KRAK 11 NEWS
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. This is KRAK 11 News at six. Coming up this hour: aid shortages and fears of starvation as Indonesia reels from a deadly earthquake that has left fifty-three dead and thousands displaced.
Then on Criminal Intent, a vodka empire built on internet fame is now in talks for a half-billion-dollar sale. We'll have the story behind the deal and the footballer who inadvertently launched a brand.
Happy Animals returns with a Pennsylvania fire station dog, an Oregon retriever who schedules his own shifts, and a Vermont pig whose paintings have raised three thousand dollars for charity.
The pig paints better than some people I know.
The pig has sold work.
And in Sports, Amy Hunt makes history with four gold medals at the European Championships including the first-ever mixed relay. That and Scottie Scheffler's four-stroke lead heading into Sunday are still ahead on The World Desk.
Stay with us.
Should I open With a joke? Or inspirational Story?
For what?
The big Speech I am giving at the Rotary Club.
People like good jokes.
Okay. So. Inspirational Story it is.
Chip...
I will tell the story of when I risked my life to save a fellow citizen in need, How I never even knew who this person was before I helped, but if it were not for me, Linda would not be living the live she is today, because of my actions she is alive.
Stop.
what do you mean?
I know Linda, You gave her twenty dollars to cover her lunch, that is hardly saving her life..
THE WORLD DESK
Welcome back to KRAK 11 News. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. Chip, you're sitting forward again.
I'm engaged with the material.
You look like you're about to pitch off the desk.
We turn now to developments in the Middle East, where Jared Kushner met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the second time in three days following separate discussions with Hamas representatives about the U.S.-backed Gaza peace framework.
The framework has not been published. Neither side has confirmed support for the plan.
But two meetings in three days tells you the White House believes there's an opening here. This is Gaza, this is Hamas, this is Netanyahu. You don't fly to the region twice in seventy-two hours unless something is genuinely on the table.
Kushner's office declined to provide details when asked by reporters this morning.
Which is standard for sensitive negotiations. You don't telegraph your position before the ink is dry.
There's no ink yet.
In Zambia, opposition leaders are calling allegations of insurrection, quote, total fabrications, after authorities arrested multiple opposition figures just days following the country's presidential election.
The leading opposition candidate was among those detained. Authorities have not produced evidence supporting the insurrection claim.
This is Zambia's southern region, near the border with Zimbabwe, where most of the economic activity is concentrated.
The arrests were in Lusaka. That's the capital. It's central.
Central to the southern trade corridor.
Central to the country. Zambia is landlocked and borders eight nations. The Democratic Republic of Congo is to the north. Zimbabwe is to the south. Lusaka is roughly in the middle of both.
Eight neighbors. That's a complicated region.
International observers have not yet issued a statement on the election. The African Union and the Southern African Development Community both had monitoring teams on the ground during the vote count.
We'll continue monitoring that story as it develops. In Russia, the death toll from Ukrainian strikes on Belgorod has now reached seven. A second child died overnight from injuries sustained in yesterday's attack on the border city.
Four others remain hospitalized. Belgorod is roughly forty kilometers from the Ukrainian border and has been struck repeatedly over the past eighteen months as fighting continues along the northern front.
Ukraine has not claimed responsibility for yesterday's strike.
Ukrainian officials rarely comment on operations inside Russian territory.
And in Indonesia, aid agencies are reporting that blocked roads continue to prevent food and medical supplies from reaching areas affected by Saturday's earthquake. Fifty-three people were confirmed dead and thousands remain displaced across the archipelago's eastern islands.
The quake struck the island of Sulawesi. Relief convoys are being rerouted through coastal access points after landslides destroyed two primary mountain roads.
Indonesia's northern border region has seen this kind of seismic activity before, particularly where the country meets Thailand and Malaysia.
Indonesia is an archipelago. It has no land borders.
Maritime borders.
It's seventeen thousand islands, Chip. The closest it comes to a land border is a line through the island of Borneo, which it shares with Malaysia and Brunei. Thailand is fifteen hundred kilometers away across open water.
Still the same general seismic zone.
It is not.
Coming up on KRAK 11 News, a Fairmont man is facing charges after allegedly returning stolen merchandise to the same store he robbed using the original receipt. How investigators say the plan fell apart in aisle six. That's next in Criminal Intent.
We'll be right back.
You need to go home.
I'm fine.
You are coughing all over the place.
I am fine, Just read the news and mind your own business.
Calm down... I was only trying to help.
I'm Sorry
No Problem.
Sixty seconds.
Gordo, get me a mask.
I'm not contagious.
I am doing the NEWS as if it were 2020, Masks on
CRIMINAL INTENT
Good evening. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian.
Gordo, can you confirm the crime graphic is centered. I am seeing a tilt.
It's the same graphic we've used for six years.
Six years is long enough to develop a tilt, Deb.
A British vodka company founded by a man who was kicked in the chest by a professional footballer is now worth half a billion pounds.
The incident occurred in two thousand thirteen during a match at Swansea. Chelsea's Eden Hazard kicked Charlie Morgan, then a seventeen-year-old ball boy, as Morgan lay on top of the ball to waste time.
Hazard was sent off. Morgan went on to co-found Au Vodka, which is now in talks to be acquired by BuzzBallz, a Texas-based spirits company.
The sale would value the company at five hundred million pounds. That is approximately six hundred thirty-five million U.S. dollars for being kicked once.
Per kick.
Allegedly kicked.
It was televised.
In other news, the creator of the British sitcom Mrs Brown's Boys has cancelled this year's Christmas specials after breaking his jaw. Brendan O'Carroll says he requires immediate surgery and hopes the show will return in two thousand twenty-seven.
