KRAK 11 NEWS
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. This is KRAK 11 News.
Tonight: a British couple killed on their honeymoon when their helicopter crashes on a Greek island. The details from that island when we open THE WORLD DESK.
An industrial explosion in Ohio forces firefighters to battle a blaze that is still burning tonight. CRIMINAL INTENT has that story and what investigators now say caused it.
HAPPY ANIMALS brings you the story of a raccoon named Jimothy who has become the internet's newest—
It's a raccoon, Chip.
And in SPORTS: the boxing world in mourning tonight after the death of Hayden Panettiere's former partner, heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko's brother. The family's statement when we get there.
But first tonight, THE WORLD DESK. A helicopter carrying newlyweds Alexander Cromie and Marie Ebert went down on a Greek island yesterday, killing both passengers and the pilot.
Greek authorities say the crash occurred shortly after takeoff. No cause has been determined. That story is still ahead on KRAK 11 News.
THE WORLD DESK is next.
Who approved this.
Approved what.
The photo. My photo. On the website.
It's fine.
It looks like I have a flashlight in my face.
You look the same.
The same as what? The same as the time I was chased by the police for getting drunk at the grand opening of the Wellington Zoo and letting the Howler Monkeys Convince me we were just going to the store to get some snacks.
That was an interesting evening.
Yes. and I still have to sit when I pee, So change the Headshot, This is personal.
THE WORLD DESK
Welcome back. Deb, before we go international, I want to acknowledge that the chair height issue from earlier has been resolved.
It hasn't been resolved. You're sitting on a phone book.
It's a Wexler County directory. And it has solved the problem, which is the definition of resolved.
A salmonella outbreak in the United Kingdom has now claimed one life, with health officials reporting hundreds of additional cases in recent weeks.
British health authorities believe the source is imported eggs, though no specific supplier has been identified publicly.
Most cases have been concentrated in England, which makes sense given that England processes the majority of UK food imports through its southern ports.
Most of the cases were in England because most of the people are in England.
That's also true.
The outbreak has affected at least six regions across England, with public health teams working to trace the distribution chain of the contaminated eggs.
Authorities are advising consumers to cook eggs thoroughly and to discard any eggs from suppliers that may be named in future advisories.
Also tonight, professional snooker player Graeme Dott has gone on trial in Scotland facing charges of lewd and libidinous behaviour involving two children.
Dott won the world championship in two thousand six, which was a significant moment for Scottish snooker given the sport's deep roots in Glasgow and Edinburgh.
Scotland has won the world snooker championship nine times.
The charges relate to alleged incidents in Glasgow and South Lanarkshire. Dott has entered a not guilty plea and the trial is expected to continue through the week.
And in Ireland, new details have emerged about a high-speed pursuit that ended in a crash on the wrong side of a motorway.
The Garda Representative Association, which represents Irish police officers, says pursuing officers were given a direct command to disengage after the suspect vehicle took evasive action.
The evasive action was driving on the wrong side of the motorway, which on an Irish road is particularly dangerous given the narrower lane configuration.
It's a motorway.
Irish motorways have narrower lanes than American interstates. That's a documented infrastructure difference.
The vehicle crashed shortly after the command was issued. No injuries have been reported, but the driver fled the scene on foot and remains at large.
The Garda Representative Association released the detail about the disengagement command in response to public questions about officer conduct during the pursuit.
Irish authorities are reviewing pursuit protocols, particularly in cases where suspects cross into oncoming traffic on divided highways.
And that brings us back to the infrastructure question, because Irish motorways were built in the eighties and nineties when lane width standards were different.
Motorways are wide roads. That is why they are called motorways and not narrow roads.
Comparative to American interstates.
We are not in America.
We are providing context for an American audience watching American television in Wexler County.
The motorway is in Ireland.
Still ahead, CRIMINAL INTENT. A Fairmont man has been arrested for the seventh time this year, and that number raises questions we'll address in a few minutes.
That's next.
That's the alarm.
I'm aware.
We should go.
Cronkite didn't go.
It's a real alarm.
They're all real, Gordo. That's what makes them alarms.
I can smell it.
So can I, and I'm still here. I will report the news. You sallies head on out of here.
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. Welcome back to KRAK 11 News.
Did you move the directory.
I did not move the directory.
Tonight — a California burglary suspect is lucky to be alive after police rescued him from inside a wall where he had been trapped for hours, crying for help.
Officers were on a coffee break when they heard muffled cries coming from a commercial building in Oakland. Police said the suspect had climbed into a ventilation shaft attempting to burglarize the property.
Firefighters used specialized equipment to extract him from between two concrete walls. The suspect has been charged with attempted burglary and is currently recovering at a local hospital under police supervision.
Police said he had been trapped for approximately six hours before officers heard him.
Also tonight — an Indiana man is facing arson charges after prosecutors allege he set fire to a garage and human remains following a domestic dispute.
The suspect was arrested without incident and has been charged with arson and abuse of a corpse. He is being held pending arraignment.
In California, a man who shot at a sheriff's office helicopter during a birthday party has been sentenced to nine years in state prison.
Prosecutors said the defendant fired multiple rounds at a sheriff's helicopter that was providing aerial support during a pursuit. The helicopter was not hit and no injuries were reported.
Had that helicopter been hit, the pilot would have seen — in those final moments — the exact trajectory of incoming fire, the rate of descent, and the precise moment of catastrophic failure.
The helicopter was not hit, Chip.
Correct. Because the pilot took evasive action.
