KRAK 11 NEWS
Good morning, Wexler County. It is eleven o'clock and this is KRAK 11 News. I am Chip Marlowe.
And I am Deb Sarkissian. This hour: The World Desk, where Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes faces a ten-game ban after clashes following the World Cup final.
Criminal Intent brings you a helicopter crew stranded on an island in the middle of Lake Jesup, surrounded by alligators, until an airboat captain came to help.
In Animals, the sea urchin video has now led our countdown for nineteen consecutive hours. It gained another three point seven million views in the last two days.
And A Quick Look at Sports, where prosecutors say Penn State fraternity members packaged cocaine as part of initiation.
That is a very quick look at sports.
The World Desk is coming up in just a moment, and we begin with a ban that will keep one player off the pitch until well into next season.
THE WORLD DESK
Good morning. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. The World Desk this morning, and we have substantial sports news from FIFA, a withdrawal at the top of men's tennis, and developments in South Africa.
The Swiss fire search continues as well.
It does. We begin this morning with football. FIFA has handed down a ten-game ban to Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes for his role in clashes with Spanish players immediately following the World Cup final.
That is a substantial penalty for what happened after the match itself had already concluded.
FIFA's disciplinary committee reviewed video from the on-field altercations. The ban covers international fixtures and takes effect immediately.
In tennis this morning, world number one Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the upcoming US Open with a knee injury.
Sinner's withdrawal leaves the men's draw wide open. The tournament begins in Flushing Meadows in two weeks, and his medical team says the injury needs rest, not surgery.
That is good news for the long term.
It is. And in South Africa, corruption charges have been dropped against the country's police intelligence chief and several other officials following a two-year investigation.
This was related to the appointment of a civilian to a senior position in crime intelligence near Johannesburg.
Within crime intelligence. The National Prosecuting Authority declined to provide a detailed explanation for the withdrawal. The officials had faced potential prison time if convicted.
Now, we reported earlier this morning on the search continuing in Switzerland after a fire in an Alpine town. That search is still active at this hour.
It is. Five people remain missing. Eight others were injured and are being treated at hospitals in the region. Local police say the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
Crews have been working through the debris since early this morning. The town is quite small, and officials believe they will have a clearer picture by the end of the day.
And in Moscow, the capital is preparing to celebrate Russian Flag Day tomorrow, but the reality on the ground continues to reflect the impact of the ongoing war.
This is near the Kremlin.
In the capital. Drivers are waiting hours in fuel queues. Officials say there is no shortage of patriotism, but they have not addressed the fuel situation directly.
That is a telling omission.
It is.
That is the World Desk this morning.
Still ahead, Criminal Intent. A case that has been unfolding for months has reached a significant development, and we will have that for you in just a few minutes.
We will be right back.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good morning. This is Criminal Intent.
We have a Florida Man Tribute this morning that involves socks.
Just socks?
Twenty-two pairs of them. And two hundred lizards.
We begin this morning with our fifty-fifth Florida Man Tribute in forty-three weeks. A man was arrested at Tokyo's Narita Airport after customs officers discovered two hundred lizards stuffed inside twenty-two pairs of socks in his suitcase.
That is approximately nine lizards per pair, according to Japanese authorities. An X-ray scan revealed what one customs official described as an unusual density pattern.
The suspect has been charged with violating Japan's customs and wildlife protection laws. Police say the lizards have been handed over to wildlife authorities and all survived the journey.
Back in May of this year, an Iowa man sued Nintendo after being denied Pokémon Professor certification despite scoring one hundred percent on the exam. Court documents allege discrimination based on age and geography.
A perfect score.
The plaintiff alleges he completed all required training and passed the certification exam with a perfect score, but was informed by Nintendo representatives that the program was not available in his region.
Nintendo has not yet filed a response. The case is pending in federal court in Iowa.
Back in June of this year, Uber released its annual Lost and Found Index. Among the most surprising items riders left behind: an ankle monitor, a set of grillz, and human hair.
How do you forget an ankle monitor?
The report does not specify whether it was still attached to the ankle.
That is a detail I would like to know.
The report also noted that viral Labubu plushies were among the most commonly forgotten items this year, along with smartphones, wallets, and keys.
And back in July of this year, an airboat captain on Lake Jesup near Orlando became one of the first responders when a helicopter crash-landed on an island in the middle of alligator-infested waters.
Lake Jesup is home to thousands of alligators. The captain reached the crew within minutes and transported them safely to shore before emergency services arrived.
The captain described it as a once-in-a-lifetime experience. No injuries were reported.
Still ahead this morning on KRAK 11 News: the sea urchin video has now led our animal countdown for nineteen consecutive hours and passed five million views.
Animals is next.
ANIMALS
Time now for Animals.
The sea urchin is still leading the countdown.
Nineteen straight hours at number one.
It has now passed five million total views.
The sea urchin video posted by Nick DiGiovanni has five million twenty-seven thousand views total. It gained three point seven million of those in the last forty-six hours.
Number two on the KRAK 11 animal countdown is the coyote and badger video. Three million new views in the last two days. YouTube's own trending chart has it ranked number one.
I have now watched that video twelve times.
The baby deer rescue is number three. Two point seven million new views, fifteen point four million total. That video went up on August thirteenth and it is still climbing.
That is a very good video.
Number four is posted by Benji Void. One point three million new views in the last two days. YouTube has it ranked number six on their trending chart.
And number five is a video called Wait Until He Realizes, posted by Hopeless Core. One point one million new views since Sunday.
The bobcat video is off the countdown.
It was number five for fifteen days.
It was a very good run.
If you are watching on YouTube, a subscription costs nothing and helps us put together this countdown every morning.
Coming up in just a few minutes on KRAK 11 News, A Quick Look At Sports. The Brewers have now won nine straight games and Aaron Judge is at forty home runs for the season.
We will be right back.
A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS
A quick look at sports — the Krak 11 Scoreboard.
You have been watching chess again.
I have. And I am prepared to defend that choice.
Magnus Carlsen defended his chess title at the Esports World Cup in Riyadh — the twenty-six Esports World Cup, not the soccer one — beating India's Gukesh Dommaraju in the final.
The Yankees beat the Rockies six to four. Aaron Judge hit his forty-first home run of the season — one more than he had at this time last year.
The Brewers won their tenth straight game, beating the Nationals four to two. They are now twenty-one games over five hundred.
And Ohio State opens their season ranked number four in the Yahoo Sports preseason poll. They play Akron on Saturday.
Coming up at the top of the hour — breaking news from the county line.
We will see you then.
