KRAK 11 NEWS
Good evening, Wexler County. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. This is KRAK 11 News, Fairmont's number one rated newscast, bringing you the stories that matter this hour.
Coming up this hour: The World Desk brings you the latest deadly strikes between Russia and Ukraine as tensions escalate across Eastern Europe.
Then, Criminal Intent — the president issues a direct threat to a nation most Americans couldn't find on a map.
Oman.
Plus, Happy Animals — because every hour needs something that doesn't end in an investigation. And Sports: a British runner asks if you're entertained after making European track history in Rome.
We begin with The World Desk, coming up in just a moment. That's next.
What is that smell.
It's called Executive.
It's called what.
Executive. It's what they wear in boardrooms.
It smells like a hookers hotel.
Exactly.
Chip, you smell like a divorced dad at a Marriott.
Or a Married Dad on a business trip to Vegas.
THE WORLD DESK
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian.
Gordo, the map is still defaulting to the Atlantic view. I adjusted that Monday.
We're at time.
Russia and Ukraine are reporting new casualties tonight after another deadly day of strikes across the conflict zone.
Moscow says nine people have been killed in Russian territory in the past twenty-four hours. Kyiv is reporting four deaths from overnight strikes on residential areas in the eastern provinces.
Both sides continue to target infrastructure along the Dnieper corridor, which runs through Ukraine's central agricultural belt where grain is stored before transport to Black Sea export terminals.
The Dnieper runs north to south through the entire country.
That's what I said.
You said central.
The agricultural belt is central.
In Indonesia tonight, aid workers are warning of critical shortages after Saturday's earthquake left fifty-three people dead and thousands displaced.
Food, water, and medical supplies are running low in the hardest-hit regions. Indonesia has requested international assistance as officials work to reach communities cut off by landslides in the mountainous interior.
Relief flights are being staged out of Jakarta, but weather conditions are complicating access to affected areas. The Indonesian Red Cross says it may be days before some villages can be reached.
Jakarta serves as the regional coordination hub for disaster response across the archipelago, which spans fourteen time zones and manages relief operations for over seventeen thousand islands.
Indonesia spans three time zones.
Across seventeen thousand islands.
In three time zones.
In the Middle East tonight, Jared Kushner met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem as part of ongoing efforts to secure support for a US-backed peace plan in Gaza.
Kushner, who serves as President Trump's special envoy to the region, held separate talks with Hamas representatives earlier this week before arriving in Israel. Details of the proposed plan have not been made public.
Netanyahu's office confirmed the meeting took place but declined to comment on the substance of the discussions. Kushner has a long working relationship with Netanyahu going back to the Abraham Accords, which normalized relations between Israel and several Gulf states including Oman.
Oman did not sign the Abraham Accords.
Oman participated in the regional framework.
The signatories were the UAE, Bahrain, Sudan, and Morocco.
Oman shares a strategic position on the Gulf, which connects to the Red Sea through the Suez Canal, making it central to Middle East trade routes and regional diplomacy.
The Gulf does not connect to the Red Sea through the Suez Canal.
It connects through a series of maritime corridors.
The Strait of Hormuz, the Gulf of Oman, the Arabian Sea, and then the Red Sea.
That's the corridor I was describing.
In Africa tonight, Zambian authorities have arrested several opposition leaders just days after the country's presidential election.
The government is alleging the opposition planned an insurrection. The leading opposition candidate is calling the charges, quote, total fabrications.
International observers are calling for the release of the detained leaders and an independent investigation into the allegations. Election monitoring falls under the jurisdiction of regional bodies including the African Union and the Southern African Development Community.
Coming up after the break, a Wexler County man is facing charges tonight after a domestic dispute that began over a lawnmower and ended with nine separate calls to dispatch.
That's Criminal Intent, in a few minutes.
Stay with us.
Should I open With a joke? Or inspirational Story?
For what?
The big Speech I am giving at the Rotary Club.
People like good jokes.
Okay. So. Inspirational Story it is.
Chip...
I will tell the story of when I risked my life to save a fellow citizen in need, How I never even knew who this person was before I helped, but if it were not for me, Linda would not be living the live she is today, because of my actions she is alive.
Stop.
what do you mean?
I know Linda, You gave her twenty dollars to cover her lunch, that is hardly saving her life..
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. Thank you for joining us for the blotter.
We begin tonight with a developing international incident involving the highest office in the land and a sovereign nation most Americans could not locate on a map.
President Trump told Fox News he would quote bomb Oman if it quote gets in the way over Iran.
The president also revealed the existence of a direct backchannel with Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which the Guard denies exists.
Oman is not party to the conflict the president described.
The administration has not clarified what getting in the way would entail, what the threshold for military action would be, or whether Congress was consulted.
The State Department referred questions to the White House. The White House has not responded.
A threat of military force against a Gulf state ally — Deb, are we leading the hour with this tomorrow?
We're at time.
Elsewhere on the blotter tonight, millions of phones across England and Wales received what the government is calling an entirely appropriate emergency alert.
The alert warned of severe wildfire conditions. There were no wildfires at the time of the alert.
The government says the alert was precautionary and based on meteorological data indicating elevated fire risk across southern regions.
