Rundown
KRAK 11 NEWS
Good morning. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. This is KRAK 11 News, Fairmont's number one rated newscast.
This hour on KRAK 11: The World Desk, where the United States has hit a debt milestone that has economists asking hard questions about what comes next.
Criminal Intent brings you a Florida Man Tribute — back in March of this year, a septic tank, a U-Haul truck, and two attempts caught on camera.
A septic tank.
Animals, where a sea urchin video has now led our countdown for thirteen hours. And A Quick Look at Sports, where jurors heard testimony this week about what happened the night Tupac Shakur was killed.
The World Desk is coming up in just a few minutes — the alarm bells ringing over the U.S. economy, and why this week's debt milestone has analysts concerned.
Stay with us.
THE WORLD DESK
Good morning. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. The overnight wires came in heavy this morning.
Three separate stories out of Europe, the debt milestone out of Washington, and the Canal Authority filed an update at four this morning.
You were reading it at four this morning.
I like to be prepared.
We begin with the American economy, which hit a significant debt milestone this week. Economists are asking how worried we should be about the world's largest economy as new figures show debt levels at historic highs.
The milestone involves federal borrowing, which funds everything from infrastructure to defense spending.
Analysts say the concern is not just the number itself, but the rate at which it's growing and what that means for interest payments in future budgets.
No immediate crisis is being forecast, but the alarm bells are ringing in several quarters.
To the Panama Canal now, where we have been following the shipping story for several weeks. The Canal Authority filed new guidance overnight confirming it will further reduce the number of vessels allowed through each day.
This is because of the drought affecting the entire region.
Low rainfall caused by El Niño. The canal relies on freshwater from lakes that feed the locks, and those levels have dropped significantly.
This affects shipping between the Pacific and the Atlantic.
Between the Pacific and the Caribbean Sea, yes. The canal connects Panama's coasts.
Which are on two different oceans.
They are.
The Met Office in London has now said this El Niño event could be the strongest in living memory. Scientists there are warning it will likely push global temperatures higher in twenty twenty-seven.
They are calling it an unprecedented event.
And they are warning the United Kingdom specifically to prepare for a wetter, stormier autumn as a result of the pattern shift.
The forecast goes out two years.
It does. Climate models can project that far when the forcing mechanism is this strong.
In the United Kingdom, the Home Office says French authorities have intercepted hundreds of potential small boat crossings in the English Channel this summer.
The Home Office credits new tactics deployed by French border forces, including increased patrols along the northern coastline.
The crossings have been a persistent issue for both governments.
They have. And officials say this summer's interception rate is the highest on record for the joint operation.
That is the World Desk this morning.

Still ahead on KRAK 11 News, Criminal Intent. A case that has been building quietly for months, and this week it went to a grand jury.
The charges were unsealed yesterday afternoon.
We will have that in a few minutes.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good morning. Time for the KRAK 11 Blotter.
How many Florida Man Tributes are we at now?
Forty-four in forty-two weeks. This morning we add three more.
We begin with a case from back in March of this year. Deputies in Marion County say a man tried twice to steal a septic tank using a U-Haul truck from a construction site in Dunnellon.
Both attempts were caught on camera.
The suspect allegedly returned to the same site, loaded the tank and other construction materials into the rental truck, and was arrested after the second run.
Also back in March, a Southwest Florida man went outside in Batman pajamas and held down a burglary suspect until officers arrived, police say.
Police say the man heard a noise, went to investigate, and detained the suspect in his front yard.
The pajamas were confirmed.
Back in February of this year, a Lee County man allegedly slammed his Jaguar sports car into the back of a school bus, then was arrested hours later for battery on a woman at his residence, deputies say.
Deputies say no children were injured in the crash.
And back in July of this year, a nurse in Oregon was impaled by a pole during a hike and walked ten miles to reach help.
The woman told reporters she fell on a small tree limb that went through her torso. She removed it herself and hiked out to the trailhead.
She is recovering.
That is the Blotter.
If you are watching this morning and you have not subscribed, it does help. It costs you nothing and it means a great deal to a station our size.
Coming up this morning, Animals.
The sea urchin video has now led the KRAK 11 animal countdown for thirteen consecutive hours.
That is a record.
In a moment.
ANIMALS
Time now for the good news desk.
The sea urchin is still in first place.
Fourteen hours.
And the bobcat has now been at number five for two full weeks.
The KRAK 11 animal countdown tracks the fastest-growing videos in the last forty hours. The sea urchin video posted by Nick DiGiovanni six days ago has gained three million one hundred eighty-three thousand new views. Four and a half million total.
Number two is a singing video. Three million new views in forty hours. Thirteen million total. Posted by Lumi three weeks ago.
The coyote and badger video is at number three. Two point seven million new views. Three point three million total. Posted by Zack D. Films on Monday.
YouTube's own trending chart has that one at number three.
I have now watched it eight times.
I am aware.
The baby deer on the frozen pond is at number four. Two point six million new views. Fifteen million total. Posted by Sassy two weeks ago. YouTube has it at number two.
And the bobcat stopping cars on the highway is still at number five. One point four million new views. Six and a half million total.
Fourteen consecutive days at number five.
People like that bobcat.
Coming up this morning - a quick look at sports, including a chess champion defending his title for the third year running.
Stay with KRAK 11.
A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS
A quick look at sports.
You have been watching boxing highlights since four this morning.
It was a good night in Orlando.
Amanda Serrano knocked out Danila Ramos in the fourth round last night. That is her forty-seventh career knockout — one away from the women's boxing record.
She said afterward she is dedicating the next one to every girl who was told she could not.
Magnus Carlsen defended his chess title at the Esports World Cup in Riyadh yesterday for the third consecutive year. He beat Hikaru Nakamura three games to one in the final.
The Cubs beat the White Sox last night in Chicago, six to five in the tenth. Pete Crow-Armstrong drove in the winning run — his third walk-off RBI this season, which ties a Cubs rookie record set in nineteen-oh-two.
A hundred and twenty-four years is a long time to wait for company.
Coming up at the top of the hour — the Wexler County Sheriff gives an update on the search we have been following all morning. That is next on KRAK 11 News.
