KRAK 11 NEWS
Good evening, Wexler County. It's ten o'clock and this is KRAK 11 News. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. Coming up this hour on KRAK 11: The World Desk. Russia has issued another warning to Britain over drone support for Ukraine, its twenty-third this year.
Criminal Intent. Egyptian archaeologists have discovered how an ancient tomb was reused across centuries, raising questions about burial practices we thought we understood.
Happy Animals.
And Sports. British sprinter Amy Hunt has just won four gold medals at a single European Championship, a record nobody saw coming. That and more, all this hour, on KRAK 11 News.
Still ahead tonight on The World Desk: Russia's latest warning to the UK comes as Britain confirms it will supply long-range surveillance drones to Ukraine. The Kremlin says this crosses a line. We'll have details in a few minutes.
Stay with us.
Who gave you that.
The plant?
Yes.
A viewer.
Which viewer.
Does it matter?
I have been receiving some strange mail, and I am just protecting you.
Maybe you're just paranoid.
ya thats what they told me when I refused to become an alter buy. Look how that turned out.
THE WORLD DESK
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian.
Deb, before we start, I've been working on the sign-off for this segment. Something international. Something that communicates scope.
We're at the World Desk.
I'm aware. I mean a phrase. A closer. Network anchors have closers.
From Britain tonight, authorities have seized equipment in their first coordinated raids under a new law targeting criminal smuggling networks.
This follows increased crossings in the North Sea, where Tunisia has become a major point of departure for migrants heading to Italy and then overland through Europe.
Tunisia is in North Africa. The crossings Germany is targeting originate from Turkey and the Balkans.
Both are significant migration corridors.
German federal police confiscated inflatable boats, outboard motors, and life jackets during raids in three cities. The law took effect in October and makes it a federal crime to manufacture, transport, or sell equipment specifically intended for illegal border crossings.
The equipment was stored in a warehouse outside Hamburg, which is Germany's primary North Sea port and has historically been a shipping hub for the Baltic region.
Hamburg is on the Elbe River, seventy miles inland. The warehouse was in Dortmund.
Both are in the northern industrial belt.
Authorities say the operation is the first of several planned this quarter. No arrests have been announced.
A troubling story from northern Cyprus tonight, where fertility clinic staff are accused of misleading parents about sperm and egg donors used during in-vitro fertilization procedures.
Multiple families from the UK say children were conceived using donors that were not the ones they selected. The allegations involve at least three clinics operating in the Turkish-controlled portion of the island.
Northern Cyprus is not recognized by most international bodies, which complicates enforcement. Many UK couples travel there because the procedures cost significantly less and the donor selection process is more flexible than under British law.
Parents are now requesting genetic testing to confirm biological relationships. Several have retained legal counsel, though jurisdiction remains unclear.
No regulatory body currently oversees these clinics.
From Los Angeles, opening statements concluded today in the murder trial connected to the death of rapper Tupac Shakur nearly three decades ago.
Prosecutors say the defendant orchestrated the nineteen ninety-six shooting in Las Vegas, while defense attorneys argue the case relies on decades-old witness accounts that have changed over time.
The trial has been delayed multiple times since the defendant was arrested two years ago. Shakur was twenty-five when he was killed.
The case remained unsolved until twenty twenty-three, when new evidence led to the arrest. Testimony is expected to last six weeks.
Back here at home, a reminder: we updated our weather in the Kent water crisis story four hours ago. More than eight thousand residents remain without running water as infrastructure failures enter their fourth day.
South East Water has confirmed repair crews are still unable to provide a restoration timeline. The utility is distributing bottled water at six locations and has deployed additional tanker trucks overnight.
Schools in three districts remain on half-day schedules. Two hospitals continue operating under emergency protocols.
And the phrase I was thinking for the close was 'Around the world in eighty seconds.' Because it's brief but comprehensive.
We just ran four minutes.
It's aspirational.
Still ahead, a Wexler County man is facing federal charges after allegedly attempting to sell protected wildlife on social media. That story and more when KRAK 11 News continues.
CRIMINAL INTENT is next.
So.
So what.
Nothing. Just a day. Like any other day.
Okay.
Although some days are more significant than others.
Is today significant.
I didn't say that.
Happy birthday, Chip.
How did you know.
You do this every year. I hope you have a wonderful day..
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. Welcome back to KRAK 11 News.
Deb, I've been thinking about catchphrases. Network anchors have them. Sportscasters have them. We should have them.
You have had twelve.
I'm saying something that sticks. Something for the blotter. 'Justice is served' has a ring to it.
It sounds like a cafeteria.
We'll workshop it. Turning now to tonight's crime report, and this one crosses continents. German authorities have arrested four people accused of running a sophisticated smuggling operation out of a warehouse in Dortmund.
Police say the suspects were providing false documentation and transport equipment to migrants attempting to cross from Turkey and the Balkans into Western Europe.
This was Germany's first coordinated action under new legislation targeting smuggling infrastructure. Three cities hit simultaneously. Dortmund, Frankfurt, and one other we're confirming.
Berlin.
Thank you, Deb. Charges include human trafficking and forgery. No bond has been set.
Prosecutors allege.
Closer to home, archaeologists working in Egypt have uncovered evidence of what may be the world's oldest case of grave fraud. A tomb in Thebes shows burial practices shifting dramatically over centuries.
Researchers say the site was originally built for individuals buried in coffins, then repurposed generations later for mummy interments. Same tomb, different tenants, no one asked the first family.
The investigation continues. No statute of limitations on eternal rest, Deb.
There is no investigation, Chip. They've been dead four thousand years.
The research is ongoing.
