KRAK 11 NEWS
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. This is KRAK 11 News at the top of the hour.
Coming up this hour: On THE WORLD DESK, a Las Vegas murder trial witness describes the night Tupac Shakur was shot. CRIMINAL INTENT has the death of a man bitten by a dog during an altercation. HAPPY ANIMALS looks at farmworker safety. And SPORTS covers the Guardiola-Walker fallout.
Happy Animals is about pesticide exposure.
Still ahead on THE WORLD DESK: a witness says Tupac Shakur told police 'we'll take care of it' after being shot six times outside the MGM Grand.
That's next.
I've stopped drinking water.
You've what.
Yup. I only drink raw milk and eat liver.
Why the fuck would you do that.
Learned about it on a podcast. I'm going to be ripped.
You're going to pass away from dehydration.
I feel great.
You look green.
I'll send you a link to the podcast. You guys will love it.
THE WORLD DESK
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian.
Before we begin tonight, I'd like to note that the word Marlowe should carry more weight than the word next in my sign-off. It's a question of cadence and authority.
The word next tells the viewer what happens next.
Tonight from London, Earl Spencer has announced he will publish a book about his sister, Princess Diana, nearly thirty years after her death.
The book is titled Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, and it's set for release in the United Kingdom next month.
This will be available across the Commonwealth, which means readers throughout the former British territories will have access simultaneously.
The book will be released in the United Kingdom. The Commonwealth is fifty-six member states with separate publishing markets.
Right. The UK specifically.
Earl Spencer has written or co-written seven previous books, including a history of the Spencer family and a biography of his godmother.
This will be his first memoir focused entirely on Diana, who died in a car crash in Paris in nineteen ninety-seven at age thirty-six.
Also tonight, recovery efforts continue in Zimbabwe after a ferry capsized on Lake Kariba over the weekend. The death toll has now risen to ninety-three.
That makes this Zimbabwe's deadliest transport disaster on record. The ferry was carrying more than twice its legal capacity when it went down on Saturday night.
Rescue teams have been working in difficult conditions. The lake is the world's largest man-made reservoir by volume and visibility below the surface is extremely limited.
Lake Kariba sits on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, which means coordinating international search and recovery operations across the African interior.
The lake sits on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia.
Which is what I said.
Authorities have not yet released a final passenger manifest, and families are still waiting for confirmation of missing relatives.
And from England tonight, Joe Root is calling on his players to be good role models and good human beings as he begins his second term as captain of the England Test cricket side.
Root previously captained England from twenty seventeen to twenty twenty-two. He stepped down after a series loss to the West Indies but was reappointed last month.
Cricket's a character sport, Deb. Tradition, discipline, the weight of the Commonwealth watching every match.
England plays Pakistan in a three-Test series beginning May twenty-second.
Root says he wants his team to set an example both on the pitch and in how they conduct themselves off it, which is something you don't hear enough from captains at that level.
Root has captained England in a hundred and nine Test matches, more than any other captain in the team's history.
And a hundred and nine is a legacy.
It is.
Deb, before we go to break. If someone were watching this hour cold, no context at all, would the word Marlowe land with the authority it needs to land with.
We're at time.
Still ahead tonight on KRAK Eleven News, new developments in a Wexler County case that has taken investigators across state lines.
A suspect wanted in connection with a series of thefts is now in custody after a traffic stop Tuesday night, and what officers found in the vehicle has raised new questions.
That's Criminal Intent, next.
Sharks tend to bite if you try to swim with them.
Why would you try to swim with sharks.
That's the whole thing about sharks.
Ugh.
After the morning segment I'm going to try to swim with a shark.
You do that.
Shark. Shark. Shark. Shark!
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. Tonight: a dog attack on a British footpath turns fatal, and prosecutors say the owner knew exactly what he was doing.
We begin with a story that illustrates how quickly a sidewalk confrontation can escalate into something far more serious. A person of interest has been taken into custody.
A fifty-five-year-old man has been charged with manslaughter after another man was bitten by a dog and later died from his injuries. This happened on a footpath in the UK.
Police are describing this as an altercation that preceded the attack. The suspect allegedly had control of the animal at the time of the incident.
Prosecutors allege. The victim died from complications related to the bite. The dog has been seized by authorities.
Moving to Pennsylvania, where more than a dozen current and former Penn State students are facing serious charges tonight in what authorities are calling a major cocaine trafficking operation.
Seventeen people have been charged, including one parent of a student. Prosecutors say two off-campus fraternities appeared to be the hubs for the distribution network.
Authorities executed search warrants at multiple locations and seized what they are describing as significant quantities of narcotics and cash.
Police said. The investigation is ongoing and additional arrests are possible.
And in Germany, a trial has opened thirty-two years after the murder of an American woman. The suspect allegedly used false pretenses to lure the victim into a secluded location.
Amy Lopez was twenty-three years old when she was killed. Prosecutors say the defendant handcuffed her, sexually assaulted her, and then murdered her. The case went cold for three decades.
And finally tonight from the blotter, a convicted murderer in the UK has been found guilty of an almost identical killing just three years after his release from prison in Romania.
The defendant served time for a murder in Romania, moved to the United Kingdom, and prosecutors say carried out a second killing using the same method.
Which raises the question: what oversight exists when a convicted murderer crosses an international border and establishes residency in a second jurisdiction?
Different countries have different extradition treaties and different monitoring systems. Romania and the UK are both EU members.
