KRAK 11 NEWS
Good evening, Wexler County. It is the top of the hour and this is KRAK 11 News. I am Chip Marlowe.
And I am Deb Sarkissian. This hour: THE WORLD DESK, where prosecutors in Australia say a woman who killed three people with poisoned mushrooms should never be paroled.
CRIMINAL INTENT follows with our eleventh Florida Man Tribute of the year — two men, one Wawa, and ninety-six bananas. It happened back in April and we will tell you why it is trending again.
That is a lot of bananas.
Then ANIMALS, where the number five video on the KRAK 11 animal countdown has gained nearly six hundred thousand views in fifteen hours, and we will tell you what viewers are watching.
And A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS brings you the greatest opening-day debuts in Premier League history, including Alan Shearer's four-goal performance for Blackburn.
All of that this hour on KRAK 11 News. But first — THE WORLD DESK, where an appeal court in Australia heard arguments today about a sentence that allows for parole. We begin there, after this.
THE WORLD DESK
The World Desk.
We have four stories tonight from three continents.
And one of them involves a very large number.
Several large numbers, actually.
We start with the Evergrande collapse. The Chinese real estate giant's founder, Hui Ka Yan, has been sentenced to life in prison. We covered the asset seizure earlier this week.
The seizure of all personal assets is in addition to a sixty-two million dollar fine and now this life sentence. Prosecutors say the collapse shook China's entire property sector.
How large was Evergrande at its peak?
At its height it was the second-largest property developer in China. The company owed more than three hundred billion dollars when it collapsed in twenty twenty-one.
That is a staggering sum.
Four railway workers are dead in Japan after being struck by a train at Shin-Kanuma Station north of Tokyo. Authorities say the collision occurred during track maintenance work early this morning local time.
Have investigators said what caused the accident?
Not yet. Transport officials say an investigation is underway and that safety protocols during maintenance are being reviewed. No timeline has been announced.
In Australia, prosecutors are appealing the sentence given to Erin Patterson, the woman convicted in the mushroom poisoning deaths. They say the current sentence is manifestly inadequate.
Patterson was sentenced to twenty-nine years for what the trial judge called a truly dreadful crime. Prosecutors argue the sentence allows for the possibility of parole and say it should not.
This was the dinner party in Melbourne.
Melbourne is in the state of Victoria.
On the southern coast.
Southeastern coast. Three people died. Patterson's former husband's parents and his aunt. The appeal court has not set a date to hear the case.
In Formula One, Max Verstappen has extended his contract with Red Bull through the year twenty-thirty. The four-time world champion had been the subject of speculation about a possible move.
Verstappen is twenty-nine. This keeps him with the team for another five seasons. He has won four consecutive world championships with Red Bull since twenty twenty-one.
How many races does Formula One run in a season now?
Twenty-four. The schedule has expanded in recent years. The next race is in Monaco.
The Grand Prix circuit.
Yes.
I have driven through Monaco.
You have mentioned that.
It is a very narrow road.
It is. Before we go to the break, if you are watching on YouTube, do subscribe. It genuinely helps a station our size.
It costs you nothing and it means a great deal to us.
Still ahead tonight on KRAK 11 News, Criminal Intent. A man in Ohio has been arrested after police say he walked into a bank, demanded cash, and then waited in the lobby to be arrested.
He waited.
In the lobby.
Criminal Intent is next.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Time now for the KRAK 11 Blotter.
We have four stories tonight, and I believe you have arranged them in ascending order of dignity.
I have arranged them in descending order of bananas.
Back in April of this year, two men walked into a Wawa convenience store in Pennsylvania and made off with ninety-six bananas. Not ninety-five. Ninety-six.
Police said surveillance footage showed both suspects leaving the store without paying.
The total street value of the bananas was not disclosed.
Probably about sixty dollars.
Back in May, an Iowa man filed a federal lawsuit against Nintendo after he was denied Pokémon Professor certification despite scoring one hundred percent on the exam.
The suit alleges he completed all requirements for the certification program but was denied status without explanation.
A Pokémon Professor is not a paid position. It is a volunteer title for people who teach the trading card game at sanctioned events.
Nintendo has not yet responded to the complaint.
Back in July, a Missouri man led deputies on a chase that ended when he ran across a bridge and dove headfirst off of it into the water below.
Deputies said he survived the jump and was arrested after being pulled from the water.
Dashcam footage captured the entire sequence. The suspect is seen running at full speed, clearing the railing, and entering the water in what I can only describe as an Olympic-caliber dive.
He was charged with resisting arrest and failure to yield.
And back in June, Uber released its annual Lost and Found Index, and among the smartphones and wallets were three items that deserve special mention.
An ankle monitor, grillz, and human hair.
The company did not specify whether the ankle monitor was still active at the time it was recovered.
That is twelve Florida Man Tributes in twelve weeks.
Still ahead on KRAK 11 News — we count down the top five animal videos of the last twenty-four hours, and the number four spot has a new contender.
You are watching KRAK 11.
ANIMALS
Time now for Animals.
The good news desk.
I have been looking forward to this all hour.
You say that every time.
The KRAK 11 animal countdown tracks which videos gained the most views in the last fifteen hours, not which ones have the most views total.
At number five this hour, still number five, a video called When the Predator is Already Watching You. It gained five hundred ninety-nine thousand, six hundred seventy-nine views in the last fifteen hours.
Seven million, eight hundred eighty thousand, five hundred ninety-four total.
It was posted by a channel called Mind Fragments back in August. YouTube has it at number twenty-four on their own trending chart.
Unchanged since the last count.
It is.
That is a lot of people watching something.
I hope they are all right.
They watched a video, Chip.
I know.
Still ahead on KRAK 11 News, a quick look at sports. Pete Crow-Armstrong hit his first career walk-off home run last night to beat the White Sox four to three.
And Max Verstappen just extended his Red Bull contract all the way through twenty-thirty. We will have that when we come back.
Stay with us.
A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS
Time now for a quick look at sports.
Results only tonight.
Just the scores. Who played, who won.
Sara Bejlek upset Aryna Sabalenka at the Cincinnati Open, six-three, six-four. That is a major result.
Pete Crow-Armstrong hit another walk-off home run for the Cubs against the White Sox, four to three. That is two walk-off home runs in one week.
Two in seven days.
The Edmonton Marathon organisers confirmed their course was measured six hundred seventy-four meters too long. Every runner ran farther than the official marathon distance.
Coming up at the top of the hour — the station that was first with the story everyone else is now chasing. That is next on KRAK 11 News.
