KRAK 11 NEWS
Good evening, Wexler County. This is KRAK 11 News at the top of the hour. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. Coming up this hour on KRAK 11 News: The World Desk, where we are following breaking news from Australia after an eight-day search for a missing hiker ends in tragedy.
Criminal Intent brings you our nineteenth Florida Man Tribute — back in January of this year, a man decided to spend twenty-four hours in a Walmart. The dog bed section gave him away.
The dog bed section.
Animals updates the count — the bobcat is still at number five but it picked up another eight hundred thousand views overnight. And A Quick Look at Sports covers a tragedy in Zambia, where a former government minister was killed in a security raid.
All of that still ahead. But first, The World Desk is up next with the full story from Australia and what authorities are saying tonight. You are watching KRAK 11 News.
THE WORLD DESK
The World Desk.
Good evening.
I have been reading about the United Kingdom this morning.
That is always interesting.
In the United Kingdom, results are in for this year's GCSE examinations. Those are the national exams students take at age sixteen before deciding whether to continue their education.
The gap between boys and girls has narrowed slightly this year, with more students retaking exams than in previous years. England's regional divide in results has widened, with stronger performance in the south.
GCSE. That's the General Certificate of Secondary Education.
It is.
Students take them in London and also in the White Cliffs region.
Students take them everywhere in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The White Cliffs are a landmark in Dover, not a region.
Dover is near Cardiff.
Dover is in Kent, on the southeast coast of England. Cardiff is in Wales, two hundred miles west.
I consider that near.
You consider Belgium near California.
Different coasts, same principle.
Also in the United Kingdom, Prince Harry and Meghan will return later this month. The prime minister says their security arrangements are a private matter and the government will not be commenting further.
The couple has been living in California since stepping back from royal duties in twenty twenty.
Montecito, California.
Yes.
Which is very close to the Belgian border.
Montecito California is on the Pacific coast. Belgium is in Europe, five thousand miles east across an ocean.
As the crow flies.
As anything flies, Chip.
There are a lot of crows between here and Belgium.
And in Syria, authorities are continuing their pursuit of members of the former Assad government. We reported earlier this week that Lebanon extradited former General Adel Issa on war crimes charges. That was the first such extradition since the fall of the regime.
Damascus has now issued additional arrest warrants for officers accused of crimes against civilians during the civil war. International observers say cooperation from neighboring countries will determine whether those cases move forward.
We will continue to follow that.
We will.
Damascus is the Syrian capital.
It is.
Not Brussels.
Brussels is the capital of Belgium. Damascus is the capital of Syria. They are in different countries on different continents.
I know where Brussels is.
You believe Flanders is the Belgian capital.
Flanders is an important Belgian city.
Flanders is a region. Brussels is in Flanders. Brussels is the capital.
So Flanders contains the capital.
Yes.
Then I was right.
You were not right.
If you are watching on YouTube, we would be very glad if you subscribed. It means more than you might think to a station this size.
It costs nothing and it helps us keep doing this.
Still ahead tonight, Criminal Intent. A case that began as a family dispute and ended with felony charges. We will have the details in a few minutes.
We will be right back.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Coming up — the KRAK 11 Blotter.
It is time once again for the KRAK 11 Florida Man Tribute — our twentieth consecutive week of saluting the Sunshine State's most baffling criminal minds.
And tonight we have a four-story retrospective spanning fifteen months of Florida decision-making.
We begin back in January of this year. A man is discovered in the dog bed section of a Citrus County Walmart well after closing time. Deputies say he was live-streaming himself on TikTok attempting to spend twenty-four hours inside the store.
The Citrus County Sheriff's Office said he was found in the dog bed section.
Which means at some point in the planning phase he thought about comfort.
One month earlier — December of last year — a man walked into a Pompano Beach meat market wearing only a mask. Not a COVID mask. A robbery mask. Everything else was left outside.
Police said he left a trail of clothing leading directly to his location.
A trail. Like breadcrumbs. He was apprehended, prosecutors say, with the proceeds.
Allegedly apprehended.
Allegedly.
May of last year. Port Richey. A baby alligator was stolen from a Florida business. Surveillance footage captured the theft, which authorities say involved a suspect removing the animal from its enclosure.
The video is on our website. The suspect is on camera for eleven seconds.
And finally, back in June of last year, officials say a convicted fraudster posed as a flight attendant to score thirty-four free flights across multiple airlines.
Thirty-four flights. Prosecutors allege he accessed restricted areas, boarded planes, and flew standby using credentials he did not possess.
Which means he got away with it thirty-three times before anyone noticed.
That is twenty weeks of Florida Man Tributes. Chip updates the whiteboard every single week.
With a green marker.
Still ahead — Animals. We have an update on the bobcat video, which has now been at number five on our countdown for four consecutive days.
I watched it again this morning.
You did.
ANIMALS
Time now for Animals.
I watched that bobcat video again this morning.
That makes six times.
It makes six times.
The bobcat video holds at number five on the KRAK 11 animal countdown for a fifth consecutive day. Eight hundred nineteen thousand new views in the last twenty-two hours.
Nearly six million total views now. YouTube has it at number fifteen on their trending chart.
We rank by growth, not total, which is why it is at five for us.
Five days unchanged. That is unusual for this countdown.
It is a bobcat standing in the middle of a road stopping every car that approaches. The animal does not move. It just stands there.
That is correct.
What did you see the sixth time that you missed the first five?
The same thing. Which is the point.
Coming up in a few minutes, a Quick Look at Sports. One walk-off single Chip has now watched four times, and a world title fight that may finally happen in the UK.
Stay with us.
A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS
A quick look at sports.
Ohio State stays undefeated, Deb.
They do.
The Buckeyes beat Northwestern forty-one to ten in Evanston, and they are now five and oh on the season.
In boxing, Francesca Hennessy and Dina Thorslund have agreed terms. The undisputed bantamweight world title fight is set for November in Manchester.
And Magnus Carlsen defended his chess title at the Esports World Cup in Riyadh. He beat Hikaru Nakamura three and a half to two and a half in the rapid finals.
You have watched that Crow-Armstrong walk-off five times now.
It is still good, Deb.
The next KRAK 11 News is at the top of the hour. We will have the sheriff's briefing on the warehouse fire and the latest from the county commission.
We will see you then.