That is not the same thing.
And coming up in just a few minutes, two very good dogs join Fairmont Regional's therapy program, and one of them has a name you will not believe. That's next on KRAK 11 News.
Stay with us.
I won three hundred bucks.
On what.
Scratch ticket.
You play the lottery.
Sometimes.
The lottery is a tax on people who can't do math.
I just won three hundred dollars.
And how much have you spent.
I don't track that.
Exactly. and another thing why the fuck do people buying lottery tickets always take so long at the counter, they take forever picking, they pay for the tickets in multiple payments, and then they scratch and get right back in line until they are broke, I do not get it. But Congratulations on your loss.
HAPPY ANIMALS
Welcome back to KRAK 11 News.
I have adjusted my posture.
You're sitting forward again.
It is the natural posture for good news. People lean toward joy, Deb. It is instinctive.
A rescue dog in Portland has learned to operate elevator buttons and now rides between floors to visit patients at a hospice facility.
Staff say the dog, a golden retriever named Biscuit, taught himself the skill after watching nurses for three months.
He now has unrestricted access to four floors and makes approximately twenty visits per day on his own schedule.
That is a dog with a job and he takes it seriously and I respect that more than I can—
The facility reports patient morale has improved significantly since Biscuit began his rounds.
A wildlife sanctuary in Northern California is caring for an orphaned bear cub found weighing just eleven pounds.
The cub, now named Cinder, has gained fourteen pounds in six weeks and is expected to be released back into the wild next spring.
Staff say she is eating solid food, climbing trees, and showing no interest in humans, which are all encouraging signs for eventual release.
In Arizona, a parrot who went missing for three weeks was found two miles from home, in a tree, loudly singing commercial jingles.
The bird's owner identified him by his rendition of a nineteen-nineties insurance commercial that aired only in the Phoenix market.
He remembered the jingle. For twenty-five years. That is brand loyalty you cannot buy, Deb.
Still ahead tonight, SPORTS, where we will tell you which team just moved into ESPN's top five and why their front office is celebrating tonight.
That is next.
We need one more.
For what.
Fantasy league.
I don't do fantasy football.
It's fun.
It's make-believe. I have a real life.
It's football.
It's pretend football. I deal in reality, Larry. I report actual events.
Calm down guys. Chip.. What are you doing this weekend?
Playing Dungeons and Gragons with some friends
You have got to be fucking kidding me.
What?
SPORTS
Coming up on KRAK 11 News: sports.
Good evening. We begin with track and field where British sprinter Amy Hunt has now won four gold medals at a single European Athletics Championships.
That is unprecedented. No athlete has ever won four golds at one European Championships before this week.
Hunt anchored Britain's four-by-one-hundred relay to gold this afternoon in Oslo, crossing in forty-one point six-two. That's her fourth medal after individual wins in the hundred meters, the two hundred, and the four-by-two relay.
The relay time was forty-one point six-two, which is three hundredths of a second off the British record.
Three hundredths is not the record.
It is close to the record, Deb.
In the National Football League, ESPN has released its Future Power Rankings for the upcoming season. The Los Angeles Rams are now ranked fifth overall, up three spots from last year's eighth-place finish.
The rankings consider three-year outlook, not current performance. Front office strength, coaching stability, roster depth. The Rams moved up because they've retained their core personnel and added quality depth in the draft.
The Kansas City Chiefs are ranked first. The Philadelphia Eagles second. The San Francisco Forty-Niners third.
Those are the teams that have been to the last four Super Bowls.
That's why they're ranked first, second, and third.
In basketball, sources tell ESPN the Buss family intends to sell the Los Angeles Lakers. The sale would end the family's ownership, which began in nineteen seventy-nine when Jerry Buss purchased the team for sixty-seven and a half million dollars.
Current valuation estimates put the Lakers at over six billion dollars. Jeanie Buss, who currently serves as the team's governor, would be removed from that role as part of the sale.
Sixty-seven and a half million in nineteen seventy-nine is worth approximately three hundred million today, adjusted for inflation. They are selling at twenty times that.
They're selling at the current market value, Chip.
Which is a very good return.
In soccer, a new documentary series covering Pep Guardiola's final two seasons at Manchester City has revealed details of his falling-out with former captain Kyle Walker.
Walker left City for A-C Milan in January, eighteen months before his contract was set to expire. The documentary shows the deterioration of that relationship over disagreements about playing time and tactical decisions.
Walker had been with City for seven seasons and won five Premier League titles.
Seven seasons, five titles, and nobody saw the documentary crew.
They saw the documentary crew, Chip. That's why there's a documentary.
That is the Scoreboard for this hour. Deb?
Still ahead on the next KRAK 11 News at the top of the hour: a Michigan community is in mourning tonight after five people and a suspected gunman were killed in a series of shootings. We'll have the latest from law enforcement when we return.
That's next.
Did the Scoreboard read.
It read as sports.
Meaning what.
Meaning you said the scores and they were correct.
That's the job.
Yes.
I'm workshopping something for the close. 'That's the final score.' Short. Clean. It works on multiple levels because we just delivered scores but also it's the last segment.
We've been saying 'that's the Scoreboard' for six years.
That's descriptive. This is a button.
Thirty seconds.
Try it next hour and see if anybody notices.
That's how catchphrases start, Deb. You say them until people expect them.
Or you say them until they fire you.
That's the final score.
Hand me the drops.
You just used them.
That was four minutes ago.
Your eyes are going to fall out.
My eyes can't not be blood shot during the show.
Lay off the weed.
Hey! It is Legal now and I have a prescription.
someone is in the lobby requesting an interview.
Eyedrops Deb..
