KRAK 11 NEWS
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. This hour on KRAK 11 News: The World Desk, where Israel has opened bidding on a West Bank settlement that would cut the occupied territory in two.
Criminal Intent. An off-duty officer in Missouri rescues a child from inside a claw machine back in May of this year.
A claw machine.
Animals. A baby deer trapped on a freezing pond becomes the number one video on YouTube's pets and animals chart with over twelve million views. And Sports, where firefighters in Toledo are still battling an industrial blaze.
That is not sports.
It's an explosion at a recycling facility. There is smoke. There are flames. Still ahead on The World Desk: that settlement project and why the international community has condemned it for thirty years.
That's next.
THE WORLD DESK
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian.
Gordo, is the globe spinning.
The globe does not spin.
It spun Tuesday.
It has never spun. We begin tonight with a federal court decision affecting thousands of Ethiopians living in the United States.
A judge in Washington has cleared the way for the Trump administration to cancel Temporary Protected Status for Ethiopian nationals, opening the door to potential deportations.
The protected status was granted during ongoing civil conflict in Ethiopia's Tigray region. That conflict has displaced more than two million people since twenty twenty.
Ethiopia is in the horn of Africa, bordered by Kenya to the south and the Red Sea to the north.
Eritrea, Somalia, Djibouti, South Sudan, and Sudan. Kenya is to the south.
That's what I said. The Red Sea provides maritime access.
Ethiopia is landlocked.
The ruling affects approximately sixteen thousand people currently living under protected status in the U.S.
In the Indian Ocean, what began as a mystery six weeks ago has turned into a salvage operation off the coast of Christmas Island.
Residents say they've spotted a SpaceX rocket booster being towed just offshore. The booster launched from Boca Chica, Texas back in July and was presumed lost after crashing into open water.
Christmas Island is an Australian territory two hundred miles south of Jakarta.
Northwest of Perth.
South of Jakarta.
It can be both. Ocean currents carried the booster roughly four thousand miles from its last known position before a salvage crew located it Tuesday morning.
SpaceX has not commented on recovery plans or whether the booster will be returned to the United States for analysis.
And staying with space, the Pentagon's UFO reporting website crashed again this morning after receiving more than twelve thousand submissions in under three hours.
The site received three hundred forty million hits in its first twelve hours when it launched back in May of this year.
Three hundred forty million. That is more traffic than most government websites receive in a year.
The Defense Department says it is working to expand server capacity and expects the site to be operational again by Thursday.
Which is encouraging. People want to report what they see, and the government is listening.
Or the server is overwhelmed.
Both things can be true. Still ahead, an arrest in Wexler County, a vehicle pursuit that ended in a residential neighborhood, and a man who called nine-one-one seventeen times in four hours.
Criminal Intent is next.
That's next.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. Tonight, a child trapped in a claw machine, a lawsuit over Pokémon credentials, and ninety-six bananas that went missing in Pennsylvania.
The claw machine is designed to be impossible. That is the entire business model.
Back in May of this year, a Missouri bowling alley became the scene of an unusual rescue when a young girl climbed inside a claw machine and could not get out.
An off-duty St. Charles County police officer happened to be at the bowling alley at the time. He manually disassembled the machine, extracted the child, and reassembled the entire unit before leaving.
Police said he disassembled it.
The child was unharmed. The machine was returned to service.
Also in May, an Iowa man filed suit against Nintendo after the company denied him Pokémon Professor certification despite a perfect score on the examination.
The plaintiff alleges he completed all required coursework, passed the exam with one hundred percent accuracy, and was denied certification without explanation. He is seeking damages and formal recognition of his status.
Nintendo has not commented.
In Pennsylvania, back in April of this year, two men stole ninety-six bananas from a Wawa convenience store and fled the scene on foot.
Police said surveillance footage shows both suspects carrying multiple bags of bananas. Investigators confirmed the count at ninety-six.
That is eight dozen bananas. That is a decision somebody made and then carried out in full view of multiple security cameras.
Both suspects remain at large.
And back in July, a Missouri man led deputies on a chase that ended when he ran across a bridge and dove headfirst off of it into the water below.
