KRAK 11 NEWS
Good evening, Wexler County. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. This is KRAK 11 News at the top of the hour.
Coming up this hour: the world desk, where Canada and the US say a trade deal could be done before the weekend. Criminal Intent with our sixth Florida Man Tribute. Animals, where coyotes and badgers are hunting together. And a quick look at sports, where the national debt has passed forty trillion dollars.
That last one is not sports.
It doubles in a decade, Deb. That is a statistic.
Still ahead: the world desk, where Prime Minister Carney says significant progress has been made and the deadline is Saturday.
That is next on KRAK 11 News.
THE WORLD DESK
THE WORLD DESK.
Good evening. This is my favourite hour of the broadcast.
Because you get to tell me where things are.
Because the world is very large and very interesting, and we get to cover it from Fairmont.
We begin tonight in Greenland, where scientists are documenting what they are calling feeding frenzies among giant whales in waters that were completely frozen year-round just two decades ago.
Researchers say the melting sea ice has opened up feeding grounds that simply did not exist when many of these whales were calves, and the animals are taking full advantage of the new access.
That is off the coast of Norway.
Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark. It sits between the Atlantic and Arctic oceans and it is the world's largest island.
The Scandinavian region.
The North American Arctic. Scientists say this is a direct result of climate change over the last twenty years, and they are calling the level of whale activity unprecedented.
In Liberia, the country's former vice president is now facing formal charges in a drug-trafficking and money-laundering investigation.
Jewel Howard-Taylor served as vice president from 2018 to 2022. She is the former wife of Charles Taylor, who was convicted of war crimes in 2012 and is serving a fifty-year sentence.
The charges include illegally facilitating, importing and selling drugs. Prosecutors say she also faces money-laundering charges tied to the alleged trafficking operation.
No trial date has been set. We will continue to follow this story as it develops.
An update now on the trade talks between the United States and Canada. Both countries say they expect to finalize a deal before the weekend deadline when new tariffs are scheduled to take effect.
Prime Minister Carney said Wednesday that negotiators are hammering out final details and that he is optimistic the agreement will be complete before Saturday.
The White House echoed that timeline, saying both sides have made what they called significant progress in the last forty-eight hours.
If no agreement is reached by midnight Saturday, tariffs on certain goods will increase by as much as fifteen percent. Both governments say they are working around the clock to avoid that outcome.
That is Canada.
It is.
I knew that one.
You did.
Tell us what you think in the comments. We read them.
We answer them as well.
Still ahead tonight on KRAK 11 News, CRIMINAL INTENT. A story out of Bartow that involves a former police officer, a Maltese poodle, and a charge that has the entire county talking.
We will have the latest on that investigation when we come back.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Time now for the KRAK 11 Blotter.
Seven weeks now.
It has become a tradition.
A tradition is something people ask for.
We begin tonight with an incident from April of last year. Flagler County deputies responded to a breaking-and-entering call at a residential property just after midnight. The suspect was allegedly attempting to force entry through the front door.
He was not wearing any clothing.
Deputies say he was armed with a knife at the time of the alleged attempted break-in.
Responding officers took the person of interest into custody without incident. He has been charged with attempted burglary and possession of a weapon during the commission of a felony.
The sheriff's office referred to him as the birthday suit bandit.
Back in July of last year, authorities arrested a man they are calling the Nail Bandit. Prosecutors allege he sabotaged fire rescue vehicles with sharp objects over a period of eighteen months.
Police say he repeatedly punctured tires and damaged equipment on emergency response vehicles during that time.
He faces multiple counts of criminal mischief. Bond was set at fifteen thousand dollars.
Back in June of last year, deputies in Deltona arrested a suspect on aggravated stalking charges. Police say he admitted to watching his former girlfriend sleep for several months.
Authorities say he was caught prowling the neighborhood overnight and that the victim had obtained a restraining order.
He remains in custody pending trial.
Back in May, the National Weather Service confirmed that a lightning strike killed four cows and a calf on a farm in Marion County during severe thunderstorms.
The farm owner reported the loss over that weekend. Weather service investigators confirmed the cause based on storm patterns and physical evidence at the scene.
That is seven weeks in a row.
It is.
Still ahead — a Scottish wildcat does something no one has ever filmed before. That is coming up in Animals.
You will want to see it.
ANIMALS
Time now for Animals, the Good News Desk.
The animal countdown moved overnight.
It did. Number five held its position but the numbers are remarkable.
Four hundred thirty-six thousand new views in twelve hours.
Number five on the KRAK 11 animal countdown this hour is a video about coyotes and badgers hunting together. Four hundred thirty-six thousand, seven hundred twenty-three new views in the last twelve hours.
That video has nine hundred eighty-seven thousand, three hundred total views. Posted by Zack D. Films on August nineteenth. It is unchanged from the last count at number five.
YouTube's own trending chart has it at number ten.
We rank by views gained, not total views. So our chart moves differently than theirs does.
Four hundred thirty-six thousand people in half a day wanted to know why a coyote and a badger would work together.
They hunt prairie dogs. The coyote chases on the surface, the badger digs underground. The prairie dog has nowhere to go.
That is a coordinated effort.
It is. And they have been observed doing it for years, but this video is the clearest footage yet.
Two animals that should be enemies, working together because it is smarter that way.
That is just wonderful.
Coming up in just a few minutes, A Quick Look at Sports. The Cubs walked it off last night on Pete Crow-Armstrong's first career walk-off hit, and we have the moment that won it.
That is next on KRAK 11 News.
A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS
A quick look at sports.
We have got the Cubs, we have got Formula One, and we have got chess.
That is a good night.
The Cubs beat the White Sox five to four last night on Pete Crow-Armstrong's first career walk-off hit. Seventeen-year veteran Jason Heyward drove in two, but it was the kid who won it in the ninth.
His first career walk-off and it came against the Sox.
In Formula One, Honda admitted it only realised the scale of its engine problems in January. They are behind schedule and the team knows it.
And Magnus Carlsen defended his title at the twenty twenty-six Esports World Cup in chess. Still the best player in the world.
That is your scoreboard. Coming up at the top of the hour, we are live with the next KRAK 11 News. More on the county, more on the state, and the stories you are watching tonight.
We will see you in a few minutes.
