Rundown
KRAK 11 NEWS
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. This is KRAK 11 News at the top of the hour.
Coming up this hour: The World Desk, where President Trump is promising tougher economic measures against Iran and any country that supports it.
Criminal Intent, where a midair incident on an American Airlines flight ended with one passenger biting another. Animals, where the number five video on the countdown has a new name. And A Quick Look At Sports.
That is a lot of sports.
It is never too much sports, Deb.
Still ahead on KRAK 11 News: The World Desk, where a sixty-day ceasefire has expired with no diplomatic or military solution in sight.
Stay with us.
THE WORLD DESK
The World Desk.
Good evening.
We have got the United Kingdom tonight, Canada, and Formula One. Deb knows where all of them are.
I do.
We begin in the United Kingdom, where the government has published advice for students who are unhappy with their GCSE exam results. The guidance was released ahead of results day later this week.
GCSEs are the exams students take at sixteen, which would put them in what, junior year?
Sophomore year. They are fifteen when they sit.
Right. The guidance covers appeals, re-marks, and what to do if you missed an exam due to illness or family circumstances.
Students can request their papers be reviewed by a senior examiner if they believe there was a marking error. The deadline for that is typically three weeks after results are released.
And the British government says there is no fee for students to request that review.
Also in the United Kingdom tonight, Travelodge has announced new security measures at all of its hotels following the resignation of chief executive Jo Boydell. The changes include additional overnight staffing and upgraded camera systems.
Boydell stepped down last week after criticism over how the chain handled safety complaints from guests. The company says the new measures will be in place by the end of the month.
Travelodge operates more than five hundred hotels across the UK and Ireland. The company has not said whether the security changes will affect room rates.
To Canada now, where the organisers of the Edmonton Marathon have issued a formal apology after discovering their course was measured incorrectly for the second year running.
The two thousand twenty-six course ran six hundred seventy-four meters too long. Last year's was short by nearly the same distance.
Six hundred seventy-four meters is just under half a mile, which at marathon pace would add three to four minutes to a runner's finish time.
The race director has offered refunds to all participants and says they are bringing in an independent firm to certify the course for next year.
Edmonton is in Alberta.
It is.
Which borders British Columbia to the west.
And Saskatchewan to the east.
Right.
In Formula One, four-time world champion Max Verstappen has extended his contract with Red Bull, keeping him with the team through the year twenty-thirty. The announcement ends months of speculation about a possible move to Mercedes or Ferrari.
Verstappen called Red Bull his racing family and said he has no interest in starting over somewhere else. He is twenty-nine years old and has won four consecutive world championships since twenty twenty-one.
The new deal makes him the highest-paid driver on the grid, though neither Red Bull nor Verstappen disclosed the financial terms.
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said keeping Verstappen was the team's top priority for the season, and that they built the extension around his input on car development through the next regulation changes.
Formula One now runs twenty-four races per season. Verstappen has won more than half of them in each of the last three years.
And that is the world from here.
Still ahead on KRAK 11 News tonight, Criminal Intent. A Wexler County grand jury has returned indictments in three separate cases, including charges against a man accused of stealing copper wiring from a Route 40 construction site.
Two hundred pounds of it.
That is a lot of copper.
It is.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Time now for the KRAK 11 Blotter.
Fourteenth week in a row. I updated the whiteboard this morning.
With a different colored marker.
Green felt festive. And we begin tonight back in June of this year, when an American Airlines flight descended into what police described as complete chaos after a passenger allegedly bit another traveler midair.
Police said the suspect also attempted to fight other passengers before the crew was able to restrain him.
At thirty-five thousand feet, there is nowhere to run. The suspect was taken into custody immediately upon landing.
The victim was treated by paramedics at the gate.
Also back in March, a German tourist filed a lawsuit against a New York taco restaurant claiming its green salsa was too spicy and caused him serious health problems. He is seeking one hundred thousand dollars in damages.
The lawsuit alleges the salsa at Los Tacos Number One caused lasting medical issues.
The restaurant has not commented publicly. The case is pending in New York civil court.
In July of this year, a helicopter made an emergency landing on a small island in the middle of Lake Jesup, which wildlife officials say is home to thousands of alligators.
A nearby airboat captain saw the emergency descent and reached the crew within minutes. He told reporters the water around the island was full of movement.
The crew was uninjured and the helicopter was later recovered by a salvage team.
The captain called it a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
He was very polite about it.
Fourteen tributes. Fourteen weeks. The whiteboard does not lie.
You were up there at five this morning with the green marker.
Preparation, Deb.
Still ahead tonight, we have got something very special coming up in our animal segment. It involves a helicopter, a pond, and a decision someone is going to regret.
We will be right back.
ANIMALS
Animals.
I have been looking forward to this all hour.
You have.
We have a turtle.
An endangered sea turtle completed a five-thousand-mile journey from Wales back to Texas, where she was originally tagged and released twelve years ago.
Researchers at Padre Island National Seashore confirmed the loggerhead turtle through satellite tracking. She survived the Atlantic crossing twice.
The turtle weighs two hundred and forty pounds and appears in good health. Scientists say the return migration is extremely rare for Atlantic loggerheads.
Twelve years.
She remembered.
Wildlife cameras in Scotland captured what researchers believe is the first recorded sighting of a Scottish wildcat swimming across a river.
The cameras were in the Cairngorms National Park. Conservationists say fewer than three hundred Scottish wildcats remain in the wild.
The species was declared functionally extinct in twenty sixteen, but a breeding program released fourteen wildcats back into the highlands last year.
And the number five video on the KRAK 11 animal countdown is called This Is the Only Animal That Terrified Steve Irwin. Six hundred sixty-nine thousand new views in the last seventeen hours.
It was the cassowary. A flightless bird native to Australia and New Guinea. Irwin called it the most dangerous bird in the world.
You have watched that video four times.
It has a claw that can disembowel a predator. Steve Irwin wrestled crocodiles for a living, and he was afraid of a bird.
Coming up next on KRAK 11 News, a quick look at sports. The race driver Max Verstappen just signed the richest contract in Formula One history, and he says he is staying put.
We will be right back.
A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS
Time now for a quick look at sports.
The scoreboard from last night.
It is a good one.
The Cubs walked it off last night against the White Sox in extra innings. Pete Crow-Armstrong hit a solo home run in the tenth to win it, four to three, and made history doing it — first Cub to hit a walk-off homer in his first crosstown matchup.
Ohio State is ranked number four in the Yahoo Sports preseason college football top twenty-five. The Buckeyes open their season Saturday against Akron with playoff expectations and a Michigan problem they are determined to solve this year.
In Formula One, Red Bull extended Max Verstappen's contract through twenty-thirty with input on car development through the next regulation changes. No financial terms disclosed, but he is now the highest-paid driver on the grid.
He called Red Bull his racing family.
Coming up at the top of the hour on KRAK 11 News — bond prices are dropping and investors are nervous. We will tell you what that means for your wallet and why you should be paying attention even if you have never bought a bond in your life.
That is next. We will see you in a few minutes.
