KRAK 11 NEWS
Good evening. This is KRAK 11 News. I am Chip Marlowe.
And I am Deb Sarkissian. Coming up this hour: the World Desk, where the Met Office is calling the El Niño now forming the strongest in living memory.
Criminal Intent with a Florida Man Tribute from back in June, when an emu led Maryland state troopers on a three-hour highway chase, survived being hit by a vehicle, and kept running.
Animals, where a sea urchin video has now led our countdown for seven hours straight.
And A Quick Look at Sports, where we ask what happened to Harry and Meghan's American dream.
That is not sports.
Still ahead tonight on the World Desk: scientists say twenty twenty-seven is very likely to be the hottest year ever recorded, and this El Niño began forming four months ahead of schedule. We have the details in a few minutes.
THE WORLD DESK
Good evening. You are watching KRAK 11 News.
We have six stories from four continents tonight.
Two of them you have heard us cover earlier. Both have new details.
We begin in Indonesia.
A Swiss tourist has been sentenced to three months in jail for insulting one of Bali's most sacred holidays.
The twenty-six-year-old posted an expletive-laden message about Nyepi, the Day of Silence, which is observed across the island with a complete ban on activity, light, and noise.
The court said his social media post showed disrespect for a religious practice that has been observed there for centuries.
Bali is part of the Indonesian archipelago.
It is. Just south of Borneo.
Near Singapore.
Singapore is about seven hundred miles northwest.
Same general region.
The Western Hemisphere. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced new sanctions targeting Cuban government entities, including the island's construction ministry and an international socialist institute.
The Treasury Department says the measures are intended to limit the Cuban government's ability to finance operations that undermine democratic movements in Latin America.
This is the latest in a series of sanctions going back to the embargo in the sixties.
Nineteen sixty-two. These are the first Cuba sanctions announced under the current administration.
Cuba is ninety miles from Florida.
It is. Ninety miles south of Key West.
The United Kingdom now. Sources close to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have not denied reports that Meghan Markle has been offered an acting role in a UK-based production.
The Duchess has not appeared in a dramatic role since leaving the series Suits in twenty seventeen, the year before her marriage to Prince Harry.
No details yet on what the role would be.
No. The speculation follows reports that the couple is considering spending more time in the UK after several years based in California.
She was very good on that show.
She was.
Weather. The El Niño pattern we have been tracking continues to grow across the equatorial Pacific. The Met Office has upgraded its classification to unprecedented event.
That is new language. They say there is now a very high probability that twenty twenty-seven will break the global temperature record.
That would be the third record in five years.
It would. The system is already producing significant rainfall across parts of South America and extreme drought conditions in Southeast Asia and Australia.
If you are watching us on YouTube and you have not yet subscribed, we would be grateful if you did. A station this size genuinely feels the difference.
It costs you nothing and it helps us a great deal.
Still ahead on KRAK 11 News, Criminal Intent is next. A Florida man is facing federal charges after trying to pay for a luxury car with a counterfeit check for over two hundred thousand dollars.
The dealership noticed.
They did. That is next.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good evening, Wexler County. This is Criminal Intent.
We have four items tonight from across the country, and I promise you the emu story is worth the wait.
It is a very determined bird.
Back in June of this year, Maryland state troopers responded to a call about an escaped emu on a state highway. What followed was a three-hour pursuit, multiple capture attempts, and one very determined bird.
The emu survived being struck by a vehicle and kept running.
The helicopter footage we do not have would show the emu maintaining speeds of up to thirty miles per hour through rush hour traffic.
Police said the bird was eventually contained.
This is our thirty-fifth Florida Man Tribute in thirty-five weeks.
Also back in May of this year, a woman dining with family at a lakeside restaurant in South Carolina was killed when a sudden microburst tore a patio umbrella from its base.
Authorities said the umbrella struck the fifty-six-year-old woman at Lake Marion. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Our thoughts are with her family.
Back in April of this year, a Rhode Island town found itself with an unusual visitor at two in the morning. A person wearing a white robe and pointed hood, resembling a member of the Ku Klux Klan, was recorded walking through a residential neighborhood.
Police said the individual has not been identified.
And back in June of last year, Pinellas County deputies say a man paid three hundred dollars for services at a Florida club. When he did not receive what he believed he had paid for, he called nine-one-one to file a complaint.
The services in question, prosecutors allege, were sexual in nature.
Deputies responded to the call and arrested the man after determining he had attempted to solicit prostitution.
He was charged and released on bond.
That is the blotter.
Still ahead tonight, the sea urchin video is now at seven hours on top of the countdown and showing no signs of slowing down.
Animals, in a few minutes.
You are watching KRAK 11 News.
ANIMALS
It is time for Animals.
The KRAK 11 animal countdown, which ranks by how many views a video has gained in the last thirty-four hours, not by total views.
Seven hours at number one for the sea urchin.
That is a real run.
Number one tonight is the sea urchin video. Two million, nine hundred and two thousand, eight hundred and two new views in the last thirty-four hours. Four million, two hundred and fifteen thousand, six hundred and one in total.
Posted by Nick DiGiovanni on the nineteenth. YouTube has it at number fourteen on their own chart.
Number two, a baby deer trapped on a freezing pond. Two million, five hundred and forty-four thousand, three hundred and twelve new views. Fifteen million, two hundred and five thousand, five hundred and eighty-six in total.
YouTube has that one at number two.
Number three is why coyotes and badgers hunt together. Two million, five hundred and twenty thousand, eight hundred and eighty-one new views. Three million total. Posted by Zack D. Films on the nineteenth.
I have now watched that video four times.
It is genuinely interesting.
Number four is a video titled hashtag singing. Two million, three hundred and six thousand, three hundred and one new views. Twelve million, three hundred and eighteen thousand, one hundred and fifteen total. YouTube files it under Pets and Animals and we are treating it as such.
And number five is the bobcat stopping cars. One million, two hundred and ten thousand, two hundred new views. Six million, three hundred and sixty-one thousand, nine hundred and eight total.
Thirteen consecutive days at number five.
That is loyalty from the viewers.
It is a good bobcat.
Coming up in just a few minutes, A Quick Look At Sports. The Cubs took the series, the Yankees won their fourth straight, and Arsenal got the winner in the eighty-third minute. That is next on KRAK 11 News.
A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS
A quick look at sports.
Four scores tonight.
We start with the undisputed greatest of all time.
Magnus Carlsen defended his chess title at the twenty twenty-six Esports World Cup, sweeping his opponent four games to zero.
Pete Crow-Armstrong made history in the Cubs walk-off win over the White Sox. Chicago wins seven to six.
Arsenal beat West Ham two to one. Bukayo Saka scored the winner in the eighty-third minute.
Eighty-three minutes of work and then somebody earns it.
The next KRAK 11 News is at the top of the hour. Thank you for watching tonight.
Goodnight, Wexler County.