O'Carroll did not say how the injury occurred. The show has aired Christmas specials every year since two thousand eleven.
That is fourteen consecutive years. The show is filmed before a live studio audience in Glasgow, which is in Scotland's central region where most cultural production is concentrated.
It's filmed in a warehouse.
A warehouse in the cultural region.
Glasgow is a city.
It is Scotland's largest city and has been a center of production since the eighteenth century.
We're at time.
Deb. If someone were watching this segment with no prior knowledge of British geography—
They would know Glasgow is a city.
Still ahead: an animal story you will want to see. That's next on KRAK eleven News.
I take seventeen vitamins now.
Why.
Optimal performance.
For what.
Broadcast. Stamina. Clarity.
You're reading a teleprompter.
At a very high level.
Your piss is neon. I know because the urinal in the mens room is a fucking mess.
That's how you know it's working.
HAPPY ANIMALS
Welcome back to KRAK 11 News. I'm Chip Marlowe.
And I'm Deb Sarkissian. Time now for Happy Animals.
Gordo, is the duck visible in the preview monitor? The rubber duck. On my left. I want it in frame when we do the dog story.
Why is there a rubber duck on the desk.
It's for context. Dogs like ducks. It's relatable.
A Connecticut horse named Winston has learned to open gate latches and has now freed himself and three other horses on six separate occasions.
The farm installed a secondary lock. Winston opened it in under two minutes.
That is a smart horse.
In New Hampshire, a beagle named Biscuit has been trained to detect invasive plants at state parks and has identified over forty infestations this summer.
Biscuit works three days a week and has helped remove over two thousand pounds of invasive species from protected land.
The park service says Biscuit is more effective than a four-person survey team.
A Pennsylvania cat named Professor has been visiting the same library every morning for three years and now has his own chair in the children's section.
The library reports reading participation in the children's program is up eighteen percent since Professor started attending.
That is the best thing a library can do.
That's what libraries are for. Just— that right there.
And finally tonight, a Wisconsin family has been reunited with their dog Copper after four years. Copper was found two states away and identified by his microchip.
The family says Copper remembered them immediately.
Four years.
That's the whole thing about dogs right there.
It is.
Still ahead tonight: a Fairmont high school baseball team is heading to regionals for the first time in twelve years, and the pitcher who got them there just turned sixteen. Sports is next.
Why does your mug say World's Best Dad.
It was on sale.
You don't have kids.
It's aspirational.
You're fifty-two.
Plenty of time.
For what, adopting a teenager?
No I am impregnating 27 women and will a full time Dad within the year.
what the fuck did you just say?
SPORTS
Time now for the KRAK 11 Scoreboard.
And before we get to the scores, I want to acknowledge that this graphic is now properly centered.
It's in the same position it's been in since two thousand nineteen.
Three days of work, Deb. Scottie Scheffler closed out the Tour Championship in Atlanta today, finishing at thirty under par to win by four strokes.
That's his seventh win of the season and his second FedEx Cup title.
Dominant performance. Collin Morikawa finished second at twenty-six under, Sahith Theegala third at twenty-four under.
In college football, Ohio State opened their season with a forty-nine to nothing shutout of Akron in Columbus.
Quarterback Will Howard threw for three touchdowns in his Buckeyes debut.
Notre Dame beat Texas A&M twenty-three to thirteen in College Station. Penn State took down West Virginia thirty-four to twelve.
And in a game that came down to the wire, USC edged LSU twenty-seven to twenty in Las Vegas.
Lincoln Riley improves to three and oh in season openers at USC.
Baseball. The Dodgers beat the Giants four to three in eleven innings at Dodger Stadium.
Mookie Betts drove in the winning run in the eleventh. Los Angeles used seven relievers.
Seven.
It was eleven innings.
The Yankees beat the Rays six to one in the Bronx. Aaron Judge hit his forty-fourth home run of the season.
The Astros shut out the Mariners two to nothing in Houston, and the Phillies topped the Nationals five to three in Philadelphia.
In tennis, top seed Iga Świątek advanced to the fourth round of the US Open with a straight-sets win over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
Six-three, six-four. She's dropped only twelve games through three rounds.
On the men's side, Carlos Alcaraz beat Daniel Evans in four sets to reach the round of sixteen.
And I want to make something clear about centering.
No.
When a graphic has been off-axis for six years, the human eye adjusts to compensate. What looks centered now looked wrong on Tuesday because the eye had formed a habit.
The graphic has not moved.
It moved Wednesday.
Gordo?
Gordo was not here Wednesday.
Gordo is always here Wednesday.
Well he wasn't here this Wednesday, which is why I was able to make the adjustment unsupervised.
Coming up at the top of the hour on the next KRAK 11 News, Wexler County commissioners will vote on a proposal that could reshape how emergency services are funded countywide.
That vote has been delayed twice already. We'll have live coverage beginning at ten.
Plus the story of a Fairmont man who says his neighbor's fence is six inches over the property line and has been for nine years.
Six inches.
Over nine years, that adds up.
That is not how property lines work.
The next KRAK 11 News, at the top of the hour. I'm Deb Sarkissian.
And I'm Chip Marlowe. Goodnight, Fairmont.
Who approved this.
Approved what.
The photo. My photo. On the website.
It's fine.
It looks like I have a flashlight in my face.
You look the same.
The same as what? The same as the time I was chased by the police for getting drunk at the grand opening of the Wellington Zoo and letting the Howler Monkeys Convince me we were just going to the store to get some snacks.
That was an interesting evening.
Yes. and I still have to sit when I pee, So change the Headshot, This is personal.