And in New York, a man has been arrested after prosecutors allege he set fire to a vehicle with multiple occupants still inside following a traffic stop.
Police said all occupants escaped without serious injury. The suspect faces multiple charges including attempted murder and arson. He is being held without bail.
Prosecutors allege the attack was unprovoked.
Coming up in just a few minutes — a story involving an animal so joyful, so determined to brighten your evening, that we are legally required to show it to you.
That's Happy Animals, next on KRAK 11 News.
I need one of you to witness a wedding in the loading dock.
Whose wedding.
Couple from the mattress store. I got ordained at lunch.
You cannot marry people with sandwich breath.
The state doesn't ask.
Why the loading dock.
The groom's ankle monitor won't reach the courtyard.
I'll witness.
Fine. I am going to go hang around by the methadone clinic. The people outside always have great merchandise for sale.
HAPPY ANIMALS
And now, the good news.
You are still sitting on the directory.
It has resolved the chair height issue completely.
You have been sitting on a phone book for fifty-eight minutes.
A quokka. Native to Western Australia. Weighs between six and eleven pounds. Has been called the happiest animal in the world because it looks like it is smiling.
Rottnest Island, off the coast of Perth. The quokka population there is stable. Tourists are asked not to feed them. They approach humans naturally.
The smile is the shape of the mouth, not an expression.
They still look happy.
They do.
Octopuses. The Natural History Museum in London has compiled eight ways octopuses continue to surprise researchers. They can change color in milliseconds, solve puzzles, and remember individual human faces.
One species, the mimic octopus, can impersonate more than fifteen other animals including lionfish, sea snakes, and jellyfish. Scientists believe they use this to avoid predators.
Some animals may have evolved a sense of humor. Researchers at UCLA studied play behavior in mammals and found patterns consistent with what we recognize as teasing. Dogs, otters, and some primates appear to understand when they are being playful rather than aggressive.
Crows have been observed dropping sticks on other crows from above, then waiting nearby to watch the reaction. The study calls this intentional provocation for social bonding.
Jimothy the raccoon has become what the internet is calling a mega meme. Jimothy was photographed in a Toronto park eating discarded French fries while sitting upright. The photo has been shared more than four million times.
People are good.
Still ahead, SPORTS is next on KRAK 11 News.
Who microwaved socks in the break room.
I did. Heat resets the elastic.
What setting.
Popcorn.
The booth smells like a foot fucked a radiator.
Popcorn is too hot. Use baked potato.
Why the hell do you know that.
He did my gloves last winter.
The method is sound.
SPORTS
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. Chip has been sitting on the Wexler County directory for an hour and four minutes.
It's about posture, Deb. Network anchors sit forward. I've explained this.
You're sitting on a phone book.
A directory. And it's working. Tonight on the Scoreboard, the Premier League's race for goals is already shaping up to be historic.
Erling Haaland is chasing his fourth Golden Boot in as many seasons. That would tie the all-time record, and frankly, watching him operate at that level is what separates the game from everything else.
He scored thirty-six goals last season.
Which is why the conversation isn't whether he wins it, it's who's brave enough to challenge him. Mohamed Salah finished second last year with eighteen. That's a gap you don't close by accident.
Salah has won it three times. Cole Palmer finished with twenty-two goals in his first season at Chelsea and is considered a legitimate contender this year.
Palmer's twenty-two is impressive for a first campaign, but Haaland put up thirty-six while missing four matches. The efficiency is what separates the elite from the very good.
Alexander Isak at Newcastle and Ollie Watkins at Aston Villa are also listed as challengers. Isak scored twenty-one last season, Watkins nineteen.
Both excellent strikers. Both fifteen goals behind the man they're chasing.
Fifteen goals behind where he was. He hasn't scored this season yet.
It's August.
It is.
In college football, Ohio State is ranked fourth in Yahoo Sports' preseason Top Twenty-Five and the Buckeyes are being built specifically to do two things: beat Michigan and win playoff games.
Those are the same thing.
They are not the same thing, Deb. You can beat Michigan in the regular season and still lose in the playoff. Ohio State has done exactly that.
Ohio State lost to Michigan four years in a row before finally winning last season. The playoff losses came after losing to Michigan.
Which is why this year the focus is on doing both. New offensive coordinator, restructured defensive line, and a quarterback in Will Howard who transferred in specifically to run this system.
The analysis says the Buckeyes have the talent to win a national championship but have not yet proven they can execute in the biggest moments.
Which is a polite way of saying they've been close for five years and haven't closed. That's the pressure on this season.
In golf, Jordan Spieth was issued a warning after comments he made at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. Spieth told reporters he would be, quote, brutally honest about the state of his game.
A warning from whom?
The Tour.
For being honest.
For what he said about the course conditions and the scheduling conflicts between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. The warning was informal but came from tournament officials.
So they asked him a question, he answered it, and they told him not to do that again.
That's the shape of it.
Still ahead, the next KRAK Eleven News at the top of the hour. We'll have late developments out of the sheriff's office, an update on road closures in the northern part of the county, and a story involving a teenager, a ladder, and a very patient fire department.
That is next.
I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. Thank you for watching KRAK Eleven News.
Sixty-eight point four degrees.
What.
That's the temperature. I've been testing for three weeks.
Testing what.
My optimal broadcast temperature. Sixty-eight point four. Any higher, I sweat. Any lower, my voice tightens.
It's seventy-two in here.
I know. Someone keeps fucking with it.
That's the building default.
let me guess Deb is the building default?
