KRAK 11 NEWS
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. This is KRAK 11 News, a new hour starts now. Here's what's ahead.
The World Desk: Three members of one family are dead after getting into difficulty off the Sussex coast. A fourth remains in critical condition tonight.
Criminal Intent: Florida Congressman Cory Mills fights to keep his House seat as allegations surface.
That's one way to describe domestic abuse charges.
Happy Animals: The rock world mourns ZZ Top drummer Frank Beard, dead at seventy-seven. And Sports: An industrial explosion sends firefighters racing to Toledo, Ohio.
That's Sports?
It's what's on the wire, Deb. Still ahead on KRAK 11: The World Desk investigates what went wrong in the water off Britain's southern coast, and why rescue crews couldn't reach them in time. That's next.
THE WORLD DESK
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. Tonight from overseas, an environmental activist in India remains in custody after challenging a luxury hotel development near a protected wildlife reserve.
This is near one of the country's most famous national parks, correct?
Kaziranga National Park in Assam state. The activist was detained last month after organizing local opposition to construction permits granted for resort development along the park boundary.
Assam is in the northeastern region, near the border with Bangladesh and Myanmar, where environmental protections have been a growing concern as development increases.
Assam borders Bhutan. Myanmar is five hundred miles southeast.
The broader region.
Authorities say the activist violated public assembly laws. Supporters say the charges are retaliation for blocking a project with political backing. No trial date has been set.
And staying overseas, the White House announced additional sanctions today on officials at the International Criminal Court, expanding measures first introduced three weeks ago.
The sanctions target the prosecutor and two senior deputies. The administration called the court quote, illegitimate, and said it would continue dismantling its authority.
The court is based in Brussels, which has been the center of European judicial coordination since the tribunal system was reorganized after the Second World War.
The court is in The Hague. The Netherlands.
Which is part of the broader Brussels framework.
It is not.
European Union member states have condemned the sanctions. Britain, France and Germany issued a joint statement calling them quote, an attack on the international rule of law.
The court has a hundred and twenty-four member countries. The United States is not one of them.
And new satellite tracking has revealed the USS Lincoln aircraft carrier has now been deployed for more than eight months with conditions on board deteriorating, according to reports from crew members and their families.
The carrier group left San Diego in January. Original deployment orders called for six months. The Navy extended that timeline twice, first in May and again in July, with no confirmed return date.
This is now one of the longest carrier deployments in recent history.
It is the longest since two thousand three. Letters from families describe equipment failures, medical supply shortages, and what one sailor called quote, dangerous fatigue among flight deck personnel.
The Navy has not commented on those specific claims but says operational readiness remains quote, within acceptable parameters.
The Lincoln is currently operating in the western Pacific. Five thousand two hundred sailors and air crew are aboard.
Deb, before we go to break, have we confirmed the kicker weight on these graphics? It looks heavier than what we ran Tuesday.
It is identical to Tuesday.
It reads heavier.
We're at time.
Still ahead tonight on KRAK Eleven News, Criminal Intent. A Philadelphia neighborhood is on edge after multiple sightings of a man in a horror movie mask approaching residents in the middle of the night.
Police say at least six people have been approached. No physical contact, but witnesses describe what one resident called quote, a twisted game.
That investigation, when we return.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. Chip has been workshopping a new sign-off for this segment.
It's called Crime Time with Chip, and before you say it, I know the alliteration is strong, which is the point. Strong branding creates viewer retention.
We're at the blotter.
A Wexler County man was arrested this morning after what deputies are calling the worst escape plan in recent memory. The suspect allegedly stole a riding lawn mower from a hardware store on Route Nine.
He then led officers on a pursuit that reached speeds of four miles per hour. Deputies followed on foot for eleven minutes before the suspect ran out of gas in the parking lot of the same hardware store.
Now, had there been helicopter coverage available, you would see the suspect making a large circle, essentially returning to the scene, which any investigator will tell you is the hallmark of a disorganised —
We don't have helicopter coverage.
Which is why I'm explaining what it would show if we did, Deb. The suspect is facing charges of theft and evading arrest.
In Florida, a congressional candidate is denying allegations of domestic abuse while campaigning for re-election. Republican Representative Cory Mills says the claims are politically motivated.
Mills is running in a competitive primary. No charges have been filed. Mills is the latest lawmaker facing allegations while seeking office.
Florida's primary is next Tuesday.
Closer to home, a Fairmont man was arrested Tuesday after deputies say he attempted to rob a convenience store using a toy gun that still had the price tag attached.
Police say the clerk recognized the weapon from the store's own toy aisle and called nine-one-one while the suspect was still at the register.
The suspect is a person of interest in at least one other case where an individual matching his description attempted to purchase lottery tickets with Monopoly money.
