KRAK 11 NEWS
Good evening, Wexler County. This is KRAK 11 News at the top of the hour. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. This hour on KRAK 11: The World Desk has Russia warning Britain over drone supplies to Ukraine, and the Ministry of Defence responding. Schools are finding closed doors when they try to refer students to anti-terror programs.
Criminal Intent looks at what happens when the system says call us, and then nobody answers. Happy Animals brings you the results of a race that made history at the European level, and Sports has a quadruple gold performance that ended with a movie quote.
Amy Hunt ran on a track.
She ran it four times. In four different events. All gold.
Still ahead this hour, The World Desk asks what a warning from Moscow actually means when the drones are already in the air.
That's next.
There's a raccoon in your dressing room.
I know.
Animal control's on hold.
Tell them he's staff.
You have an arrangement with a raccoon.
He's there in the mornings. I don't make it weird.
What does he do in the afternoons.
He is at your mom's.
THE WORLD DESK
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian.
Before we begin, I want to acknowledge that the pronunciation guide I submitted has been formatted with the correct font weight and is now rendering properly on the prompter.
It's Arial Bold.
It's legible.
We begin with a developing story from London tonight. Russia has escalated its warnings to the United Kingdom over Britain's decision to supply unmanned aerial vehicles to Ukraine.
The UK Ministry of Defence responded this evening, saying Britain stands, quote, shoulder to shoulder, with Ukraine in what officials are calling a matter of collective security across the European alliance.
The drones are surveillance and reconnaissance platforms, not offensive weapons systems.
Deb.
Russia has called the supply a provocation. The Kremlin says further transfers will result in what it called serious consequences for bilateral relations.
Also tonight, Norway's King Harald has been admitted to hospital and placed on medical leave. The eighty-nine-year-old monarch is being treated for a rare blood condition.
King Harald is one of Europe's longest-serving monarchs. He acceded to the throne in nineteen ninety-one following the death of his father that January.
The Royal Palace says Crown Prince Haakon will assume duties while the king recovers. Norway has a constitutional framework that allows for seamless transitions during periods of royal incapacity.
Norway is a constitutional monarchy.
A seamless one.
No timeline has been given for the king's return.
And the BBC is reporting that schools in the UK are encountering closed doors when referring children to the government's Prevent anti-terror program.
Teachers say referrals meant to flag early signs of radicalization are now being rejected or delayed due to what the Home Office calls resource constraints.
The program was established in two thousand six to identify vulnerable individuals before they engage in extremist activity, operating through coordinated outreach between education and security sectors.
The program is run by local police and community groups, not by schools.
Coordinated outreach, Deb.
Teachers interviewed by the BBC say they have been told there is no capacity to accept new referrals in several regions. The National Education Union is calling for emergency funding to restore access.
The Home Office has not commented on the funding request.
Coming up, a Fairmont man was arrested twice in the same day for offenses committed an hour apart. That story is next.
CRIMINAL INTENT, still ahead on KRAK 11 News.
We need one more.
For what.
Fantasy league.
I don't do fantasy football.
It's fun.
It's make-believe. I have a real life.
It's football.
It's pretend football. I deal in reality, Larry. I report actual events.
Calm down guys. Chip.. What are you doing this weekend?
Playing Dungeons and Gragons with some friends
You have got to be fucking kidding me.
What?
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian.
Gordo, the plaque is visible in this shot, correct?
We're on air.
A Wexler County man is facing charges tonight after what prosecutors are calling the most elaborate excuse for missing jury duty in county history.
Police say the thirty-two-year-old defendant set his workplace out-of-office message to redirect all correspondence to a fake business trip in Toronto, then called the court clerk's office from what he claimed was a Canadian area code.
He was arrested at home four hours later after a neighbor reported seeing him mowing his lawn. The area code, investigators determined, was seven-one-six.
Buffalo. Not Toronto.
Geography was not his strong suit.
In Manchester, authorities have charged three individuals in connection with what prosecutors describe as a sophisticated prescription fraud operation targeting medications used to treat anxiety and sleep disorders.
Prosecutors allege the defendants created false patient profiles and obtained prescriptions across three states. All three have pleaded not guilty and are being held on fifty thousand dollars bail each.
Back here in Wexler County, a suspect is in custody following what police describe as an unusually well-documented crime.
Authorities say a man allegedly stole seventeen cartons of cigarettes from a convenience store on Route Four early Sunday morning, then accidentally left his résumé on the counter.
The document included his full legal name, current address, and references from two previous employers, one of whom told investigators the suspect had been, quote, very reliable.
He was applying for a position at the same store.
Police allege. He has not yet entered a plea.
Across the Atlantic, British officials are investigating after a cabinet minister's phone was allegedly compromised by someone posing as an incoming administration official.
The fraudulent contact reportedly exchanged several messages with the minister before the deception was discovered. British authorities have not identified a suspect and declined to comment on whether sensitive information was shared.