Video from the scene shows the suspect running at full speed before diving. Deputies said he surfaced shortly after and was taken into custody.
The suspect was charged with resisting arrest and multiple traffic violations. He was not charged with diving without a permit.
There is no diving permit.
Still ahead, a baby deer video has twelve million views and we will tell you why people cannot stop watching it. That is next on KRAK 11 News.
ANIMALS
And now the good news desk.
You've been smiling at your monitor for six minutes.
People are watching animals do things. Millions of people. That is the entire internet right now and it is the best thing the internet has ever done.
A video of a baby deer trapped on a freezing pond is number one on YouTube's pets and animals chart in the United States tonight.
Twelve million six hundred thousand views. Posted by Sassy on August thirteenth.
Number two is titled, quote, how whales get rid from the barnicales. Two million two hundred thousand views. Posted by DiFlix on August eighteenth.
The title is misspelled.
Two million people did not mind.
Number three is titled, quote, she just had her first ever baby, it's another little boy. Nine million seven hundred thousand views. Posted by KittyCuddleTV on August tenth.
The title does not specify an animal.
It is on the pets and animals chart.
It is not clear it is about an animal.
Number four, when wildlife takes over your backyard. Six million six hundred thousand views. Posted by Farm Laugh Lab on August twelfth. Number five, her pet bunny is a kung fu master. Three million views. Posted by Girly Reacts on August fourteenth.
The bunny video dropped from number three yesterday.
A bunny that knows kung fu should hold a spot.
We have not watched it, Chip.
The title makes a claim.
The title is from someone named Girly Reacts.
That is someone's name.
It is.
These are the top five animal videos in the country tonight, and people are watching them because something about an animal in trouble, or an animal doing something we did not expect, gets past every defense we have.
Still ahead, sports.
We'll be right back.
SPORTS
And now, the KRAK 11 Scoreboard.
Gordo, is the globe spinning.
The globe has never spun.
It spun Tuesday. I watched it spin for six minutes before the broadcast and it read as authoritative. I would like it spinning now.
Magnus Carlsen has defended his chess title at the twenty twenty-six Esports World Cup in Riyadh.
Carlsen defeated India's Arjun Erigaisi three and a half to two and a half in the final, taking home five hundred thousand dollars in prize money.
Three and a half to two and a half.
That's the score.
Commentators are calling Carlsen, quote, undoubtedly the greatest of all time. That is not speculation, that is now the professional consensus among people who cover this sport for a living.
Ohio State is ranked fourth in Yahoo Sports' preseason college football top twenty-five.
The Buckeyes open their season September seventh against Akron. Kickoff is at three thirty eastern.
Ohio State, four. Akron, projected zero.
That is not the score.
It will be.
Honda's Formula One technical director has admitted the team only realised the full scale of its problems in January of this year.
The team is currently tenth in the constructors' championship with zero points through fourteen races.
January is when most people realise they have a problem, and Honda is right on schedule. Zero points.
And the Chicago Cubs defeated the Chicago White Sox four to three Monday night on a walk-off single by Pete Crow-Armstrong in the bottom of the ninth.
Crow-Armstrong drove in Michael Busch with two outs to give the Cubs their sixth straight win over their crosstown rivals.
Four to three. That is a broadcast highlight reel for the next forty years, and if the globe had been spinning behind us when we read that score, it would have elevated the entire moment.
FC Barcelona has completed the signing of midfielder Rodri from Manchester City for a reported sixty-five million pounds.
Rodri told reporters he is ready for, quote, excitement again, after four seasons at Manchester City.
Sixty-five million pounds.
That is not a score.
It is what they paid. That is a number. Numbers are scores, Deb.
And that is sports.
Still ahead on the next KRAK 11 News at the top of the hour, we will have more on that industrial fire in Toledo, where crews are still on scene nearly a week after the initial explosion.
Firefighters say the blaze is now contained but not extinguished.
We will have that update in a few minutes. For KRAK 11 News, I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. Thanks for watching.
Gordo, did it spin at all during the segment.
