Rundown
KRAK 11 NEWS
Good evening, Wexler County. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. A salmonella outbreak in the United Kingdom has killed one person and sickened hundreds of others. Health officials believe imported eggs are the source.
Coming up this hour on KRAK 11 News: THE WORLD DESK brings you that outbreak and what British authorities are doing about it. CRIMINAL INTENT examines how police handled reports before a double murder. HAPPY ANIMALS has something that will make you smile. And SPORTS has the latest from the Premier League.
HAPPY ANIMALS is a snooker player on trial.
We'll get to that.
Still ahead: British Transport Police officers are under investigation over how they handled sexual assault reports before Simon Levy murdered two women. That's next on THE WORLD DESK.
Stay with us.
Chip, the funeral home needs you in the coffin before Thursday.
I am not demonstrating a coffin.
They say you have trustworthy corpse shoulders.
He does.
What the fuck are corpse shoulders.
Yours, but quiet.
They paid a shitload for half-lid.
Open casket only, I will not hide my manhood.
Put that on the headstone.
THE WORLD DESK
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian.
Deb, before we begin, I'd like to note that I have been pronouncing Wetherspoons correctly for the entire pre-show and I think that should carry forward into the hour.
You've been saying it for six minutes.
Correctly.
Tonight, a British pub chain has banned customers from playing music or videos through their phones in its establishments.
Wetherspoons operates over eight hundred pubs across the UK and Ireland, making it one of the largest hospitality chains in Europe.
The company says the decision follows complaints about other people's videos and what it calls amplified phone conversations.
This is part of a broader trend in European hospitality toward reclaiming what they call the traditional pub atmosphere.
It's part of wanting people to turn their volume down.
Well, yes, but in the context of centuries-old social customs that predate mobile technology entirely.
Wetherspoons opened in nineteen seventy-nine.
The first location. The tradition is older.
Moving on. The Garda Representative Association in Ireland says officers pursuing a vehicle were ordered to disengage after the suspect began driving on the wrong side of a motorway.
That command came after what authorities are describing as evasive action by the driver, which included crossing into oncoming traffic at high speed.
The pursuit ended in a crash. No officers were injured.
The Garda Representative Association released its statement this afternoon, confirming the timeline of the disengage order and clarifying that officers followed protocol throughout.
Authorities have not released the identity of the driver or confirmed whether charges have been filed.
In sports news tonight, Los Angeles Lakers governor Jeanie Buss is attempting to block her siblings from selling the family's remaining stake in the franchise.
The Buss family has controlled the Lakers since nineteen seventy-nine, when Jerry Buss purchased the team for sixty-seven and a half million dollars.
That franchise is now valued at over seven billion, making it one of the most valuable properties in professional basketball.
The team is valued at seven point one billion dollars.
Which is over seven billion.
Details of the legal action have not been made public, but the dispute centers on a proposed sale that would reduce the family's controlling interest in the organization.
And finally tonight, a man in South Gloucestershire says he has found what he calls the perfect bench.
Sam Wilmot runs an Instagram account called Rate This Bench, where he reviews public seating across the United Kingdom.
After four years and more than eight hundred reviews, he has awarded his first ten out of ten to a bench in a churchyard in South Gloucestershire.
He says it has a view, structural integrity, and what he describes as the right amount of moss.
There is a correct amount of moss.
Apparently.
The account has over forty thousand followers, many of whom have submitted their own bench ratings from locations as far away as New Zealand and Japan.
Still ahead on KRAK Eleven News, a Wexler County man is facing his fourth arrest this year, and the sheriff says this one involves a stolen vehicle, a storage unit, and what deputies are calling an extremely poor understanding of property law.
That's next.
I take seventeen vitamins now.
Why.
Optimal performance.
For what.
Broadcast. Stamina. Clarity.
You're reading a teleprompter.
At a very high level.
Your piss is neon. I know because the urinal in the mens room is a fucking mess.
That's how you know it's working.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. Before we begin, Chip has a request about the graphics.
Not a request. An observation. The kicker font size has been inconsistent across segments and I would like that standardized before we go to network samples.
We're not sending network samples.
In Indiana, a man has been charged with arson and battery after allegedly setting a garage on fire. Prosecutors say the garage contained severed genitals, which were also set on fire.
Police say the suspect had been drinking at a birthday party before the incident.
The suspect is in custody, bond has been set, and prosecutors are reviewing the case. He has not entered a plea.
In California, a man who fired multiple rounds at a sheriff's helicopter has been sentenced to nine years in prison. Prosecutors say he was intoxicated and believed the helicopter was surveilling him personally.
The helicopter was conducting routine patrol when the suspect opened fire from his backyard. A pilot would have seen muzzle flash, heard the impact against the fuselage, and immediately reported the position to ground units, which is exactly what happened.
The helicopter was not hit.
No injuries were reported. The suspect pleaded guilty in November.
Here in Wexler County, a man who set fire to his own vehicle with two passengers still inside has been sentenced to nine years in state prison.
Police say the incident occurred after a traffic stop last November. The suspect allegedly doused the interior with lighter fluid, ignited it, and walked away while two people were attempting to exit the back seat.
