KRAK 11 NEWS
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. This is KRAK 11 News at the top of the hour.
Tonight on KRAK 11: The World Desk, where a family outing at a Sussex beach has ended in tragedy. Criminal Intent — a Florida congressman is fighting allegations days before voters decide his future. Happy Animals brings you a story about corporate legal strategy that has almost nothing to do with animals.
It has nothing to do with animals.
And in Sports, firefighters are still working an industrial blaze in Toledo after an explosion sent flames two hundred feet into the air. All of that this hour on KRAK 11 News.
Still ahead on The World Desk: three people are dead after a family entered the water off the Sussex coast, and a fourth remains in critical condition. That's next.
THE WORLD DESK
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian.
Gordo, is the lower third reading sharper or did we revert to the previous font weight?
We're on in four seconds.
It's a simple question about contrast.
Tonight from overseas, three members of a family are dead after swimming off the Sussex coast in southern England.
Sussex is the entry point for the Channel crossing, where thousands attempt the passage from France into Britain each year seeking asylum.
Sussex is on the southern coast. The Channel crossing is at Dover, thirty miles east.
Both coastal regions.
A man, a woman, and a teenage girl died yesterday after getting into difficulty in the water. A younger girl remains in critical condition at a hospital whose name authorities have not released.
The family's nationalities have not been confirmed, but investigators say they were visiting the area and entered the water during what locals described as unusually rough conditions for late summer.
Witnesses reported seeing the group struggling approximately fifty yards from shore. Emergency services arrived within minutes but were unable to revive three of the four.
Our thoughts are with that family tonight.
A federal judge originally appointed to oversee a ten billion dollar defamation case involving the president has been replaced. The new judge was nominated just last month by the same president whose case he will now hear.
The case stems from coverage aired during the campaign. The president is seeking damages for what his attorneys describe as demonstrably false reporting that affected public perception in key electoral regions.
The network denies the allegations and has filed motions to dismiss. No trial date has been set, and legal analysts say the reassignment could delay proceedings by several months while the new judge reviews case materials.
So this could take years.
It already has.
The administration announced new sanctions today targeting senior officials at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, which serves as the judicial hub for European enforcement—
The Hague is in the Netherlands. The ICC is headquartered there.
That's what I said.
The sanctions target prosecutors and investigators involved in cases the administration opposes. Officials have pledged to, quote, dismantle the court brick by brick, though it is unclear how financial restrictions on individual staff members would achieve that objective.
The ICC does not recognize U.S. jurisdiction and has stated it will continue operating regardless of external pressure. Several allied nations have condemned the sanctions as an attack on international rule of law.
And new reporting tonight on the USS Lincoln, which has now been deployed for more than seven months with no confirmed return date.
The carrier was originally scheduled to return in December. That date has been extended three times, and satellite imagery now shows the Lincoln operating in international waters far from its home port in San Diego.
Crew members have raised concerns about exhaustion and morale. The Navy has not provided a timeline for the ship's return, citing operational security.
It is one of the longest continuous carrier deployments in recent Navy history.
That is the World Desk. Still ahead on KRAK 11 News, a Wexler County man is facing multiple charges after what began as a routine traffic stop.
Criminal Intent is next.
We'll be right back.
Did the lower third read sharper.
Chip.
I'm asking a technical question about font rendering.
You're asking if anyone watching at home noticed a font weight.
If they didn't notice, it's not sharp enough.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian.
Gordo, is the kicker reading heavier again or did it revert to last week's weight.
We're at time.
Independence Missouri police have discovered fentanyl concealed inside five Barbie dolls sold at a discount retailer. Officers responding to a shoplifting report found the dolls had been modified to carry narcotics.
Police said the dolls were taped inside the packaging and sold at a store frequented by families.
Three people have been arrested. Charges include trafficking and child endangerment.
Prosecutors have not yet said how many dolls were sold before the discovery.
A Massachusetts man led police on what officers are describing as the slowest pursuit in county history after allegedly stealing a front-end loader from a construction site.
The vehicle has a top speed of eleven miles per hour.
Officers followed the suspect for forty minutes across two towns before he ran out of fuel and surrendered in a shopping center parking lot.
Police said traffic was not significantly affected.
A California burglary suspect was rescued after becoming trapped inside a wall for twelve hours. Officers on a coffee break heard cries for help coming from inside a commercial building.
The suspect had allegedly broken into the building overnight and became stuck between interior walls while trying to exit.