Prosecutors say he is the suspect.
Prosecutors allege. That's what I meant. And in Washington D.C., the first motor race in the nation's capital takes place this weekend when IndyCar arrives for the Freedom two-fifty Grand Prix.
Not a crime.
It's a blotter item, Deb. The blotter covers law enforcement and public safety, which includes traffic management for major events requiring street closures and coordinated police response.
Still ahead, an animal story you'll want to see. That's HAPPY ANIMALS, coming up in just a few minutes on KRAK eleven News.
We'll be right back.
HAPPY ANIMALS
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian.
Gordo, is the kicker running in the teal we discussed, or did it revert to last week's blue again.
We're on in forty seconds.
An endangered sea turtle has completed a five-thousand-mile journey from Wales back to Texas after seven months of rehabilitation, and was released this week near Galveston.
The turtle was found stranded on a Welsh beach in January of last year, suffering from hypothermia and severe malnutrition.
Rescuers nursed her back to health. They flew her home. And this week she went back into the Gulf where she — where she belongs, and that is —
That is exactly the kind of story we need more of.
It is.
Staying with animals that swim. Scottish wildcats have been documented swimming for the first time, in footage captured in Sutherland in the Scottish Highlands.
Wildcats are known to avoid water. Researchers say this is the first recorded sighting of the species swimming in the wild.
Fewer than three hundred Scottish wildcats remain in the wild, making this one of the rarest cats on earth.
And they swim now. Good for them.
Still ahead on KRAK 11 News: the Cubs and the White Sox met at Wrigley for the crosstown series, and the game went to the very last pitch. We'll have that next.
That's next.
SPORTS
Time now for the KRAK 11 Scoreboard.
Gordo, is the scoreboard graphic running in the weight we discussed or did it revert to last week's?
It's the same weight it was last week.
We discussed a heavier weight.
The English Premier League is back, and Manchester City striker Erling Haaland opened his campaign with a brace against Chelsea on Sunday.
He is now pursuing a fourth consecutive Golden Boot, which would tie the all-time Premier League record. The conversation around Haaland is whether he can maintain that elite fitness through a compressed fixture list.
He scored thirty-six goals in thirty-five appearances last season.
Which is elite output over a long campaign. His main challengers this season are expected to be Arsenal's Kai Havertz, Liverpool's Mohamed Salah, and Newcastle's Alexander Isak.
Havertz scored fourteen. Salah eighteen. Isak twenty-one. Haaland had thirty-six.
Closer than people think.
Baseball. The Chicago Cubs defeated the Chicago White Sox four to three in a walk-off finish at Wrigley Field on Sunday night in the crosstown series.
Pete Crow-Armstrong delivered the walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth with two outs and runners on the corners. At twenty-two years old, he becomes the youngest Cubs player to record a walk-off hit in the crosstown series since nineteen ninety-seven.
The White Sox have now lost fourteen consecutive games and sit at twenty-nine and ninety-one on the season.
That is historically poor baseball.
It's the worst record in baseball by sixteen games.
Formula One. Honda has admitted it only realised the full scale of its engine problems in January, two months after signing a deal to supply Aston Martin beginning in the twenty twenty-six season.
The Japanese manufacturer says initial testing revealed significant reliability and performance gaps that were not apparent during the contract phase. Aston Martin is currently locked into the partnership through twenty twenty-eight.
That is a complex situation for both parties, and the timeline suggests Honda will have approximately eighteen months to address those deficiencies before the engines go into competition.
They have eighteen months to fix an engine they didn't know was broken until after they sold it.
Chess. Magnus Carlsen successfully defended his title at the twenty twenty-six Esports World Cup in Riyadh, defeating India's Arjun Erigaisi in the final.
Carlsen has been the world's number one ranked chess player since two thousand eleven. He won the rapid and blitz formats and took home four hundred thousand dollars in prize money.
Fifteen years at the top of any competitive discipline is a demonstration of sustained excellence that very few athletes in any sport can match.
He's thirty-three.
Which means he has been the best in the world at this since he was eighteen.
That is correct.
College football. Yahoo Sports has released its preseason Top Twenty-Five, and Ohio State comes in at number four behind Georgia, Alabama, and Oregon.
The Buckeyes open their season against Akron on August thirtieth. They have added significant depth at defensive end and are expected to challenge for a playoff berth.
That has been the KRAK 11 Scoreboard. Deb, before we go —
We're at time.
Quickly. If someone were watching the sports desk cold, no context, no familiarity with the format, would they understand we are covering elite competition?
They would understand we are covering sports.
Elite sports.
The next KRAK 11 News is at the top of the hour. We'll have updates on the industrial explosion in Toledo, the shooting at Virginia State University, and weather that actually matters to people who live here. That's next.