Both passengers escaped without serious injury. He pleaded guilty in December.
In the United Kingdom, two British Transport Police officers are under investigation over the handling of two sexual assault cases reported before Simon Levy murdered two women and raped a third.
Prosecutors allege those earlier assaults were reported to police, but no arrest was made at the time. The investigation is being conducted by the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
Levy was convicted last month and is serving multiple life sentences. Both officers remain on duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
Still ahead, something that will make you smile.
Happy Animals is next on KRAK 11 News.
The intern needs to go.
She's been here two days.
She corrected me.
She was right.
That's not the point.
You said Herrera wrong.
I said it my way.
Your way is wrong.
I've been saying it that way for six years. If it was wrong someone would have mentioned it.
we have all mentioned it, and you have been a dick every time. so don't worry. She will most likely never mention it again.
HAPPY ANIMALS
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian.
Before we begin, I would like the graphics team to note that the kicker font size on this segment is four points larger than it was on Criminal Intent, and I would like that standardized before the end of the hour.
We're opening Happy Animals on font size.
Consistency matters, Deb. Scientists have discovered something new about one of nature's most unusual animals, and it took an X-ray to see it.
Researchers studying the narwhal's spiral tusk have found it actually has two spirals, not one, twisting in opposite directions at the same time.
The tusk is actually an elongated tooth that can grow up to ten feet long. The second spiral was invisible to the naked eye until this study.
The findings were published this week in the Journal of Morphology.
Nature has been doing this for thousands of years and we are just now seeing it.
Scientists are also studying why certain animals appear to have a sense of humor. Researchers have documented playful behavior in more than sixty-five species.
Crows have been observed dropping sticks on other crows from above, then watching for a reaction. Dolphins chase fish they have no intention of eating.
Researchers say the behavior may strengthen social bonds within groups.
The quokka is still called the happiest animal in the world.
It is.
And the octopus keeps surprising us. Natural History Museum researchers have documented eight new examples of problem-solving behavior, including tool use and camouflage patterns that change faster than previously recorded.
The mimic octopus can impersonate more than fifteen other animals. Researchers say the list may now be longer.
Still ahead tonight, we will have sports. Something unusual happened in the Premier League this weekend, and it involves a goalkeeper who had not started a match in two years.
That's next.
Stop.
Stop what.
Whatever you're spraying.
It's called Broadcast. It's its a new cologne.
It smells like dick..
Something you are familiar with?
The booth smells like a taco bells bathroom.
I can taste it when I breathe.
That means it's working.
SPORTS
Sports.
Gordo, the panel is still up from World.
It's lowering.
The Premier League Golden Boot race is heating up as Erling Haaland enters his fourth season chasing a fourth consecutive top-scorer award, which would tie the all-time record.
Mohamed Salah, Cole Palmer, Alexander Isak and Ollie Watkins are all considered legitimate challengers this season, with Salah finishing second last year at eighteen goals.
Haaland scored thirty-six goals last season. Palmer scored twenty-two in his first season at Chelsea. That is what we call a gap in class.
Haaland also played four more matches than Palmer did.
Formula One. Alex Albon has signed a one-year contract extension with Williams, keeping him with the team through the twenty-twenty-seven season.
Albon joined Williams in twenty-twenty-two and has consistently delivered points finishes in an uncompetitive car.
That is a driver who understands commitment. One year at a time, proving yourself, building toward something larger.
Williams has not won a race in over a decade.
Baseball. Shohei Ohtani hit two home runs as the Dodgers defeated the Rockies eleven to five at Coors Field, with Blake Snell pitching seven strong innings in the win.
Ohtani is batting three-seventeen with twenty-nine home runs this season despite recovering from elbow surgery and not pitching.
The Lakers. A deep look tonight at the Buss family dynasty, from Jerry Buss purchasing the team in nineteen seventy-nine for sixty-seven and a half million dollars to today's valuation of seven point one billion.
The piece examines ongoing tensions between current owner Jeanie Buss and her siblings over control of the franchise.
Family business. You build something together, you navigate it together, and if you are very lucky, nobody writes an article about how you are doing it wrong.
The article is fifteen thousand words.
Well. That is sports.
Still ahead, the next KRAK Eleven News at the top of the hour.
We will have updates on the Wexler County sinkhole repairs, the sheriff's briefing on yesterday's three-alarm warehouse fire, and weather.
That is next.
Gordo, did the light hit?
What light.
The panel light. I asked for a panel light on the sports kickers so they read consistent with World Desk.
They were lit.
They were not lit the same.
Same as what.
Same as they were at six-thirty. World Desk had a warmer tone. Sports read cooler. If someone is sampling our graphics package they will think we do not have a standard.
We don't have a standard.
We have a standard. I wrote the standard. It is in the production manual under lighting consistency, page forty-seven, subsection C.
Nobody has ever read page forty-seven.
I have read page forty-seven.
You wrote page forty-seven, Chip. That is not the same as someone else reading it.
If the tone is inconsistent, the entire graphics package looks amateurish.
Sixty seconds.
Next hour. Warmer tone. Consistency across all kickers. Please.
Nobody watching at home can see the fucking difference, Chip.
Somebody sampling can.
