Rundown
KRAK 11 NEWS
Good evening, Wexler County. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. It is the top of a new hour on KRAK 11 News.
This hour: The World Desk, as the United States condemns what it calls unnecessary escalation following Israeli airstrikes on a Syrian airbase.
Criminal Intent, where authorities release new details in the death of actress Hayden Panettiere. Happy Animals, as meaningful rain is finally forecast for drought-stricken regions. And Sports, where firefighters continue battling an industrial blaze six blocks from Fifth Third Field in Toledo.
That last one is not sports.
It is geographically adjacent to sports.
Still ahead on The World Desk: new questions about what Hayden Panettiere's final hours looked like, and why police say she wasn't alone. That's next.
THE WORLD DESK
Good evening. This is the World Desk.
Before we begin, I'd like to note that the World Desk graphic now holds for a full two seconds, which creates gravitas and signals to the viewer that they are about to receive international coverage of substance.
It held for one point eight seconds.
That is functionally two seconds.
We begin tonight in France, where more than two hundred women have come forward accusing a government employee of drugging them during what he described as medical research studies.
Christian Nègre, a civil servant with the French Ministry of Health, allegedly contacted women through online advertisements offering payment for participation in urological studies conducted at ministry facilities in Paris.
Accusers say Nègre administered substances without informed consent, causing involuntary urination. Two women who spoke to French media described feeling humiliated and powerless during what they believed were legitimate medical procedures.
French prosecutors have opened an investigation into multiple counts of administering harmful substances. Nègre has not been charged and could not be reached for comment by the BBC.
In Gaza, ten months after a ceasefire was declared, thousands of Palestinians remain unaccounted for as families search through rubble and contact hospitals across the territory.
The missing include civilians last seen in areas of heavy bombardment during the conflict in the southern corridor near Rafah, as well as individuals detained by Israeli forces whose whereabouts have not been disclosed by either government.
Rafah is in the southern Gaza Strip, not a corridor. The missing were last seen across the territory, including northern areas near Gaza City and Jabalia.
I'm describing the operational zone.
You're describing a place that doesn't exist.
Palestinian civil defense teams say the scale of destruction has made identification difficult in many cases. Bodies recovered from collapsed buildings often cannot be matched to missing persons reports without DNA analysis, which is not widely available in the territory.
The International Committee of the Red Cross has called for more transparency from all parties regarding detainees and casualties. Families continue to post photographs of missing relatives on social media in hopes someone has information.
In motorsport, nineteen-year-old Kimi Antonelli leads the Formula One drivers' championship in what has become one of the sport's most closely watched rookie campaigns in recent memory.
Antonelli was born in a garage in Brescia in northern Italy. His father told the BBC that Kimi was driving go-karts on his lap at age three, and that the family built their schedule around racing from the beginning.
He was discovered at age seven during a regional karting event in the Lombardy province, where scouts from several junior programs were evaluating young drivers who had shown early promise in the northern Italian circuit.
He wasn't discovered. His father was a mechanic who already worked in Formula Three. The family was already in racing.
I'm providing context for the international audience.
You're providing a story his father never told.
Antonelli won the European karting championship at fourteen and joined the Mercedes junior program two years later. He has won three of the season's first seven races and holds a twelve-point lead over two-time champion Max Verstappen heading into this weekend's race in Monaco.
The Monaco Grand Prix was two weeks ago. This weekend's race is in Montreal.
Montreal hosts the Canadian Grand Prix, which is the next race on the Formula One calendar and takes place this Sunday on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, a track Antonelli has never raced professionally.
That is correct.
Thank you.
Still ahead, a Fairmont man is facing charges after a traffic stop that began with expired tags and ended with a chase through three counties. That's Criminal Intent, in a few minutes.
That's next.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. Chip has been sitting forward for the last eleven minutes.
It reads as engaged.
It reads as a man who needs the restroom.
A police report from Greenville reveals new details in the death of actress Hayden Panettiere, who died Sunday at age thirty-six.
Authorities say Panettiere was not alone at the time of death. A bag of medication was found at the scene.
This is developing into exactly the kind of case where witness cooperation becomes critical. The timeline is still being established, persons of interest have not been ruled out, and that is standard procedure in a case of this magnitude.
Police say. No charges have been filed. There are no persons of interest.
There is a police report, which by definition means there are persons who were present, which makes them persons of investigative relevance.
That is not a phrase.
In Las Vegas, autopsy photos of Tupac Shakur were shown in court during a murder trial. Some family members left the courtroom before the images were displayed.
Shakur's cousin said the photos made him feel very angry, to say the least. The trial continues this week.