Coming up, animals that did not leave their résumés anywhere.
Happy Animals is next.
You're watching KRAK Eleven News.
Sixty-eight point four degrees.
What.
That's the temperature. I've been testing for three weeks.
Testing what.
My optimal broadcast temperature. Sixty-eight point four. Any higher, I sweat. Any lower, my voice tightens.
It's seventy-two in here.
I know. Someone keeps fucking with it.
That's the building default.
let me guess Deb is the building default?
HAPPY ANIMALS
Time now for the Good News Desk.
Deb, I would like to acknowledge that the panda graphic from Tuesday had the correct color temperature this time.
You sent Gordo screenshots with hex values.
I sent him the information he needed to do the job correctly, and he did the job correctly, and I am thanking him for it.
Punch the capuchin is continuing to make progress at the Fairmont Wildlife Rehabilitation Center.
Thursday he accepted a second piece of fruit from his handler and then returned to the handler's palm for more. That is the first time he has initiated contact twice in one session.
He held the mango for eleven seconds and ate most of it.
That is a very good monkey.
I mean, that is excellent progress by the rehabilitation staff.
Researchers in Sumatra have documented something remarkable. A wild orangutan applied medicinal plant paste to an open facial wound, and the wound healed without infection.
This is the first documented use of targeted plant-based medicine by a great ape in a natural habitat. The orangutan selected the plant, prepared it, and applied it directly to the injury.
Researchers observed the entire process and say it suggests a level of medical knowledge previously unknown in wild populations.
Closer to home, Maple the golden retriever begins official pediatric wing visits Friday at Fairmont Regional. She will be there twice a week, Tuesdays and Fridays, starting at nine in the morning.
Parents can request a visit through the nursing staff, and Maple is certified for patients ages three and up.
Still ahead tonight, we will have Sports. And if you thought ESPN's Future Power Rankings made sense, wait until you hear where they put the Rams.
That's next.
Do you believe in prayer.
What.
Prayer. Manifestation. The power of positive thinking.
What did you do.
I sent an email.
To who.
The station owner.
What did it say.
It was meant for you.
Oh god.
Ya, it was late, I was drunk, what can I say.
SPORTS
Time now for the KRAK 11 Scoreboard.
Gordo, is the scoreboard graphic still drifting when the template reloads.
We're on air.
It was drifting point-four inches to the left during the evening broadcast. I sent screenshots with the correct alignment values. That's a technical question, not a complaint.
We begin tonight with a follow-up to a story from earlier this hour. British sprinter Amy Hunt won four gold medals at the European Athletics Championships in Rome.
Hunt ran the hundred meters in ten point eight-seven seconds, a personal best, and after winning her fourth gold she quoted Gladiator. The Gladiator quote is what makes it a story.
She ran ten point eight-seven.
Which is why the quote landed. Anyone can run fast, Deb. Not everyone understands the theatrical moment.
In the NBA, the Buss family intends to sell a controlling interest in the Lakers. The sale would end forty-seven years of family ownership and remove Jeanie Buss as governor.
The family purchased the Lakers in nineteen seventy-nine for sixty-seven point five million dollars. Current valuation is seven point one billion.
That is a return on investment.
It is.
The NFL's Los Angeles Rams ranked fifth in ESPN's Future Power Rankings despite going seven and ten last season and trading away four first-round picks since twenty twenty.
ESPN's methodology weights front office, coaching, and quarterback play over win-loss record, so the ranking is forward-looking rather than retrospective.
The ranking is aspirational.
I said forward-looking.
You did.
In mixed martial arts, lightweight champion Islam Makhachev responded to criticism from Max Holloway over carrying two championship belts.
Makhachev holds titles in both the lightweight and welterweight divisions. Holloway questioned whether Makhachev should carry both belts when he has not defended the welterweight title in eleven months.
Makhachev said Holloway should win one belt before commenting on two.
That is a response.
It is.
In soccer, a new documentary about Pep Guardiola's final two seasons at Manchester City reveals a confrontation between Guardiola and former captain Kyle Walker.
The series documents Walker's departure from the club and shows Guardiola questioning Walker's commitment during a team meeting. Walker left Manchester City for AC Milan in January.
Walker left eighteen months ago.
The documentary aired this week. That makes it current.
It makes it a documentary.
Fair.
Coming up on the next KRAK 11 News at the top of the hour, we'll have reaction from the sheriff's office on the Route Four investigation, an update on King Harald's condition from Norway, and Larry has a question about Buicks.
Larry does not have a question about Buicks.
Larry called during the animal segment. He absolutely has a question about Buicks.
For KRAK 11 News, I'm Deb Sarkissian.
And I'm Chip Marlowe. We'll see you at the top of the hour.
I take seventeen vitamins now.
Why.
Optimal performance.
For what.
Broadcast. Stamina. Clarity.
You're reading a teleprompter.
At a very high level.
Your piss is neon. I know because the urinal in the mens room is a fucking mess.
That's how you know it's working.
