALS
Welcome back to KRAK 11 News. It is time for the Good News Desk.
Three videos this afternoon, ranked by how many views they gained in the last forty-eight hours.
We start at number three.
Baby Deer Trapped On A Freezing Pond. Posted by Sassy on the thirteenth. Two point eight million new views in two days. It has held third place for four days now.
That video has fifteen and a half million views total. Still climbing.
At number two, Why Coyotes And Badgers Hunt Together. Posted by Zack D. Films on the nineteenth. Three point one million new views in two days.
YouTube's own trending chart has it at number one.
You have watched that one thirteen times.
It is interesting behavior.
I know.
And at number one, unchanged for twenty-two hours, Sea Urchin. Posted by Nick DiGiovanni on the nineteenth. Three point nine million new views in two days. Five point two million total.
That is the video you have now watched six times.
I find it calming.
All three videos are posted on the KRAK 11 News Reel. The link is in the description.
And from the archive this afternoon, This Is the Only Animal That Terrified Steve Irwin. The uploader says it is footage of Irwin handling a hippopotamus, which he called the most dangerous animal in Africa.
According to the uploader, Irwin said the hippo was unpredictable and aggressive, and he approached it with more caution than he showed with crocodiles.
That clip is also on the News Reel.
If you are watching on YouTube, we would be glad if you subscribed. It costs you nothing and it makes a real difference to a station this size.
Still ahead this afternoon, A Quick Look At Sports. The Brewers have now won thirteen straight games, and we will tell you what Aaron Judge did last night.
That is next on KRAK 11 News.
A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS
A quick look at sports.
The Brewers are at fourteen straight wins now.
You said that like it was your team.
Fourteen in a row is everybody's team, Deb. Magnus Carlsen has defended his chess title at the twenty twenty-six Esports World Cup in Riyadh. The Norwegian grandmaster took the championship in the rapid format.
Honda has admitted it only realized the full scale of its Formula One power unit problems in January of this year. The manufacturer acknowledged significant development delays ahead of the new technical regulations.
The Cubs beat the White Sox in the tenth inning last night. Pete Crow-Armstrong drove in the winning run with a walk-off single.
Coming up at the top of the hour, road closures in Wexler County that are going to change your Friday commute. That is the next KRAK 11 News, in just a few minutes.
Thank you for watching.