Firefighters removed sections of drywall to extract him. He was treated for dehydration and arrested at the scene.
In New York, a carjacking that ended in a crash led police to discover over six hundred pounds of marijuana inside the vehicle.
Two suspects have been charged with possession with intent to distribute. The victim has also been arrested.
Police said the victim knew what was in the car.
In Louisiana, a suspect fleeing from deputies through a swamp was attacked by an alligator. Body camera footage shows the man waist-deep in water when the animal struck.
Deputies pulled him from the water. He was treated for lacerations and charged with resisting arrest.
The alligator was not located.
Still ahead, what happens when a wildcat learns to swim.
That's next.
HAPPY ANIMALS
Welcome back to KRAK 11 News. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian.
Gordo, is the kicker running in the teal we discussed or did it revert to the blue from last week.
We have some very good news out of Texas tonight.
An endangered sea turtle has completed a five-thousand-mile journey from Wales back to Texas after seven months of rehabilitation.
The turtle was found severely injured off the coast of Wales last winter and nursed back to health by marine biologists before being released near Galveston.
Researchers say the turtle crossed the entire Atlantic to return to its feeding grounds. That is — that is remarkable.
It is.
In Scotland, wildlife photographers have documented what conservationists are calling the first recorded sighting of a Scottish wildcat swimming.
The sighting was reported in Sutherland in the Scottish Highlands. Conservationists say wildcats avoid water and the behavior has never been documented before.
Scottish wildcats are critically endangered. Fewer than three hundred remain in the wild.
And tonight we want to remember Frank Beard, the drummer for ZZ Top, who has died at the age of seventy-seven.
The band announced his passing Monday evening. Beard was the only member of ZZ Top who did not have a beard.
He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in two thousand four. The band has not announced funeral arrangements.
Still ahead tonight, we are minutes away from the start of the college football season, and one Big Ten team is sitting in the top five. SPORTS is next on KRAK 11 News.
SPORTS
Time now for the KRAK 11 Scoreboard.
Deb. Before we begin. The graphic kicker. Is it still reading heavier or did it revert to last week's weight.
It is the same weight it has been for three months.
It looks heavier.
The Premier League season is underway, and the race for the Golden Boot is already generating conversation across the footballing world.
Erling Haaland is pursuing his fourth consecutive top-scorer award, which would tie the all-time record. Mohamed Salah, Cole Palmer, and Alexander Isak are considered his primary challengers.
Haaland scored thirty-six goals last season. That is elite-level finishing in any era of the game.
Thirty-six goals in thirty-five appearances.
Which I said.
You said elite-level finishing.
In esports news, Magnus Carlsen has successfully defended his chess title at the two thousand twenty-six Esports World Cup in Riyadh.
Carlsen defeated India's Arjun Erigaisi in the final to claim the championship and has been described by competitors as undoubtedly the greatest of all time.
Chess has evolved significantly as a competitive platform. The speed chess format at this level requires calculation under extreme time pressure, and Carlsen has been dominant in that discipline for over a decade.
He has been world number one since two thousand eleven.
Fifteen years. That is sustained excellence at the highest level of cognitive sport.
Chip just called chess a cognitive sport.
It is classified as a sport by the International Olympic Committee, Deb, which makes it a sport.
In Formula One, Honda has admitted it only realised the full scale of its engine problems in January, months after committing to the twenty-twenty-six season.
The manufacturer had already signed to supply Aston Martin when it discovered critical delays in development. Honda says it is now working to meet the revised technical regulations ahead of the season.
Aston Martin finished fifth in the constructors' championship last season.
They will need a functioning engine to improve on that.
In baseball, the Chicago Cubs defeated the Chicago White Sox four to three in a walk-off finish at Wrigley Field on Sunday.
Pete Crow-Armstrong made history in the win, becoming the youngest Cubs player to record a walk-off hit in the crosstown series since the rivalry began in nineteen ninety-seven.
Crow-Armstrong is twenty-two years old.
Which makes it a record.
It makes it a record that has existed for twenty-nine years.
Still a record, Deb.
Coming up at the top of the hour on the next KRAK 11 News, a Fairmont couple is disputing ownership of a storage unit neither has opened in eight years.
The contents include a couch, a lawnmower, and approximately four hundred VHS tapes. Neither party can describe what is on the tapes.
We will have that story and the rest of the morning's news at the top of the hour.
I'm Deb Sarkissian.
And I'm Chip Marlowe. Thanks for watching KRAK 11 News.
