KRAK 11 NEWS
Good afternoon. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. This is KRAK 11 News at one o'clock.
Coming up this hour: The World Desk — world number one Jannik Sinner is out of the US Open. So is Britain's Jack Draper. Both withdrew today with injuries.
Criminal Intent — back in October of last year, a corrections officer in Travis County was fired and charged for selling chicken wings to an inmate. Our fifty-seventh Florida Man Tribute.
Texas, actually.
Florida in spirit. Animals — the sea urchin video has now been number one on our countdown for twenty-one straight hours. And A Quick Look at Sports — Canada's trade deadline with the United States is approaching, and Manitoba's premier says his country should fight.
All of that still ahead on KRAK 11 News. But first — The World Desk, and two players the tennis world was counting on to show up in New York will not be there.
That is next.
THE WORLD DESK
Good afternoon, I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. You have been reading about the weather pattern.
I have been reading about the weather pattern extensively.
I can tell.
We begin this afternoon with motorsport. George Russell has taken pole position for tomorrow's Dutch Grand Prix sprint race.
Russell's Mercedes will start ahead of Lando Norris in second and Charles Leclerc in third. The sprint race takes place tomorrow morning before qualifying for Sunday's main event.
That is in the Netherlands.
It is. At the Circuit Zandvoort, just outside Amsterdam.
Which is near Rotterdam.
The other direction. It is north of Amsterdam, on the coast.
Near the sea.
That is correct.
The United Kingdom has marked its first national day for victims and survivors of terrorism. Survivors gathered in London for the memorial event, which honors those affected by attacks.
The day will be observed annually going forward. Officials say the memorial provides space for reflection and remembrance for families and communities across the country.
That is in Britain.
It is.
And in Moscow, preparations are underway for Russian Flag Day tomorrow, but the celebration comes as drivers across the capital are facing hours-long waits in fuel queues.
The shortage is one of the clearest signs yet of the ongoing war's impact on daily life in Russia. Petrol availability has dropped significantly in recent weeks despite government efforts to manage supply.
That is near the Kremlin.
It is happening across the city. The queues are being reported in multiple districts throughout Moscow.
But the Kremlin is there.
The Kremlin is in Moscow, yes.
I think we work very well together on these international stories.
We do.
If you are watching us on YouTube, a subscription costs you nothing and it means a great deal to a station this size.
Still ahead this afternoon on KRAK 11 News, Criminal Intent. A case in Wexler County that has taken an unexpected turn, and the sheriff's office is asking for the public's help.
We will have that in just a moment.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good afternoon. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. Time now for the Blotter, and we have four stories from the archives this afternoon that prove crime never stops being strange.
These are Florida Man Tributes. None of them happened this week. All of them happened.
We begin with contraband.
Travis County, Texas, back in October of last year. A corrections officer is fired, then charged, after allegedly smuggling contraband into the facility. The contraband: chicken wings.
The sheriff's office says the officer accepted payment from an inmate in exchange for bringing in the wings. He was terminated and faces charges.
I have questions about the logistics.
You always do.
Also back in November of last year, a woman in Thailand arrived at a temple for cremation. Staff placed her coffin in the chamber. And then she knocked.
Temple workers opened the coffin to find the woman moving and breathing. She was transported to hospital and survived.
Timing matters.
It does.
North Carolina, also November of last year. A driver calls nine-one-one to report damage to her windshield. The damage was caused by a cat. The cat was delivered by a bald eagle.
The driver told the dispatcher, and I am quoting here, 'You may not believe me.' The cat survived. The windshield did not.
That is a story you tell for the rest of your life and nobody believes you.
Unless you have the insurance claim.
And finally this afternoon from the Blotter, a burglary case solved not by forensics or witness testimony, but by cake. Back in November of last year, a man broke into a home, ate a slice of cake, and left a cigarette butt at the scene.
Police say DNA from the cigarette connected Abeeb Hussain to the burglary. He has been arrested.
Never leave the scene with evidence in your stomach.
Or your fingerprints on the fork.
That is fifty-eight Florida Man Tributes in forty-three weeks, and still ahead this afternoon: Animals. A video involving something with too many legs.
Or not enough.
We will be right back.
ANIMALS
This is Animals.
The sea urchin is still winning.
Twenty-one hours now.
I have watched it six times and I still do not understand why three million people needed to see it in the last two days.
The sea urchin video has gained three million eight hundred thirteen thousand new views in the last forty-seven hours. Five million one hundred twenty-five thousand total.
It has been number one since yesterday afternoon.
Number two is coyotes and badgers hunting together. Three million eighty thousand new views in the last forty-seven hours. I have now watched that one thirteen times.
You said twelve last hour.
I watched it again during the break.
The baby deer rescued from the freezing pond is at number three. Two million eight hundred eleven thousand new views. Fifteen million four hundred seventy-three thousand total.
That one has held third place for four days.
It is a very good rescue.
Number four is a video titled Check For Context. One million four hundred fifteen thousand new views. We checked for context.
What is the context?
YouTube files it under pets and animals and that is all we know.
Number five is a video titled Wait Until He Realizes. One million two hundred seventeen thousand new views.
Realizes what?
Also filed under pets and animals. Also no further detail available.
That is a mysterious countdown this afternoon.
The animals are doing well. We simply do not know which animals they are.
Still ahead this afternoon, a quick look at sports. The Brewers have now won twelve straight, and Aaron Judge hit two more.
That is next on KRAK 11 News.
A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS
Good afternoon. A quick look at sports — the KRAK 11 scoreboard.
Results only.
Results only. Starting with the Cubs.
The Cubs walked it off against the White Sox yesterday — Pete Crow-Armstrong with the RBI single in the tenth. Cubs win four to three.
Ten innings and one swing.
The Brewers beat the Pirates six to two — that is thirteen straight wins for Milwaukee. They are not slowing down.
And Aaron Judge hit his forty-second home run of the season — Yankees over the Orioles, nine to seven. Judge now has forty-three RBI.
Still ahead — the next KRAK 11 News, at the top of the hour. We will see you then.
We will.
