Rundown
KRAK 11 NEWS
Good evening, I am Chip Marlowe. This is KRAK 11 News at the top of the hour, and we have a full lineup for you tonight.
I am Deb Sarkissian. We begin with The World Desk, where the President has threatened tremendous economic consequences for any country that helps Iran.
Then we bring you a Florida Man Tribute from back in July of last year, when a naked man hid in a tanning bed after trying to set a gym on fire at closing time.
Animals has number five on the KRAK 11 countdown, which gained two hundred ninety-one thousand views in ten hours and is up one spot to number five.
Does the title tell you what animal it is?
It does not.
And then A Quick Look At Sports, where SpaceX has finally brought Starship into port after twenty-four days at sea. Coming up in a few minutes on The World Desk, we will tell you where that ship has been and what happens next.
All of that ahead on KRAK 11 News.
THE WORLD DESK
The World Desk.
We have four stories tonight, and one of them involves whales in a place Chip believes is near Labrador.
It is near Labrador.
We will see.
We begin tonight with a story from Greenland, where scientists say melting sea ice has opened the waters to species that have not been seen there in significant numbers before.
Giant whales, including humpbacks and fin whales, are now feeding in waters that were previously covered by ice year-round. Researchers describe what they are calling feeding frenzies in the newly accessible Arctic regions.
Greenland is technically part of the Kingdom of Denmark, though it sits just off the coast of Labrador.
Greenland sits between the Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean. Labrador is across the Davis Strait, about two hundred miles to the west.
Either way, the whales are there now.
They are. The research team says the ice retreat from climate change has created new feeding grounds that were not available to these species even twenty years ago.
Trade news now. The United States and Canada say they are finalizing a trade deal ahead of the weekend tariff deadline, with Prime Minister Carney describing significant progress in the talks.
Negotiators from both countries have been working through the night to hammer out final details before tariffs take effect on Saturday morning. Prime Minister Carney told reporters this afternoon that the framework is in place.
This is Prime Minister Carney's second major international negotiation since taking office in Ottawa last November.
Prime Minister Carney took office in December, not November. This is his first trade negotiation as prime minister, though he led financial policy delegations during his time as governor of the Bank of Canada.
Either way, he has been on the job for months now.
He has. Both sides say they expect to have final language ready by Friday evening, though timing remains tight.
We will stay on that story as it develops.
We will. Now to Germany, where there is new information in a cold case we reported earlier this evening. An eighty-one-year-old man who confessed to the nineteen ninety-four murder of an American tourist has now provided investigators with additional details about how the crime was carried out.
Amy Lopez from Texas was last seen alive in September nineteen ninety-four during a visit to a fortress in Koblenz. Prosecutors say the suspect has now described the sequence of events leading to her death, which matches forensic evidence gathered at the time.
Koblenz is in the Rhine Valley, about ninety miles south of Frankfurt, which is the financial center of what used to be West Germany.
Koblenz is about seventy-five miles southeast of Cologne. Frankfurt is the financial center, but it was not divided by the East-West border. The border ran between the two German states, not through Frankfurt itself.
Thank you, Deb. Prosecutors say the new information will be used as they prepare formal charges, which are expected later this month.
The case had remained unsolved for three decades before the confession came last week. German authorities say additional witnesses have now come forward.
That is significant progress in a very old case.
It is.
Tell us what you think in the comments. We read them.
We answer them as well.
Coming up on KRAK 11 News, Criminal Intent. A man arrested three times in eight days, all for the same thing, and the sheriff says he is out of options.
We will have that story in a few minutes.
Stay with us.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Time now for the KRAK 11 Blotter.
Tonight we are bringing you our fourth Florida Man Tribute in as many weeks.
The Sunshine State continues to distinguish itself.
Four stories tonight, all from last year, and all of them remarkable.
We begin back in July of last year. Deputies in Lake County responded to a report of a disturbance at a fitness center at closing time. Deputies say a man ran through the facility without clothing, attempted to set fire to exercise equipment, and then concealed himself in a tanning bed.
Deputies say he was apprehended without further incident.
The tanning bed was, mercifully, not in use at the time.
Also in July of last year, a man allegedly attempted to steal fifteen hundred dollars worth of merchandise from a Lowe's Home Improvement store in Florida and fled the scene by clinging to the back of a moving UPS truck.
Deputies say he held on for several blocks. A citizen observed the pursuit and notified authorities, who tracked the suspect down after he dismounted the vehicle.
Prosecutors allege he attempted to flee.
On the back of a UPS truck.
Back in May of last year, a man in Okeechobee County was arrested after deputies say he shot his neighbor's pregnant cow multiple times after it wandered onto his property. According to the affidavit, he had previously threatened to shoot any animal that entered his land.
Deputies say he made good on that threat. He was charged with animal cruelty and criminal mischief.
The cow did not survive.
And in April of last year, a Florida man was arrested in Alabama in connection with cocaine trafficking. Deputies say they seized two kilograms during the traffic stop.
Authorities say he was taken into custody without incident and is awaiting extradition.
That concludes our fourth Florida Man Tribute. The record stands at four tributes in as many weeks.
The state of Florida has not issued a response.
Still ahead tonight, a story involving something very small, very determined, and very much not a raccoon.
Animals, in a few minutes on KRAK 11 News.
Stay with us.
ANIMALS
Time now for Animals.
You have been watching that countdown all afternoon.
I have responsibilities to this desk.
You have been refreshing the page.
We begin tonight with the KRAK 11 animal countdown, which tracks the videos gaining views fastest, not the ones that have the most overall.
Number five this hour has picked up nearly three hundred thousand new views in the last ten hours alone. Total views now stand at two point five million.
It is up one spot to number five since we last checked. YouTube's own trending chart has it at number two.
Check for Context has dropped out of the top five. It was number five. Now it is down to number six.
The video that is number five was posted by DiFlix back on the eighteenth of August.
It is filed under Pets and Animals.
It does not name an animal in the title.
I agree with you completely. A countdown should tell you what animal is in it.
Thank you.
You are welcome.
Still ahead tonight on KRAK 11 News, a quick look at sports. The Cowboys put up twenty-seven in Los Angeles, and we will tell you who caught two of those touchdowns.
That is next.
A QUICK LOOK AT SPORTS
A quick look at sports.
I have been watching the rankings all week.
You refreshed the page seventeen times yesterday.
The Cubs beat the White Sox in walk-off fashion, five to four. Pete Crow-Armstrong made history becoming the first player to record a walk-off hit in his first career start against the crosstown rival.
Ohio State opens preseason ranked number four in the Yahoo Sports college football top twenty-five. The Buckeyes are looking to beat Michigan and win the playoff this season.
Magnus Carlsen defended his chess title at the twenty twenty-six Esports World Cup. Many are calling him undoubtedly the greatest of all time.
Coming up at the top of the hour: SpaceX has finally salvaged Starship after twenty-four days adrift in the Indian Ocean. Engineers are on their way to find out what went wrong.
That is the next KRAK 11 News, at the top of the hour. We will see you then.