Liberia has agreed to accept twelve hundred deportees from the United States under a new arrangement announced today.
The deportees will include nationals from Africa, North America, South America and the Caribbean. The first batch of twenty is expected Thursday.
First batch. That language creates a visual of a process, doesn't it. You can picture the aircraft, the manifests, the coordination required across three continents.
Chip.
What.
We don't have footage of the aircraft.
I didn't say we had footage. I said you could picture it. That is a different editorial function.
Still ahead on KRAK Eleven, a story so heartwarming you will not believe it involves an animal that weighs less than two pounds.
And you'll want to see what happens when instinct, determination, and a very long walk all come together.
Happy Animals is next.
That's next.
HAPPY ANIMALS
And welcome back to the Good News Desk.
Deb, the graphic held for two full seconds that time.
One point nine.
That is rounding.
An endangered sea turtle has completed a five-thousand-mile journey from Wales back to her nesting grounds in Texas.
The loggerhead turtle was rescued from Welsh waters in January after cold stunning left her unable to swim, and marine biologists at Anglesey Sea Zoo nursed her back to health over seven months.
She was released off the coast of Galveston two weeks ago and has already traveled twelve hundred miles toward her original nesting site.
They know where she is because of a satellite tag, and they know where she's going because loggerheads return to the same beach where they were born.
That is remarkable.
In Scotland, researchers have recorded what they believe is the first-ever sighting of a Scottish wildcat swimming.
The wildcat was filmed crossing a river in the Cairngorms National Park, and wildlife biologists say this is the first documented evidence that the species will enter water voluntarily.
Fewer than three hundred Scottish wildcats remain in the wild, making them one of Britain's most endangered mammals.
And biographers of the late Steve Irwin say there was only one animal that genuinely terrified him.
The hippopotamus.
Irwin worked with crocodiles, venomous snakes, and sharks for three decades, but he told producers he would not film near hippos because they kill more people in Africa than any other large animal.
Still ahead, practice and qualifying from the Freedom 250 in Washington.
That's next.
SPORTS
Time now for the KRAK 11 Scoreboard.
The graphic just held for one point eight seconds.
Chip.
We have the Freedom Two-Fifty coming up this weekend, and I would like the commitment honored. All right. Four days out from Washington's first IndyCar race in four decades, and qualifying begins tomorrow at four-thirty Eastern.
The race itself is Saturday evening, forty laps on a one-point-seven-mile street circuit that runs through the capital.
Josef Newgarden still leads the series with three wins. Scott Dixon second, Alex Palou third. Newgarden's run has been the story of the season, and this weekend's layout favors precision drivers, which is what separates champions from contenders.
Dixon has won on street circuits before.
He has.
College football. The Cubs took a walk-off over the White Sox last night, four to three, and Pete Crow-Armstrong became the youngest Cub to hit for the cycle since nineteen-eighty-nine.
Twenty-two years old. Single, double, triple, home run. He went four for five at the plate.
The Cardinals are still two games above five hundred, third in the Central. That gap is closeable if the pitching holds, and I believe it will.
The Cardinals have lost four of their last six.
That is what closeable means.
Ohio State is now ranked fourth in the Yahoo Sports preseason college football poll. The Buckeyes open the season August thirtieth against Akron, and the coaching staff has made it clear this year is about one thing: beating Michigan and making the playoff.
They lost to Michigan last year.
Which is why this year is about beating Michigan.
And the year before that.
Deb, are you rooting against Ohio State.
I am reading their record against Michigan.
Formula One. Magnus Carlsen has defended his chess title at the Esports World Cup, defeating his opponent in the finals and taking home two hundred thousand dollars. Carlsen called it a return to competitive excitement after what he described as a relatively quiet year.
He is widely considered the greatest chess player of all time.
Undoubtedly the greatest.
And Honda has admitted it only realised the full scale of its Formula One engine problems in January, after spending the entire previous season testing. The team says the gap to competitors is larger than anticipated and will require fundamental redesign.
They had the whole season.
They did.
Just—genuinely, how does an engineering team not know for twelve months.
They tested the engine on a dyno. They didn't test it against the other teams' engines.
That feels like step one.
It does.
All right. Coming up at the top of the hour on the next KRAK 11 News: we will have the latest from the sheriff's briefing on the Route Twelve sinkhole, which has now been classified as a geological emergency.
The county is asking residents within two hundred feet of the site to prepare for possible evacuation. We will carry that briefing live, and we will have reaction from affected homeowners.
That is the next KRAK 11 News, at the top of the hour.
Thank you for watching.
Good night, Fairmont.