Citizens complained the alert interrupted work calls, woke sleeping children, and caused at least one documented heart palpitation.
The government maintains that early warning systems save lives and that public inconvenience is, quote, part of the social contract.
No fires were reported Friday.
And still ahead on KRAK 11 News, we have something genuinely uplifting for you. Animals doing what animals do best.
Being animals.
That's next.
You need to go home.
I'm fine.
You are coughing all over the place.
I am fine, Just read the news and mind your own business.
Calm down... I was only trying to help.
I'm Sorry
No Problem.
Sixty seconds.
Gordo, get me a mask.
I'm not contagious.
I am doing the NEWS as if it were 2020, Masks on
HAPPY ANIMALS
We have some genuinely good stories to share with you now.
You moved the flowers.
I did not move the flowers. The flowers moved, or the camera moved, because they are no longer where they were Tuesday and that is a spatial fact.
A miniature therapy horse in Vermont has completed its certification to work in pediatric hospitals across New England.
The horse is twenty-eight inches tall, weighs sixty-three pounds, and has logged two hundred hours of training to work with children recovering from surgery.
Twenty-eight inches.
That is a— that is the exact right size for that job.
The hospital says children respond better to the horse than to traditional therapy dogs because the horse can stand beside a bed at eye level.
Eye level matters.
In Tennessee, a wildlife sanctuary has successfully reintroduced seventeen rehabilitated river otters into the Hiwassee River system after a decades-long absence from the region.
Biologists have confirmed all seventeen otters are hunting successfully and thirteen have established dens along a twelve-mile stretch of riverbank.
Otters were gone from that river for forty years, and now they are back, and they are thriving, and— I apologize, that just got to me for a second.
In Oregon, a golden retriever named Biscuit has been trained to detect invasive plant species in state parks and has identified over four hundred affected acres this summer alone.
Biscuit can detect knotweed root systems up to three feet underground, which allows park staff to remove plants before they spread.
A dog that saves forests by smelling what nobody else can see. That is the entire point of dogs.
And in Arizona, a family of roadrunners has nested on the roof of a fire station in Tucson for the third consecutive year, and firefighters have installed a camera so elementary school students can watch the chicks hatch in real time.
Three years in a row. They come back because it is safe.
Over six thousand students across southern Arizona are watching the nest this week.
Still ahead— we have highlights from Rome, Amy Hunt's historic night at the European Championships, and the Commonwealth Games produced a winner who never threw a punch. Sports is next.
I take seventeen vitamins now.
Why.
Optimal performance.
For what.
Broadcast. Stamina. Clarity.
You're reading a teleprompter.
At a very high level.
Your piss is neon. I know because the urinal in the mens room is a fucking mess.
That's how you know it's working.
SPORTS
Time now for the KRAK 11 Scoreboard.
Gordo, is the scoreboard graphic centered on the logo or on my initial.
It's centered on the screen.
We begin tonight with British track and field. Amy Hunt, who we covered earlier this hour, has now been named European Athletics Rising Star of the Year following her four gold medal performance in Rome.
The award was announced this morning by European Athletics in a ceremony Hunt attended via video link from London.
Hunt's hundred meter time of ten point nine one was the fastest by a British woman this year and the third fastest in European Championship history.
She is nineteen years old.
Tuvalu also made Olympic history this week, though under unusual circumstances. Tarona Taafaki won the nation's first Commonwealth Games medal without throwing a single punch.
His opponent withdrew before the bout due to injury. Taafaki received a walkover and was awarded bronze in the men's lightweight boxing division.
A medal is a medal.
It is literally the definition of a participation medal.
High school basketball in Wexler County. The Lady Pioneers defeated North Fairmont sixty-three to fifty-eight in overtime last night at home.
Senior guard Kylie Brennan scored twenty-two points including the game-winning free throws with four seconds remaining.
The Pioneers are now eight and two on the season and will host regionals beginning Friday.
Wexler County football. The Fairmont Cougars lost to visiting Jefferson thirty-five to fourteen Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars trailed by three touchdowns at halftime and were unable to establish any sustained offensive rhythm in the second half.
They are now two and six.
And a Maryland man has won one hundred thousand dollars by playing the same five lottery numbers twice on separate tickets in the same drawing.
The odds of that happening are one in three billion.
He bought both tickets at the same gas station within minutes of each other, same numbers, same draw.
Maryland Lottery officials say it was not a system error. He simply purchased the same ticket twice and both won.
That is preparation meeting opportunity.
That is buying the same thing twice by accident.
Still ahead on KRAK 11 News at the top of the hour — a Fairmont family is disputing custody of a dog they both claim to have raised, and neither has walked in eight months.
Also tonight, the county is replacing eight miles of sewer line beneath downtown Fairmont, and drivers should expect delays through December.
And we'll have an update on the school board meeting where three members walked out over the proposed mascot change.
That's the next KRAK 11 News, at the top of the hour. For Chip Marlowe, I'm Deb Sarkissian. Goodnight.
Goodnight, Wexler County.
Why does your mug say World's Best Dad.
It was on sale.
You don't have kids.
It's aspirational.
You're fifty-two.
Plenty of time.
For what, adopting a teenager?
No I am impregnating 27 women and will a full time Dad within the year.
what the fuck did you just say?