Were. The UK left the European Union in twenty-twenty.
Still ahead: a story that will make you smile. HAPPY ANIMALS is next on KRAK 11 News.
I'm a finalist.
For what.
Regional Excellence in Servitude.
Who else is a finalist.
Numbers do not count.
That's exactly what numbers do. Numbers count.
Well anyway, I win and you lose.
Chip. Don't make me bitch slap you on air.
Valid point.
HAPPY ANIMALS
Welcome back to KRAK 11 News.
I have been sitting forward for forty-seven minutes.
I'm aware.
Network anchors maintain posture.
A wildlife sanctuary in Oregon has successfully released a bald eagle after eight months of rehabilitation following a collision with a logging truck near Portland.
The bird sustained significant damage to its left wing and required two separate surgeries to restore flight capability.
Eight months.
Sanctuary staff report the eagle gained full range of motion and was released Wednesday morning in the Cascade foothills.
A British textile cooperative reports wool prices have increased seventy-three percent in the last year as demand returns for natural fibers in manufacturing.
The increase has allowed hundreds of small farms in Wales and Scotland to remain operational after a decade of declining revenue.
British wool is now being used in products ranging from winter sweaters to biodegradable garden slug pellets.
A Connecticut family has adopted a senior beagle from a county shelter after the dog spent nine months waiting for placement.
The beagle is eleven years old and had been passed over by adopters seeking younger animals.
Shelter staff say the family drove three hours specifically to adopt a senior dog and selected the beagle within minutes of meeting her.
That's good people.
It is.
Still ahead on KRAK 11 News, a high school quarterback throws for six touchdowns in a season opener, and his coach says he has never seen anything like it in thirty years.
Sports is next.
I've been running to work.
Since when.
July.
Why have you been running.
My wife left me for a runner, so I'm running after her.
You're fat. Maybe just pick up a new wife. One you can catch.
I will get her back.
That's sweet. I'm sorry to hear about your wife. How long ago did she leave?
About nine years ago.
SPORTS
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
I'm Deb Sarkissian. Sports.
Gordo, is the chair still low.
The chair is not low.
It is two inches lower than it was at the top of the hour and I have been compensating for fifty-three minutes.
You have been sitting forward for fifty-three minutes.
ESPN has released its annual Future Power Rankings, evaluating all thirty-two NFL franchises on their projected success over the next three seasons based on roster composition, draft capital, and front office stability.
The Los Angeles Rams are ranked fifth. That places them ahead of every team in their division and positions them as the highest-rated franchise in the NFC West for the second consecutive year.
The Rams were also fifth last year.
Which demonstrates consistency.
It demonstrates they stayed fifth.
The Kansas City Chiefs retained the number one ranking for the fourth year running. San Francisco holds second. Baltimore third. Philadelphia fourth.
In basketball, reports from multiple league sources indicate the Buss family intends to sell its controlling interest in the Los Angeles Lakers, a franchise the family has owned since nineteen seventy-nine.
The sale would remove Jeanie Buss from her role as the team's governor and controlling owner. No buyer has been publicly identified. The Lakers are valued at approximately seven point one billion dollars.
Seven point one billion is the Forbes estimate from March. The actual sale price will depend on what someone is willing to pay for a team that has missed the playoffs three of the last five seasons.
That is one way to describe a franchise with seventeen championships.
It's the recent way.
The Lakers' most recent title came in twenty-twenty. Jeanie Buss assumed control of the franchise in twenty-thirteen following the death of her father, Jerry Buss, who purchased the team for sixty-seven and a half million dollars.
In mixed martial arts, Max Holloway has questioned why UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev has been photographed holding both the lightweight and welterweight championship belts when Makhachev has never competed at welterweight.
Holloway made the comments during a media appearance Tuesday. Makhachev responded Wednesday, stating he was told by UFC officials he could hold both belts for promotional purposes because he is scheduled to fight at welterweight in November.
So he is holding a belt for a division where he has not yet fought anyone.
He will fight in that division.
In November. It is August.
Promotional purposes, Deb.
Apparently.
Holloway is the former UFC featherweight champion and is currently ranked third in the lightweight division. Makhachev has held the lightweight title since twenty-twenty-two and has defended it four times.
In soccer, a new documentary series chronicling Pep Guardiola's final two seasons as Manchester City manager includes previously unreleased footage of a confrontation between Guardiola and former team captain Kyle Walker.
The documentary reveals Walker questioned Guardiola's tactical decisions during a training session in March of last year. Walker was removed from the starting lineup for the following three matches and later transferred to Bayern Munich.
Walker had been at Manchester City for seven years and captained the team for two of them.
Seven years.
Yes.
That is a long time to be at one club. In modern soccer.
And we have coverage of the Fairmont County Fair livestock auction, the Wexler County High School football preview, and a conversation with the new coach at Fairmont State, coming up on the next KRAK 11 News, at the top of the hour.
That is sports. I'm Chip Marlowe.
I'm Deb Sarkissian. Good night.
Should I open With a joke? Or inspirational Story?
For what?
The big Speech I am giving at the Rotary Club.
People like good jokes.
Okay. So. Inspirational Story it is.
Chip...
I will tell the story of when I risked my life to save a fellow citizen in need, How I never even knew who this person was before I helped, but if it were not for me, Linda would not be living the live she is today, because of my actions she is alive.
